Update from the Executive Director
Dear Residents, Family Members & Employees,
CHEERS FOR A FULL YEAR OF ART SHOWS & WINE RECEPTIONS
You are all cordially invited to attend:
On Tuesday April 17th from 4-5pm we will be celebrating the success of our
first full year of the Avery Crossings art shows! This cocktail reception will be
highlighted by the acrylic painting works of local artist Ann Marie O’Dowd.
Last April 16th we celebrated our collaboration with the Newton Art
Association, kicking off the very first unavailing of the Avery Crossings art
shows. Since that first cocktail reception it was obvious, that are community
residents would warmly embrace this new art program. Over the past 12
months we have extended the art show to cover most of the third floor wall
space. This extension allowed us to maximize our ability to showcase original
artworks done by local artists. To date we have had roughly 20 different
community artists display their pieces in our home. From photographs to
pastels and who could not forget the Chinese Brush Painters, the variety of
different styles has been very refreshing each month. During the short few
days that overlap shows I find myself excited to see what will be exhibited
next and I wonder how we managed with walls bare prior to last April. I am
so very glad that Avery Crossings will be able to provide this program for a
second year in a row. I look forward to meeting many more local artists in
person and appreciating there work each month. I would like to give a very
special thank you to Elyse Golibroda for spearheading this program and of
course the Newton Art Association for making the art shows possible.
Finally, Special Thanks to the artists for allowing us to enjoy there works here

Food and Beverage Tid Bits
As Spring ushers in, it’s that time of the
year when the kitchen is in the process of
researching
and
planning
our
Spring/Summer menus. Our seasonal
theme menus have a centered inspiration
to help with the creative process. Our
inspiration for our lunch menus will come
from the world of gourmet salads. Our
gourmet salads will be healthy and
satisfying and many of them will have an
appropriate amount of protein. For our
dinner menu we will be inspired by
Catalan cuisine. Catalan cuisine is a
Mediterranean cuisine. Catalonia is a
region in the northeast section of Spain. It
relies heavily on ingredients found along
the Mediterranean. All of our most popular
and traditional dishes will always remain
part of the rotation. As always any ideas
or suggestions are appreciated.

Bright Acrylics by Ann Marie
O’Dowd
Tuesday, April 17
4:00 – 5:00 pm
Please join us to view the beautiful
paintings by Ann Marie O’Dowd. Ann
Marie is an experienced artist living in
the Greater Boston community who
specializes in bright acrylic depictions of
people, animals, and still lives on
canvas. After graduating from Mass Art
with a degree in photography, Ann
Marie took a hiatus from her artistic
career in order to raise her three
daughters. After returning to art, Ann
Marie shifted her focus from black and
white manual photography to acrylic
painting. Working from a large supply of
black and white photographs from her
past, Ann Marie began creating her own
colors and patterns to fill these vintage
photographs with new life. Over 15
years have passed since Ann Marie
began painting, and she is now a wellestablished artist with exhibits and
clients both local and abroad. From billy
goats to chihuahua’s, children to adults,
Ann Marie brings life to her paintings
through unique patterns and a bold and
lively palette, creating a telling portrait in
every work of art.

Wednesday, April 25 at 11:00 am
With a large collection of historical instruments including recorders, krumhorns, sackbuts, curtals,
viols, lutes, harps and harpsichords, the Early Music Ensemble explores the music and performance
practices of Western Europe in the Renaissance and early Baroque eras. The ensemble is made up
of singers and instrumentalists who explore the repertoires of 15th, 16th and 17th-century Europe,
from madrigals and dances to motets and fantasias. Spanish music in the Renaissance offered a rich
palette of strong emotions: passion, longing, fervor and jealousy seethed in the oppressive heat and
repressive climate. The Early Music Ensemble explores “the furthest shores of Spain,” where love,
lust and religious passion were often painted in the same feverish colors.
Newton Library: Koto and Flute Concert
Sunday, April 29 at 1:00 pm

The History of the Boston Marathon: The First Boston Marathon
After experiencing the spirit and majesty of the Olympic Marathon, B.A.A. member and inaugural US Olympic Team Manager John
Graham was inspired to organize and conduct a marathon in the Boston area. With the assistance of Boston businessman Herbert
H. Holton, various routes were considered, before a measured distance of 24.5 miles from Metcalf’s Mill in Ashland to the Irvington
Oval in Boston was eventually selected. On April 19, 1897, John J. McDermott of New York, emerged from a 15-member starting
field and captured the first B.A.A. Marathon in 2:55:10, and, in the process, forever secured his name in sports history.
In 1924, the B.A.A. moved the starting line from Ashland to Hopkinton. In 1927, the Boston Marathon course was
lengthened to the full distance of 26 miles, 385 yards to conform to Olympic standards. The Marathon Distance
The 1896 Olympic marathon distance of 24.8 miles was based on the distance run, according to famous Greek legend, in which the
Greek foot-soldier Pheidippides was sent from the plains of Marathon to Athens with the news of the astounding victory over a
superior Persian army. Exhausted as he approached the leaders of the City of Athens, he staggered and gasped, “Rejoice! We
Conquer!” and then collapsed.
The marathon distance was later changed as a result of the 1908 Olympic Games in London. That year, King Edward VII and
Queen Alexandria wanted the marathon race to begin at Windsor Castle outside the city so that the Royal family could view the
start. The distance between the castle and the Olympic Stadium in London proved to be 26 miles. Organizers added extra yards to
the finish around a track, 385 to be exact, so the runners would finish in front of the king and queen’s royal box. Every Olympic
marathon run since the 1908 Games has been a distance of 26 miles, 385 yards.
