DearParents/Guardians,
StudentsattendingRosaParksHighSchoolduringthe2016-2017schoolyearwillhavethe
opportunitytoselectbooksthattheyareinterestedinandmotivatedtoreadduringthe
summer.Ouraimistokeepourstudentsconnectedtoreadinghabitsandcomprehension
thatwereintroducedduringtheschoolyear,withtheultimategoalofbuildingalovefor
readingwithinyourchild.
OurmissionatPatersonPublicSchoolsistoprepareeachstudentforsuccessincollegeand
acareer.RosaParks’studentswillreadatleastonenovelfromthelistbelowandcomplete
dialectaljournalsandvocabularycardgraphicorganizers.Whenthestudentsreturnin
September,theywilldevelopanessayinresponsetothenovelselected.Thetitlesshowthe
Lexilelevel(readabilitylevel)foreachtext.Yourchildshouldbeabletoreadand
understandallofthewordsonanygivenpageinthetext,withnomorethan5errorsforthe
texttobeatanappropriatelevel.Boththedialectaljournalsandthevocabularycards
shouldbesenttoschoolwithyourson/daughterontheirfirstdayofschoolinSeptember,
astheywillbeusedaspartoftheirfirstmarkingperiodgrade.
PleasejointheHighSchoolEnglishdepartmentinprovidingsupportandencouragementto
makereadinganimportantpartofyourchild’ssummer.Itisencouragedthatyouspeakto
