The IKEA point of view is crystal clear – children are
the most important people in the world and home is
a great playground. Consequently, we’ve made it our
mission to make every kid’s personal space as playful as
themselves. It doesn’t matter if it’s their own room or a

In the past year, and as a result of new research and
discoveries, IKEA has learned that play is not only good
for children, but just as important for people of all ages.
“In our research we’ve seen that half of all adults want to
find their inner child and that both children and parents
want to play more together,” says Maria Thörn, Range
Manager at Children’s IKEA.

Playing is our children’s full-time job and a great way
to learn for life, whether it’s social behaviour, language,
empathy or risk management. Maria Thörn is a passionate
advocate for the greatness of playing, regardless of our

At times, when family life is stressful with long working

“I remember when my children were small and they

to get the action going. According to the extensive Play
Report that IKEA presented recently, nearly half of all
parents would like to play more with their children, but
a third feel they are too stressed to enjoy it. One out of
four even admit to finding it a bit boring.
Nicolas Cortolezzis, LATTJO product developer, knows
a great deal about the benefits of playing together,
“Play is a universal language, across borders, across
generations. Through play we connect with each other
and build relationships – while having fun at the same
time. And it’s just as important for adults as for children.
Research shows that the joy of doing something without
a specific purpose, like playing, releases stress and fuels
our creativity and imagination.”

MEET THE PLAYERS...
Lots of people played together to make LATTJO a reality.
Illustrators, designers, a design agency and a renowned
American play researcher all played their part.
The Stockholm-based illustrator duo Maja Sten and Tyra
von Zweigbergk were part of the early design process and
invented the world where all things LATTJO originates.
“It consists of three parallel worlds – the mysterious
underground, the magic garden and a castle – inhabited
by all kinds of fantastic creatures”, says Tyra.
The characters, inspired by insects, roots and vegetation,
pop up in different parts of the collection – like in the
jigsaw puzzle that has pieces in three different sizes to
be a challenge for both young and old.
“I think we did almost 100 versions of the image before
we were completely happy”, says Maja.
Before taking the visual ideas further by starting the actual
product design, the design team from IKEA met up with
American play researcher Dr. Stuart Brown who’s spent
most of his life studying play and the effect it has on all
of us.
“Plenty of play in childhood makes for happy, smart
adults – and keeping it up can make us smarter at any
age”, says Stuart, who among other things is the founder
of the National Institute for Play in the US (and who
works out of his office treehouse).

A large team of designers from different parts of the
world came together to realise LATTJO.
“We wanted to create a collection that triggers curiosity
and inspires adults and kids to start playing together,”
says Sigga Heimis, designer and part of the LATTJO team.
The products are made of natural materials, with attention
to detail and with a unique graphic identity.
“The LATTJO toys age with grace. They look great on the
shelf, or on the floor, and don’t need to be hidden away
in a cupboard when not played with. That way it’s much
easier to start playing again and again.”

FEEL THE RHYTHM
It doesn’t take drums to be a drummer, but a set of
drumsticks is a good place to start. Start a marching
band that gets its rhythm from pots and pans or impress
everyone by going solo on a cookie tin and a cupboard
door. Everyone can join in on whatever is most handy. If
it gets too loud, give your ears a break and change the
sound by switching to the brushes.

For normal-sized bubbles you can use a straw or some
other kind of tube. You can also make a loop of any size
using, say, a pipe cleaner, a twig or some steel wire.

> Washing-up liquids can vary a lot. Keep
trying and find the best combination of
water and washing-up liquid.
> The soapy water will be even better if you
leave it covered at room temperature for
a few hours before use.
> Rainwater contains no chalk so it works
better than tap water.
> Don’t blow bubbles indoors if you have
sensitive furniture or other stuff you want
to look after. Bursting bubbles can make
things wet and leave marks.
> Blow bubbles in the shade – direct sunlight
can burst them.

Glycerine
If you really want good, strong bubbles, add
two tablespoons of glycerine. Available from
chemists.
Mix well but carefully. The soapy water
shouldn’t be too foamy.
Pour the solution into a handy little pot.
BUBBLE FUN
> Blow bubbles in different temperatures and
weathers. Moisture is good, and blowing
bubbles in the rain is fun. Bubbles freeze in
the air and smash on the ground when it’s
below -25°C (so best not to use a wire
blower!).
> Blow giant bubbles by filling a big bowl or
inflatable paddling pool with soapy water
and making enormous bubbles with a hula
hoop. Cover the bottom of the container
with soapy water, carefully lay the hoop in
it, lift it out and catch the bubble.
> Dogs and cats love chasing bubbles, so let
them play too!
> How many bubbles can you burst with your
nose in a minute?

Hide and seek in the dark – turn the lights
off or wait till the sun goes down.
Sardines – only one person hides. As
each person finds them, they have to get
in the hiding place with them.
Hide and seek with a home base – choose
a home base, such as a tree. When the
seeker finds a hider, they both run back to
the home base to see who gets there first.
WHAT TO DO:
One of you is the seeker. Close your eyes
and count to 100 while the others run
and hide. The first person to be found
gets to be seeker the next time.
Never reveal your best hiding
places. And remember to turn
your phone off!
