Issue 27 Music Edition February 26, 2007 Big Stick, High Hopes In L.A. Most everyone in the country music community was initially excited over last Friday’s announcement that Mt. Wilson Broadcasting was foregoing its 540 AM and 1260 AM Country simulcast to turn Classical KMZT/Los Angeles into KKGO “Go Country 105.” But then the questions began – most notably about the signal. I even got an email from a label president over the weekend who asked, “Does the signal cover the right areas for us?” From all accounts, the answer is a resounding “yes.” Addressing that issue specifically, RadioCrunch consultancy President and L.A. resident Anthony Acampora told Country Aircheck, “KKGO has one of the top five or six signals in L.A. In fact, in most respects it has a better signal than KZLA had. KKGO has 18kw, non-directional on Mt. Wilson. KZLA also had 18kw and, although it was a bit further up the mountain than KKGO’s stick, KZLA was directional.” Mt. Wilson Broadcasting owner Saul Levine says that the 105.1 FM signal has a 100-mile range. “It goes from Santa Barbara in the north to Riverside on the east to Southern Orange County in the South,” he said, adding, “When you add 540 AM covering San Diego, we now reach over 20 million people – no other Country station has the reach we do.” Levine also dispelled any notion that he would be doing L.A. Country on the cheap. “This is going to be a top-notch Country station,” he says. “We’ve already hired great people known among L.A. Country fans and we’re going to have the best programming people in the U.S. around us. We’re not going to fool around.” There may be well over 22 million reasons for Levine not to fool around. We also have an early evening event on Thursday at the Wildhorse, which was usually a time that was completely open.” ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d. (continued from page 1) Levine sees the potential, of course. “Emmis has dumped a huge opportunity in our laps. That may not be enough for Emmis or Clear Channel to do Country, but we’d be absolutely delighted with over $20 million in billing.” KMZT billed $4.8 million in 2006, and the future was bleak. “Our January year-to-year was down 40% and we projected 2007 to be down 80% from ’06,” said Levine. “We lost KZMT’s biggest advertiser in January when an agency didn’t renew an annual deal for BMW. Our median age was 60, and agencies just weren’t interested in those demos for any advertisers. The handwriting was on the wall.” Levine initially thought he could capture listener hearts and agency wallets with his AM combo. But that wasn’t working. “We didn’t get any respect for our AMs,” he said. “We had ©2 0 0 7 Co u nt r y Ai rc h e c k ™ — Al l r i g ht s re s e r ve d. Agencies said we had to be on FM. We got the message and put Country on our FM. Now everyone’s happy.” Even though Levine’s FM had only been Country for a few hours when reached by Country Aircheck, he said he had already felt an incredibly positive response. “Every agency in town has said they’ll be buying us,” he said. “A number told us they just didn’t appreciate the Country format, had taken it for granted and didn’t realize how much they would miss it until it was gone. They told us they’d be supporting us because they want us to stay around. What we’ve heard so far has been beyond our wildest expectations.” Vital Signs: In the Fall 2006 Arbitron, KMZT moved 1.2-1.5 in L.A while also notching a .5 in the Riverside-San Bernardino book. In Winter 2006, KMZT posted a 1.2 in R-SB. >According to Mediabase, which has been monitoring KKGO-AM since last December and is now surveying the FM, KKGO is 22% current, 22% recurrent and 56% gold. >Mt.
