Initially launched at the London 2012 Olympics, the GIFT boxes have proven to be successful in large-scale awareness raising, introducing people to the issue of human trafficking and inspiring them to take further action. In addition, the volunteers at the box are in a unique position to gather community knowledge on the issue. Not only has the box been hosted in over 30 locations throughout the UK, but it has also been launched in Slovakia, the USA and Brazil! Hundreds of volunteers have been trained to host the box and became advocates for ending human trafficking- engaging thousands of community members. STOP THE TRAFFIK and UN.GIFT STOP THE TRAFFIK STOP THE TRAFFIK is global movement of activists around the world who passionately give their time and energy to build resilient communities and prevent human trafficking. We are a campaigning organisation that seeks to build a traffik-free world! STOP THE TRAFFIK equips people to understand what trafficking is, how it affects them and what they can do about it. We gather and analyse information from communities about how and where trafficking is happening. We partner with local and global law enforcement agencies. We engage business to eradicate trafficking from their supply chains. Individuals, communities, organisations, front-line professionals, faith groups, businesses, schools and charities are all part of STOP THE TRAFFIK. Since 2006 we have been building a global movement. From Australia, to Brazil. From the Netherlands, to Canada. From downtown New York to the most remote communities in India, together we are taking action to STOP THE TRAFFIK! www.stopthetraffik.org Page | 3 United Nations Global Initiative to Fight Trafficking (UN.GIFT) By encouraging and facilitating cooperation and coordination, the United Nations Initiative to Fight Human Trafficking (UN.GIFT) aims to create synergies among the anti-trafficking activities of UN agencies, international organisations and other stakeholders to develop the most efficient and cost-effective tools and good practices. UN.GIFT works to ensure that everybody takes responsibility for this fight. www.ungift.org The GIFT Boxes Page | 4 Design Each GIFT box is a walk-in piece of public art, symbolising the way in which traffickers entice their victims with false promises. The outside of the box offers the “gift” of a brighter new life. Bright and beguiling, people can’t help but be intrigued. Once inside they realise the deception. They are confronted with a three dimensional, thoughtprovoking and interactive experience, which introduces the grim reality that victims of human trafficking are forced into. The stories in the boxes are all based on cases that have taken place in the UK. Names have been changed and models have been used for the photography to protect the identity of the victims. A box is approximately 7 foot square (2.3 metres square) and 11 foot high (3.35 metres high), weather, fire and vandal proof, and weighs approximately 600kg. It can be flat packed for transport. Please note that a minimum of 10 foot (3 metres) is required around the GIFT box to allow for construction. Types There are four different types of GIFT box, each one has a different colour and Page | 5 represents a different form of trafficking prevalent in the UK. The four types are: Domestic servitude (pink; stored in Peterborough) Forced street crime (green; stored in Manchester) Sexual exploitation (yellow; stored in London) Forced labour (blue; stored in Peterborough) Helpline The GIFT boxes, leaflets and website all display the Metropolitan Police Anti-Human Trafficking Helpline number. This number can be used to report any suspected incidences of human trafficking in the UK. The helpline number is 0800 7832 589; in case of immediate danger phone 999. If somebody is uncomfortable calling a helpline run by the police, give them the Salvation Army Victim Advice number 0300 303 8151. Leaflets STOP THE TRAFFIK leaflets can be supplied for your event at a cost, and can be ordered via our website (www.stopthetraffik/shop).
