Sacred institutions,
secular societies.
A heterogeneous immigrant population and a commitment to religious
freedom have created in both the U.S. and Canada a striking variety of
Christian denominations. Robert Hand/s magisterial survey traces the
ways in which these churches were shaped by, and have in turn shaped,
the social and political life of the two nations, from colonial days to the
present. Encyclopedic in its range, this new reference is sure to aid all
students of church history, and of North American history, as well.
