The Issue 7/10 - Volume 119 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club Masthead August/September 2016 Jim Emmi – Celebration of His Life Jim Emmi, brilliant engineer, successful developer, Newport Beach pioneer, philanthropist to many organizations, sailor extraordinaire and loving husband to Catherine, was honored at a Celebration of Life June 25, at his beloved Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Jim passed away May 14, just one month short of his 100th birthday. A man who lived life to the fullest, Jim was adored by his wife, Catherine, and son, Cameron Pearce. They are proud of his accomplishments and wanted to honor him, as he has done so much for the community. A good place to start to show Jim’s joy of life, would be the Emmi’s Nautor 43 Swan sloop, Pele, named after the volcano goddess. This boat represents the intense energy that Jim and Catherine spent supporting important events. Purchased in 1978, Jim sailed her from Finland, arriving in Newport Beach after an 11-month voyage, with a revolving crew of family and friends. A legendary ocean sailor, he flew the BCYC burgee throughout the long journey. He was commodore of BCYC, a member for over 44 years, and helped the club financially in its early days. A couple of years ago, a committee boat was donated and appropriately named Emmi. Over the years, Jim participated in over 100 races on the Swan and a previous Islander 37, winning many trophies. He participated in 23 Newport to Ensenada races and was very proud of racing in the inaugural BCYC Around the Islands Race in 2016, an overnight 125-mile competition involving rounding Catalina, Sutil and Santa Barbara Islands, beginning and ending in Newport Beach. Jim, along with Catherine, was an avid golfer, belonging to Newport Beach Golf Course. Living in Irvine Terrace for many years made it convenient to get to their yacht club, golf club, and the Balboa Bay Club. Jim was one of the original residents in this area, specifically planning to be close to the places he enjoyed. He was the president of Kimberly Development Company and a manager of apartment properties. He was a member of the Chapman University Board of Trustees and served on the Pacific Symphony Board of Trustees since 1990. His friends will miss having a conversation with Jimmy, as he had his mischievous side, a laugh you continually wanted to hear and a heart of gold. This, the original Renaissance man, who loved so much, was grateful for it all, and showed his appreciation. When Jim met Catherine at an SOS (Share Our Selves, an Orange County nonprofit) event in China Cove, at the home of Kathy and Jerry Thompson, he knew he had met his match. Catherine, a kindergarten teacher for over 25 years, had more liveliness than the 30-plus children in each of her classes, as Jim would attest. The Emmis have been true music lovers, understanding its importance to our community, and generously supported the Pacific Symphony since 1987. Wishing to advance health care in Orange County and beyond, the Emmi Family donated to the Hoag Hospital Foundation to support the Hoag Neurosciences Institute. “Every gift, large or small, stands out and makes a difference,” stated Jim, who hoped to inspire others to give. Jim fully represented the pay it forward philosophy, so vital in today’s world. In 2013, Jim and Catherine were Chapman University’s Citizen of the Year. They were honored for supporting Serving People in Need (SPL) and were hailed as “OC Heroes of Philanthropy,” joining other big-hearted Orange County citizens. Let’s give Jim a perpetual toast for making the world a better place. - Sue Edelstein, Emmi family friend - Photo By Sue Edelstein August/September 2016 Executive Officers Commodore. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . This is a perfect opportunity for seasoned members to provide our newest members with some history and great stories about BCYC. We are excited to welcome the folks who joined the BCYC family in the past few months. They were: Michael and Lisa Bancroft, Regular Flag Stephen Brand, Regular Flag Shane and Rebecca Corbin, Regular Flag Matthew and Elizabeth Hawkins, JFlag David and Maryann Johndrow, Regular Flag Darlena Monet, Regular Flag Thomas and Mary O’Rourke, Regular Flag David Reed, Regular Flag We want all members to be involved. There are many great opportunities to become an important part of BCYC – please contact us and we can help you know where your talents and enthusiasm can best be utilized. Make plans to attend the Oct. 7 cocktail party! ? It’s been a quiet summer for ongoing projects at the club. We are currently in the process of getting bids for improvements to be done on the main floor of the clubhouse. As you know, this is where most of the wear and tear occurs and we are focusing on areas needing the most attention. These improvements will include refinished woodwork, carpeting and new or refinished chairs and table tops in the Columbia Room. Our goal is to have as much work as possible done during the Christmas holiday when the club is closed. We have new sink top accessories in the men’s and women’s restrooms on the main floor, as well as the lower level. These items are a gift to the club from Las Commodoras. Thank you, Nancy Bryant, for pulling this together. A Different Kind of Cruise All categories of membership are growing, a very positive sign. The JFlag group has held three events, getting to know each other and talking about how they can make this class of members stronger. DID YOU KNOW Improvements Important Stuff This July, several members and friends of BCYC took off to cruise the San Juan Mountain Range of Colorado by jeep. Under the burgee of the Bahia Corinthian Jeep Club (BCJC), Staff Commodore Mary and Bob Bacon, Staff Commodore Steve and Diane Askew, Director Bill and Kristy Parr, Dwight and Linda Yeoman, and Robin and Cathy Miller (Mary’s sister) explored high mountain passes, old mining camps and hillsides of wildflowers. They traveled the trails between the rustic towns of Creed, Lake City, Silverton and Ouray. They even snuck in brunch at the home of Staff Commodore Terry and Norma Mulligan in Durango. BCJC trips are always in the works. For more information, please contact Director Parr or Staff Commodore Bacon. Did you know that your guests will not be served in the Columbia Room or Dining Room until you arrive, unless you have arranged for their guest pass in advance? Did you know that the code to the marina gates has been changed and can be obtained from the club office? Did you know that the club has a Harbor 20 for members to check out once they have been certified? Contact the club office for certification details. 4 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club The Masthead Vice Commodore Commodore Vice Sandy Wert Mills Chuck Angling Rhonda Tolar [email protected] [email protected] [email protected] Angling Fishing [email protected] Calling All Boaters As I have stated in the past, one of the duties of the vice commodore is to oversee, assist and implement the club’s on-the-water activities. One of the primary goals at BCYC is promoting yachting, be it our Junior Program, racing programs or cruising. Each of these endeavors requires the efforts of teams of member volunteers and staff, who graciously give their time to ensure that whatever our yachting interest, it will be fulfilled beyond our expectations. A great example of this teamwork is Taco Tuesday, where we regularly host racing, a great buffet for more than 100 people and more than 30 boats each Tuesday during the summer. Our Clambake cruise to the Del Rey Yacht Club Catalina Island station, under the guidance of Rhonda Tolar, and assisted by Cruise Chairs Secretary Steve and Lauri Moffett, hosted some 75 members and their children aboard 20 boats. We were treated to an outstanding event filled with great food and events for everyone. This cruise was preceded by our Dana Point raft-up that culminated in a dinner at which Kari and Staff Commodore Paul Konapelsky graciously entertained 81 members and guests for dinner at their home. Many members drove down for the dinner, and we had 11 boats in Dana Point Harbor. Clambake used to be a sell-out, with over 150 members attending, and our other cruises generally would have at least 20 boats participating. Our marina is full, so there is no reason we should not get out and support these hardworking volunteers and staff, who are constantly arranging and organizing opportunities for all of us to use our boats and enjoy the local waters. Please let me, or any of the Race or Cruise Committee members know, if you have any suggestions that may have been overlooked that would improve participation. Also, this is the time of year we look for members to lead or participate in our various committees for the coming year – if you or someone you think might be interested, please let us know. August/September 2016 Fever! WOW, what a catch! Our very own junior sailing director, Cameron MacLaren, recently caught a magnificent 128.5-pound bluefin tuna. I asked Cameron to give us the tale of his catch. “It was an epic day of offshore tuna fishing near Oceanside on June 20. Captain Nate Dunham struck first and hooked one on a popper, landing a 70-pound bluefin within 10 minutes. Shortly after, I got in a nice long cast over the top of an anchovy cloud and got a hit halfway through the wind. We both saw the fish roll on my popper and knew it was a bigger model. From the beginning, it pulled like a freight train and never really let up, so I started tightening drag several clicks every few minutes. I got him up to 50 feet below the boat after 30 minutes, but could not seem to gain any headway from there. He continued dogging me for the next hour. “Time rolled on and I kept cranking drag until I literally couldn’t get another click, and even with it buttoned, I was still losing as much as I was gaining. With my limbs shaking, I doubted I would physically be able to win the fight. Thanks to some motivational words from Nate, I dug as deep as I could to keep his head turned and got him to the surface. When I finally got the fish next to the boat, Nate went in with the gaff, but the tip deflected off its incredibly thick skin. He quickly followed up with a solid gaff, after which I exchanged my rod for another gaff and set mine. It took every bit of our combined strength to get that fish over the gunwale. This picture is the ending of my great day, weighing my fish at the Balboa Angling Club.” “Kiss Your Catch” update – Vice Commodore Chuck Wert kissed his first catch during our club 24+ hour fishing challenge during the Long Beach Yacht Club cruise! Let’s get out on the water and have some fun. That’s why many of us joined BCYC. A Note from our Chaplain . . . “The difference between school and life? Summer Memories The Junior Staff Commodore’s cruise to San Diego, where we visited San Diego and Coronado Yacht Clubs, was a real treat. Thanks to Junior Staff Commodore Craig and Joan Delaney for planning such a great trip with perfect weather. The Dana Point raft-up and beach party at the home of Staff Commodore Paul and Kari Konapelsky was a blast! We anchored seven boats near the Marine Institute and four more were in guest slips. With the water at 76 degrees, everyone jumped off their boats and enjoyed a group swim! Thank you, Kari and Paul, for opening your home and putting on a fabulous party, and special thanks to all who helped with this cruise. Visit the club website to see the event pictures. Wow, what a summer – BCYC members enjoyed some fantastic events at our club. Remember how beautiful the club looked for the Father’s Day Art and Car Show event? It’s always amazing to see the creativity that our members have. Our August Clambake was back at the Del Rey Yacht Club facility in Cat Harbor. Our “Under the Sea” festivities included barbecues, a luau, dinghy mystery game, Bunco, and buildand race-your-own boat. Thank you to Rhonda Tolar, fabulous cruise captain, and all who helped over the weekend. We greatly appreciated all that was done by General Manager Scott Jones, Chef George Rapicault and the club staff – the food and libations were great! We had our fill of pizza, popcorn and movie candy, too, at the Patio Movie Nights, featuring “Guardians of the Galaxy,” “Finding Nemo” and then finishing off summer with the classic, “Captain Ron.” The made-to-order pizzas, hot out of the new ovens, were amazing. Next up – Cambria Land Cruise, Sept. 30-Oct. 2. This is a land cruise where we will drive up the coast to Cambria for the Scarecrow Festival! Plan to leave Newport Beach and stop for lunch in Pismo Beach at the Ventana Grill on the 30th. Saturday, our bus will take us to three wineries and lunch. Saturday night will be a group dinner in town. NO BOAT NEEDED, so please consider joining us. The cruise to Avalon, Oct. 21-23, will be our last cruise for 2016. Sign up begins Sept. 24 for this popular cruise. If you don’t have a boat, consider getting a room on the island. More details will follow, but we will have our famous Mini Golf tournament for the coveted Konapelsky Trophy. Of course, who could forget how patriotic the club was dressed for the Fourth of July Family Potluck Patio Party. Juver Garcia and Mario Nieto got the club ready, and Linda Ritchie headed the Activities Committee decorating team. Remember dancing to the fun tunes provided by Steve Woods and then finding the perfect spot to view the fireworks? Capping off the summer with Tuscany on the Terrace was a highlight. Revelers stomped grapes, rode in a gondola, and dined on delicious creations by Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary team, while dancing the night away under the stars to the sounds of Hot Club de Bop. Now it’s time to start thinking about the fall season, including the Cowboy Western Roundup, Oct. 29, Awards Night on Nov. 5, and decorating the club for the holiday season the weekend of Nov. 19-21. Please come join us to plan these activities and more on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 8 at 7 p.m., there will be an important Cruise Committee meeting. Please come and give us your input as we discuss a new “adventure cruises” idea and locations for the 2017 cruising season. We look forward to seeing you there. The frog legs were wonderful and a fun topic of discussion! Del Mar Race Day in July was a great success. More than 30 BCYC members and guests enjoyed roundtrip transportation, reserved seating in the II Palio Patio section — where we had a fabulous lunch — and betting the ponies! A day at the races is not complete without the “best hat” contest. Diane DiMaria captured first place, with Jane Stratton a close runner-up. Congratulations ladies. Race Day in 2017 will be something you won’t want to miss. We are looking forward to an afternoon at Sherman Gardens and Library on Sept. 15. Lunch and a wonderful garden tour will be another fun day. The BCYC Junior Board is happy to report this BCYC summer has been a great one! Our junior sailors have dominated on the water, delicious burgers have been served every Friday at Burger Bash, and we are all enjoying a happy summer on the bay. The year has flown by, and I’m amazed this is my last Masthead article as BCYC’s junior commodore. Since becoming a junior director in 2009, I’ve risen through the ranks and have learned so much. I loved working together with such a talented team, and we’ve accomplished great things. My special thanks goes to all of the current junior board members, especially the officers, for being such terrific partners; showing incredible dedication to the club. I’d also like to thank Commodore Sandy Mills and the senior board for their support of our efforts. We will have Poker Night again and hope you are all up for the challenge! I’d also like to thank all of the BCYC members, friends and family who attended Le BCYC Bingo. We could not have done it without you, and invite you to join us for more bingo in 2017. Lastly, I thank my mom, Mrs. Mara Hampton, for her service as the junior board advisor. Your care, consideration and commitment to excellence led us to new heights! I’m leaving the board in great hands. Sammy Pickell is BCYC’s next junior commodore, and I know she will lead the juniors through another phenomenal year. I hope you’ve all had as great a summer as I have, and know that BCYC will continue to thrive as one of the best yacht clubs. Cheers to the future. Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club 7 The Masthead August/September 2016 Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua Sail Fleet Captain [email protected] Paul DeCapua [email protected] A Really Big Shew Those of us with some snow on the roof will remember the “Ed Sullivan Show,” an early TV program that featured a variety of performers, from the Beatles to Señor Wences. Ed would frequently say, “We have a really big shew tonight,” and the fun would begin. Well, not to be outdone, I wanted to tell you that August and September racing will prove to be an equally big shew. Taco Tuesdays wound up with five evenings of racing/ partying in August. Did you experience the club on Taco Tuesdays? Were you able to find an empty table? Make plans to be part of this event in 2017. The Angelman Series winds up in September. After three months of multiple windward-leeward races, the “best overall” position is still up for grabs. September is also Club Championship month. On the 17th and 18th, members will race windward-leeward courses to compete for the “Family Division” and “Championship Division” trophies. As I’ve mentioned before, get certified so that you can practice on the club’s Harbor 20. September 24 is the Harbor 20 Tune-Up race. You will see more windward-leeward racing (five rapid-fire races…twice around the marks). This is a really great event for spectators. Like Ed’s audience, you will be in for quite a shew. More racing is in store in future months, including the NOSA 14-Mile Bank Race in October, the AOCYC Fall Finale in November and our own Hot Rum Series in November, December and January! Visit the club office to purchase your burgee stickers! Fantasy Sail 2016 Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club will host the Gary Jobson Fantasy Sail Dec. 2-3. For 18 years, BCYC members have been involved in raising funds for Leukemia and Lymphoma research through the Leukemia Cup Regattas, a series of sailing events that combine the joy of boating with the important task of raising money for LLS to help find a cure for blood cancers. Participants have raised more than $58 million to help advance the LLS mission since the regatta series’ inception in 1987. BCYC has been involved since 1998, with the club’s events raising just over $1 million! For the past 11 years, Staff Commodore Ted and Connie O’Connor have had the opportunity to race against sailors from other parts of the United States who have also participated in LLS regattas. The Gary Jobson Fantasy Sail is an annual gathering involving the country’s regatta sailors who raise the most money for LLS. It is hosted by Leukemia Cup Chairman Gary Jobson, the tactician on Ted Turner’s American’s Cup winner, Courageous, in 1976, and an internationally known ESPN and Olympics sailing broadcaster, author and lecturer, and leukemia survivor. Each year, a different yacht club is chosen by Gary to host the event. The 2015 regatta was held at Royal Bermuda Yacht Club, where it was announced that the next gathering would be at Long Beach Yacht Club. Ted asked Jobson and Marty Siederer, from the national LLS office, to reconsider. After presenting strong reasons for having the event in Newport Beach, it was determined that BCYC would be the 2016 Fantasy Sail host. With outstanding help from Sail Fleet Captain Paul DeCapua and BCYC LLS regatta chair, Nancy Levy, BCYC is putting together an exciting event for the expected 150 participants from yacht clubs around the United States. “All of our Fantasy Sail qualifiers are looking forward to a great weekend of sailing, but most importantly, to hearing updates on the progress made in fighting blood cancers,” said Jobson. “The sailing community has provided amazing support for LLS and I am living proof of the progress that has been made with fighting these diseases. However, so much more needs to be done to offer help and hope to the patients and their families on the front lines of the cancer battle.” Please contact Staff Commodore Ted O’Connor if you would like to help BCYC welcome these outstanding sailors, leading the way to finding a cure.
