RICE
During the first 48 to 72 hours the early
management of soft tissue injury is
embodied in the acronym RICE and is
essential to kick start the healing process:
Rest Ice Compression Elevation

Cryotherapy (crushed ice) for 10 to 20 min, 2 to 4 times / day for the first 2 to 3 days
is helpful in promoting early return to full activity. It helps with pain and reduces
swelling. Be careful not to apply ice directly to the skin as you may suffer an ice
burn. If in doubt consult a Harris & Ross physiotherapist for advice.
Ice and compression has been shown to be
more effective than ice or compression on

Our clinicians understand that early mobilization, guided
by the pain response, promotes a more rapid return to full
activity. We are very fortunate to have the only dedicated
deep water hydrotherapy pool and motorised floom pool
in Manchester as well as an anti-gravity alter G treadmill
that will help to get you moving early without pain.
Progressive resistance exercises are essential to restore
full muscle and joint function.
For example, if you have a lower limb injury you may be given floor-based exercise
off your feet to begin with before you progress to bodyweight exercise followed by a
resistance program in one of our gyms to return you to full strength.
For a Harris & Ross Physio your rehabilitation is only complete
when the injured and adjacent tissues are restored to full pain-free
functional capacity. At Spire Manchester we have an isokinetic
machine that tests the strength of your injured limb compared
with your uninjured one. At Total Fitness, Wilmslow we also have
force platform equipment and a balance biodex machine to help
us assess your function and give us both objective data to guide
your progression and set future goals for your rehab.
