Who are we?
The House of Panama is a non-profit
organization that presents the traditions,
music and culture of the Republic of
Panama; and contributes to fostering and
cultivating a spirit of understanding,
tolerance, and goodwill between all the
national groups residing in San Diego,
California, and around the world.
The House of Panama is the only
Panamanian cultural organization in a
museum setting outside of the Isthmus of
Panama. We are one of 32 National
Groups under the umbrella of the House of
Pacific Relations, International Cottages,
Inc., located in Balboa Park, San Diego,
CA.
What do we do?
As part of the House of Pacific Relations,
the House of Panama participates in many
cultural events. During the summer, the
House of Panama hosts the lawn program
where we highlight the national traditions
such as music, dance, costumes, arts,
crafts, and ethnic foods of Panama.
The House of Panama also has a folkloric
dance group known as “Sonares de Mi
Tierra”. This group performs in many
cultural events in San Diego County as
well as other cities in California and
throughout the world.
The House of Panama also participates in
annual special events: Ethnic Food Fair
and International Christmas Festival at
Balboa Park December Nights are two of
the well known events attended by
thousands of visitors.
What do we need?
What does Balboa Park have to
do with Panama?
Did you know that Balboa Park has its
name because the Park offered a wide view
of the Pacific Ocean, and explorer Vazco
Nuñez de Balboa was the first European to
see the Pacific Ocean from the coast of
Panama?
In 1915, San Diego staged the Panama-San
Diego Exposition to celebrate the completion
of the Panama Canal. San Diego was the first
American port of call north of the Panama
Canal on the Pacific coast. The Exposition
brought attention to the city and bolstered an
economy still shaky from the Wall Street
panic of 1907.
Balboa Park– Where? Why?
Balboa Park is the nation's largest urban
cultural park. Home to 15 major museums,
renowned performing arts venues, beautiful
gardens and the San Diego Zoo, the Park
has an ever-changing calendar of museum
exhibitions, plays, musicals, concerts, and
classes—all in the beautiful and timeless
setting of this must-see San Diego attraction.
Una casita (a little house). The House of
Panama’s ultimate goal is to build a house
as part of the International Cottages in
Balboa Park. In order to do that, we need
members, donors, and funds—lots of funds.
To be exact, we need $90,000 to get
architectural site plans created and
$160,000 in construction costs.
Why build a cottage?
Currently, the House of Panama shares
space in the House of Pacific Relations
International Cottages with 32 other nations
to promote multicultural goodwill and
understanding through educational and
cultural programs.
Although the House of Panama is currently
housed in a historic 1935 building, there is
no better way to showcase Panama’s
wonderful customs and culture than a
house built specifically to share Panama
with the residents of San Diego and all the
visitors from around the world who visit
America’s Finest City. This is why the
House of Panama’s main goal is to build a
cottage.
How can you help?
The easiest way to help is to become a
member of the House of Panama. The
more people that know about the House of
Panama’s goals, the easier it will be to raise
funds. The House of Panama is a 501(c)(3)
- non-profit organization so all donations are
tax deductible. Funds raised by the House
of Panama will be used exclusively for the
building of a cottage.
If you or your
business wants to make a donation to a
worthy cause, please make it to the House
of Panama.
