On Page Three is Where Our Voyage Takes Us illustrating the many ways our activities impact the greater Milwaukee area, our members, and the boating community in which we sail. Next you’ll find The Wind In Our Sails features support and fundraising that keeps us afloat coupled with A Sea Of Numbers showing our financial results. On the back page is the Captain’s Log of thanks to all those who support us on our journey. In spring, 2012, MCSC launched a new management structure to guide MCSC into its next generation. This new tack gives Peter Rieck the opportunity to focus solely on boats and sailing after steering our ship for 28 great years. Curt Crain Our Captains Nick Hayes Tom Heinrich S. Our youth sailing taught 132 students (12-17) on Hunter 146’s and 420’s. We had 144 of our youngest sailors aged 8 to 11 in Prams in the Park classes. There were 3,630 hours of Open Sailing on our boats and that doesn’t include 2,200+ hours for Enrichment Club or the 3,000+ hours for instruction! Adaptive Sail Program More than 1,000 people took boat rides in 2012. Over 690 of them were persons with disabilities. Every Friday during the summer MCSC runs its Adaptive Sail Program (ASP) for those with physical or emotional disabilities. The Milw. County Office for Persons With Disabilities books clients for morning or afternoon sailing. MCSC staff and volunteers take all who come out on the lake in our Ensign keelboats. There is no charge for this program, MCSC does it as part of its mission to get anyone who wants to sail on the water. MCSC hosted 692 disabled residents thru this program in 2012. With a good ASP in place, US SAILING, the national governing body of the sport, awarded the 2013 US Disabled Sailing Championship to MCSC. Cookie Mueller and John Archibald will serve as the co-Chairs of the regatta. MCSC began to prepare its campus by installing a new front fence and entry way to allow easier access for the disabled, and by rebuilding its two Mariner Splash lifts that are used to get disabled sailors in and out of boats at the dock. The State of Wisconsin awarded MCSC a $20,000 grant to market the event across the country. Winter Classes Attendance at MCSC’s winter classes reached an all time high in 2012. The 30 classes had almost 560 students in the Sailing Center on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. The winter lecture series covers an array of sailing related topics and is offered to anyone in the greater Milwaukee boating community. Enrichment Program Our Enrichment Program builds on the water skills and confidence outside of classes thru Open Fridays, Spinnaker Saturdays and Racing Sundays. 251 members joined the Enrichment Club in 2012 MCSC Racing In 2012 Mid Season Championships July 28th Annual Quarter Barrel Regatta August Fall Regatta & Chili Chill Out September 15 MCSC Ensign Championships September 16 M i l w a u k e e C o m m u n i t y S a i l i n g Page 3 C e n t e r Where Our Voyage Takes Us Community Outreach Milwaukee Area Sailing Teens (MAST) is a scholarship program at MCSC used to allow children from families that qualify for the free or reduced cost lunch program to take free lessons. Once enrolled, they’re blended into all levels of youth classes. MAST students can be enrolled individually, but MCSC also partners will local agencies to offer sailing classes to their clients. Of the 276 youth learners at MCSC in 2012, 51 attended through MAST. Funding for this program came from the Service Club of Milwaukee and Sam’s Scholarships in 2012. 2012 Partner Agencies United Community Center New Beginnings Are Possible Boys & Girls Club Neighborhood House Pearls for Teen Girls Neu-Life Community Development Brookfield Recreation Center Our busiest day MCSC Member Activities MCSC members interested in additional racing time were invited to Crew Search Parties at SSYC and MYC for yacht club leagues, and MAST had a crew search event here at MCSC for their Friday night series. in 2012 was on The 2012 Summer Open House on June 23 was a very busy day. Boat rides were sold on Groupon - 96 sold in the first 24 hours!! After a quick chalk talk about basic sailing, our Volunteer Instructors took our guests out for a sail around the harbor. MCSC Ambassadors hosted Full Moon Sails again in July and August, pairing MCSC members with privately owned boats for a pot luck dinner followed by night time sailing, a new experience the 95 members who came out! Our Boating Friends The Great Lakes Sports Fisherman of Milwaukee and the WI Dept. of Natural Resources used MCSC docks to set pens that launch fingerlings to re-stock vital fish species. The spring planting saw nearly 80,000 Chinook released, and in the fall almost 20,000 Brown Trout went into our great lake! The pens allow the fish to acclimate and release at night, increasing their survival rates. MCSC hosted two training sessions with local law enforcement in 2012. The Milwaukee Harbor Patrol came in for a review of sailing to familiarize the officers at the beginning of the season. In August, the crew of RV Trident from the Milwaukee Fire Dept. used our campus for a week of Homeland Security training. Father’s Day! 58 members and 61 guests had boats out for 89 hours! In fall MCSC was able to purchase a third 420, ending its reliance on borrowed boats for its youth sailing classes. That purchase rounds out the fleet targeted by the 420 Challenge campaign. MCSC’s Soling fleet grew with the addition of Troika, a rebuilding project led by Dick Kinney and Nick Hayes. By summer’s end, the boat was entered in the Soling Worlds hosted by MYC. The Soling fleet sailors at MCSC also launched a dedicated fund for general fleet rigging and sail improvements. MCSC’s 153 “Dry Sail” members use MCSC for winter storage of boats in the off-season, summer storage of trailers and “day sailors”. Private boats owners leased 63 dinghy spaces in 2012 Our Volunteers Almost 3,400 hours of time In 2012, MCSC’s Volunteer Instructor’s donated an incredible 3,400+ hours to help teach our incoming students how to sail! Their knowledge, passion and dedication to helping the next wave of MCSC skippers is unparalleled. This year Teresa Coronado was chosen as the Volunteer Instructor of the Year. were volunteered in teaching sailing, giving rides and assisting on the water in 2012 New Technology MCSC embarked on three new platforms in 2012. A new twitter account was launched to share daily activities on the campus. Dubbed “Sidestay says...” it shared ongoing reports on campus happenings from our mascot and boatyard cat Sidestay. Our Facebook presence was greatly expanded over the year, with likes increasing by 26% to 903 followers. MCSC also sent out its first electronic donation request on Giving Tuesday (follows Black Friday and Cyber Monday in November). Fundraising Efforts “Bon Voyage” was the theme of the 17th Annual Sailors Ball’s in March as the event is moving from the ICC to MCSC going forward. The big raffle item was a trip to Costa Rica. As a finale to all the previous Sailor’s Balls, the evening honored all the volunteers at MCSC as the Sailors of the Year. The Lobster Boil, MCSC’s summer fundraiser, was held on the evening of August 31 on the grounds of the campus with 272 guests dining on lobster, peel n’ eat shrimp, chicken and ribs. A new treat in 2012 was an array of yummy desserts from Zilli’s Hospitality. The Windhover Community Room had its first full year of rental coordinated thru Zilli Hospitality Group, including eight weddings! In 2012 the Windhover Room was used for 47 events, providing over $22,750 to offset operating costs of the building.
