CHASS– La Vida Project
The La Vida, Girls 2 Girls, is an afterschool program at Cesar
Chavez Middle school sponsored by CHASS. The program
consists of a group of girls who create a safe place to talk
about important issues that are happening around them. The
big topics include how to prevent date rape and violence and
how they can speak out and support their friends. These conversations includes self-esteem, assertiveness, expressing
tough emotions, challenging gender norms, and in general,
talking about what healthy relationships look like.
The girls who participate in the program do an incredible job
expressing their thoughts, ideas, and opinions through their
words and different forms of art. Right now, Girls 2 Girls is
creating and directing a video project aimed at teaching other
middle school kids about teen dating violence. The film will
feature interviews, art displays, poetry and a skit illustrating
the different experiences that can occur from abusive relationship and teaches healthy dating tips. Below are some of
the girls written expressions which will be featured in the upcoming video:

El noviazgo no es violencia/A dating relationship is not
violence

La violencia tambien se mide/Violence is also measured

Un capricho no es amor verdadero/An obsession is not
true love

No maltratar/Don’t mistreat

Ser responsible/Be responsible

Tener valor/Have value

51st Annual Cinco De Mayo
Parade Sunday, May 3, 2015
This year our Parade Grand
Marshall will be none other than
our Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan! The Mexican Patriotic
Committee has worked hard to
bring this event to our Detroit
community. The Parade was
started over 90 years ago by
our Mexican Detroit ancestors
who wanted to celebrate their
culture and traditions with their
Detroit friends and family.
The Mexican Patriotic Committee was born out of those early
ancestors work and continues
today. Everyone is invited to
participate with over 150 organizations and businesses.
We ask that we have the community’s full support this year in
keeping this as a family oriented atmosphere where we can
celebrate our heritage in a
peaceful manner.
The parade route starts at Dix
and Vernor at 12:30 pm and
ends at Clark Park. For more
information on being part of the
parade call Belda Garza at
(313) 721-2154.

CHA Director’s Corner
We just celebrated 50 years of Selma, Alabama’s “Bloody Sunday” and the
impact of those brave people’s sacrifice, which we all benefit from today.
Many lost their lives advocating for voting rights. Today all over the world
people are still dying for the right to a human existence. A human existence
that includes housing, running water, basic healthcare and jobs.
This past Sunday a group of grieving parents from Ayotzinapa, Mexico visited Detroit to bring international awareness of what happened to 43 young
people who went to protest at a political rally in September of 2014. The
young protesters were intervened by Mexican police and no one has seen or
heard from them since then. It was sad to hear the parents stories of their
children and the dreams they had for them. Many were in school and educated enough to know the risks of protesting but like those young people
who marched at Selma, committed to a dream of a society where all have
access to the basics of a human existence. The parents request of us is to
pray for the safe return of their children, if they are alive, or the return of their
remains so they may have closure.
The parents are touring the United States with their story so that their children will be remembered for their bravery and not for the lies that are being
told about who their children were. Such a parallel to what happened to
those brave people who died at Selma, Alabama. This past week Wayne
State University bestowed their first ever posthumous honorary doctorate
degree to Viola Liuzzo, brave civil rights activist who died at Selma in 1965.
Her children present to receive the award stated, “now people will know that
what was said of our mother was not true”. Her bravery and commitment to
justice will be remembered every time her name is mentioned. Let us all be
inspired by these courageous hero's and commit to stay on the long road to
justice for all!

CHA Welcomes New Associate Members
The Consortium of Hispanic Agencies seeks to build the capacity of organizations and to have a greater impact on serving the expanding Latino community of Southwest Detroit. We welcome the Mexican Patriotic
Committee, Bombarica, and One Michigan.
These three organizations work to improve the lives of Latinos by
providing advocacy and education. One Michigan provides education
and advocacy on behalf of immigrants. They are working to get an identification card for all Wayne County residents similar to what New York
City developed with key benefits for purchasing the card, like free admission to museums and the zoo. The Mexican Patriotic Committee
and Bombarica provide culture appreciation through art, dance, music
and events such as the annual Cinco de Mayo Parade. The events
bring other ethnic groups to participate and strengthen our partnerships.
Their focus is on youth and through culture education they build the self
esteem of youth who will commit to stay in school and go on to higher
education. CHA commits to support these organizations with technical
assistance and to work as a collaborative to provide greater value to the
Southwest community,
