TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
Today, the languages of the whole
world arise to God in a Pentecost of
praise. In some American dioceses, the
Mass is offered every Sunday in more
than thirty different languages, including
the silent praise of American Sign Language. Fifty years ago, the landscape of
liturgy was very different. It was grounded
firmly in Latin, which is to the present day
still the official language of the Roman
Rite. Very few people were fluent in Latin,
even though in those days Latin was far
more widely studied in school. Nevertheless, almost every Catholic was competent in the responses and chants of Latin
since it is not difficult to pronounce. The
clergy were normally minimally competent
in Latin, since much of seminary education was conducted in that language.
When the Second Vatican Council was
convened, all of the debate and daily
work of the council was to be in Latin. In
the first session in 1962, Boston’s Cardinal Richard Cushing continually complained about it, and threatened not to return in 1963 if something wasn’t done. He
convinced the fathers when he rose to
speak in fairly fluent Latin in an unforgettable Boston twang. The next year, he returned, but with a simultaneous translation system funded by the people of Boston. The ordinary everyday language of
the people, the vernacular, had arrived at
the Vatican via Boston!

prompts them.

Stewardship Means Sharing Our Time, Talent, & Treasure
The use of Church envelopes or Online Giving is the responsible way to support our parish faith community. Therefore, we strongly encourage our parishioners to use the WEEKLY OFFERTORY ENVELOPES or ONLINE GIVING for the success of the operation of
the Parish and for their sacrificial gift to the Parish. We also depend on the financial support of its people in all its endeavors. The weekly envelopes or online giving help keep in
mind our duty to regularly contribute to the Church's mission and to share a percentage of
our God-given talents and blessings through charitable organizations such as the Church.
We are called to be good stewards of all God entrusts to us, especially our time, talent
and treasure. By making a regular, weekly commitment to the Parish, one that is consistent with all other weekly expenses for necessities, luxuries and the like, Catholics give
witness to their faith and to the place God and His Church hold among all their other endeavors, plans and dreams.
If you are not receiving envelopes or giving online and would like to, please contact the
church office at (806-762-5225). If you are absent for any reason on a particular weekend
Mass, please mail your contribution to St. Elizabeth University Parish (2305 Main Street,
Lubbock, TX 79401). Please prayerfully remember that your support is essential to help
keep our faith community alive.
Remember: Give God what is right, not what is left.

TRAVEL WITH BISHOP COERVER TO THE HOLY LAND – January 1526, 2018 - Most Rev. Robert Coerver, Bishop of Lubbock and Reverend
Don Zeiler, pastor of St. Gabriel the Archangel parish in McKinney, invite
you to join them for an inspiring pilgrimage to the Holy Land. Travel during a
beautiful time of the year in the Holy Land--crowds are thinner and access
to sites much nicer. The program balances archaeological, religious and
cultural opportunities. Learn more about the rich cultural life of local people
by enjoying their hospitality, food and art. Celebrate Mass each day at sites
where Jesus and his early disciples gathered and/or where pilgrims have
gathered over the centuries. The program also includes a visit to the spectacular site of Petra, in Jordan. This is an enchanting place where monuments are carved into the orange rock and sandstone. En route, we will visit
Mt. Nebo where Moses looked out over the Promised Land. Join for a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity to walk in the footsteps of visionary men and women of faith and connect with your own faith heritage.

PRAYER TO
SAINT MICHAEL
THE ARCHANGEL
St. Michael the
Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against
the wickedness and snares of the
Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Quintana, and Spiritual Director Father
Rudi Crasta.
Last week we heard that, following
the Ascension, the disciples, Mary,
and other followers of the Lord retreated to the upper room in prayer. This
week we hear that, while praying in
that room, the Holy Spirit comes upon
them. Jesus’ post-Resurrection promise, recounted in today’s Gospel, is
fulfilled: the power of the Holy Spirit
comes upon Jesus’ followers. Saint
Paul tells us that all of us, in some
way, are given gifts of the Holy Spirit,
gifts that can be used to spread the
Good News. Today is one of the
Church’s greatest festivals. Let us carry the refrain of the responsorial psalm
with us throughout the coming week:
“Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew
the face of the earth!” (Psalm 104:30).
