Ancient Rome Study Guide Long ago Ancient Rome was a country and was located on 3 continentsEurope, Africa, and Asia. Today Rome is a city in the country of Italy, on the continent of Europe. Italy is a peninsula that sticks out into the Mediterranean Sea. Italy is easy to spot on the map because it looks just like a boot. A contribution is the act of giving or doing something. Contributions from Ancient Rome: 1. 2. 3. Architecture Government Sports Architecture is how buildings are designed and made. Roman architecture used a lot of columns (like the Greeks) and arches. The Romans used representative democracy. People voted for a smaller group of citizens. Those citizens made the rules and laws for everyone. The United States uses representative democracy, an idea that came from the ancient Romans. People elect representatives to make laws for them. A republican form of government is another term for this. This is different from direct democracy, which the ancient Greeks used, when everyone votes to make the rules and laws. Traders 1 2 3 4 The people of Ancient Rome adapted to their environment by farming and trading. They farmed on the hillsides using terraced farming. Grapes and olives were prized crops. They also traded along the Mediterranean Sea to get what they needed and wanted. The Romans enjoyed art very much and created mosaics, sculptures, and paintings to make their buildings more beautiful. Sports: The Romans held chariot races and gladiator fights. They also participated in the Olympics.
