Welcome to Barondale! We are so happy that your children will be joining our school in September 2012
for the French Immersion program. This newsletter will provide you with some important facts about our
school as well as the French Immersion program.
Barondale Public School celebrates diversity and values inclusion. With 38 different languages spoken by
students and families, Barondale provides many opportunities for parents to network through School Council
functions, Welcome to Kindergarten and ESL Parent Nights. Our staff are committed to ensuring that
every child has the opportunity to learn according to his or her needs. They utilize a variety of learning
styles in their teaching so that students can learn through different ways such as through pictures, texts,
listening, drama, movement, and technology.
Barondale has an outstanding Music program where students learn to sing music of different styles and
cultures and learn to use a variety of instruments. We also have an exemplary Physical Education program
where students participate in team games, individual skill building and special events. Our teacher Librarian
ensures that quality reading material from a variety of genres is available for student use, as well as
maintaining our Guided Reading library from which teachers access materials for small group reading in the
classroom. For more information about our school, visit the school website:

As part of the French Immersion program, your child will learn the Ontario Curriculum that is taught to all
students; however, in addition they will develop fluency in French through the program. The program
provides a balance of French and English instruction and teachers will collaborate together to provide
instruction that stimulates inquiry and develops a love of learning. You will have another opportunity to visit
our school in June for our French Immersion Open House. Thank you for your interest in our program at
Barondale. We look forward to working together to help your child grow and learn!

FRENCH IMMERSION
INSTRUCTION
IS FRENCH IMMERSION RIGHT
FOR MY CHILD?
The goal of French Immersion is fluency in
French. By the end of high school, students will
be able to speak, read and write in French and will
have had more than 6000 hours of French
instruction.
The balance of instruction for
Grades 1-5 immersion is:
Grade 1
85% French
Grades 2-5
50% French
A successful French Immersion student has
strong skills in their first language, likes to talk
and work in groups, enjoys books, demonstrates
confidence in learning new things and manages
transitions well. Even though English may not be
your child’s first language, your child may be a
good candidate if he or she has strong skills in his
or her first language.
French Immersion teachers are highly qualified
and are proficient in speaking, reading and writing
in French. By the end of Grade 1 your child will
be able to:
- follow written and verbal instruction in
French
- speak in French about familiar topics
- pronounce French words correctly
- read short, simple materials in French
- follow simple written instructions
- produce short, simple pieces of writing in
French
Students in Grade 3 will write the EQAO
assessment in English.
French Immersion may not be the right choice for
your child at this time if your child is struggling
with transition to school, experiences learning
difficulties or performs below average in his or
her first language. Children who will be absent
for school for extended periods beyond
consecutive 15 days will be demitted from the
French Immersion program and will need to return
to their home school.
WAYS TO HELP AT HOME
Students joining French Immersion do not need to
have previous French experience. Parents do not
need to be able to speak or understand French in
order to support their child’s learning at home.
Here are some ways you can help at home:
-
watch French children’s shows such as
Caillou
-
borrow French books and CD’s from the
public library
play French games
visit
French
websites
such
as
www.frenchstart.ca and www.momes.net
enroll your child in French summer camp
listen to your child read in French
continue to support your child’s first
language at home by reading together
subscribe to a French children’s magazine
join the Canadian Parents for French:

CHARACTER MATTERS
SCHOOL COUNCIL
Each month we have a Celebrations Assembly to
showcase a different character trait.
All
students have the opportunity to receive an award
at some point during the school year. Books
related to the monthly trait are circulated
throughout the school so that students can
develop an understanding of what that trait looks
like, feels like and sounds like.
Our School Council is actively involved in making
Barondale a caring and inclusive school community.
The School Council takes an active role in
fundraising for the school and supporting School
Success initiatives. School Council also fosters
the building of parent connections through special
