Dear beloved church family, The first snowfall of winter has arrived in Spokane! The fall season is quickly changing to winter, and with the shift comes swapping out tires, firing up logs for the fireplace, and purchasing snow melt. This is the season of enjoying family and friends, bundling up in warm blankets, serving up hot cocoa, and spending time reflecting on the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ. Our church began preparing for the beautiful day of Christmas by decorating our church sanctuary and fellowship hall in green garlands, hanging wreaths, raising Christmas trees, and lighting Christmas lights and Advent candles. It is such a delight entering into our church and feeling the love of the holidays. As the interior of our church building prepares for the pageantry of Christmas, we also prepare our hearts, minds, and souls through the teachings of Scripture. Through the season of Advent, we learn to keep watch for the return of Jesus Christ by living into righteousness each and every day. We are reminded to be repentant of our wrongdoings and turn to Jesus for forgiveness and reconciliation. We learn to see with the eyes of faith and discern our dreams with the wisdom of God. Advent is the annual reminder to take pause from being busy for the sake of the holidays and remember Jesus, God coming down to earth as a little baby to become our Lord and Savior. What an amazing, wonderful, and extraordinary mystery to behold! Each year, at the beginning of Advent we assemble our Advent wreath as a symbol of our journey toward Christmas. Our Advent wreath begins with a circular base of garland to represent a never-ending cycle of life—a continuum—that is always with us. There are four candles that surround the wreath, three purple candles and a pink candle, including a white candle in the center. The purple candles represent hope, peace, and love while the pink candle stands for joy. The white candle sits as the centerpiece of the Advent wreath to symbolize Christ. The Christ candle embodies all characteristics of hope, peace, joy, and love and is forever with us just like our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. May Christ be at the center of your life and families filling you with hope, peace, joy, and love every day of your life! Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
