PRESIDENT’S REPORT
We seem to be in that busy time of year again! The magpies are dive bombing our
cyclists, gardens are becoming rejuvenated and our thoughts are turning to longer
days and Term 4 and the end of another year of “Learning with Pleasure” at U3A
Redlands District.
We have just celebrated Seniors’ Week. Thank you to all our U3A Volunteers who
helped organize some wonderful events for us all to enjoy. First there was the
traditional Seniors’ walk, and then Monday saw some enthusiastic social golfers vying
for a trophy and prizes at our U3A Seniors Golf Day – thank you Randolph Story for
organizing such a fun day. Tuesday over 550 of our seniors were entertained at the
Redland Performing Art Centre to a Variety Showcase of local musical talent brought
together for one afternoon. Thank you to Mayor Karen Williams and RPAC for making
this free concert and scrumptious afternoon tea possible – and thank you to all our
performers and audience. We were keeping our brains active on Wednesday for U3A
Back to School with great speakers on a wide range of subjects covering futuristic
digital technology, the law and justice, Alzheimer’s, the Way of St.James and a history
of Islam. Our Ukulele group, GRUBS, performed at the shopping centre and we had a
U3A information table at Cleveland. What a week of celebration and, now, we have
Adult Learners’ Week from 1 – 8 September. We may have “retired from work” but
we have not “retired from life”.
Thank you also to ten of our cyclists who volunteered their time for Super Tuesday
Bike Count in the Redlands on 6 September between 7am and 9am with all monies
being donated to U3A Redlands. Thanks guys and girls.
On Friday 23 September we have the annual tutors and volunteers’ forum with lunch.
On Monday 28 November we will have our Annual General Meeting at the Donald
Simpson Community Centre commencing at 9.30am. Please make an effort to come
along and acknowledge all the volunteers who make U3A Redlands District a place for
lifelong learning and enjoyable recreational activities. After our meeting we can enjoy
a delicious morning tea generously provided by the Bendigo Community Bank,
Victoria Point. Attendance is free. Please also consider whether you or someone you
know can nominate for a position on the 2017 Management Committee – we will have
a couple of vacant seats ready for you.
We are always saddened to hear that someone we liked and admired is no longer in
our midst and I would like to acknowledge the sad passing recently of Don Stapleton.
Don had been a U3A member for many years, he also served many years on the
Management Committee and was Treasurer for 8 years. Over this time he formed
strong bonds with many of our members and with other community organisations in
the Redlands.

THE SENIORS GOLF DAY was a success this year with 24 players contesting a Single
Stableford event. U3A Golf wishes to thank Carbrook Golf club for their support in this

Here are a couple of facts about the 1500s:
Most people got married in June, because they took their yearly bath in May
and they still smelled pretty good by June. However, since they were starting to
smell, brides carried a bouquet of flowers to hide the body odour. Hence the
custom today of carrying a bouquet when getting married.

We have to stop
cutting down trees.
This is getting
serious.

The English Plural
If the plural of man is always called men,
Why shouldn't the plural of pan be called pen?
If I speak of my foot and show you my feet,
And I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet?
If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth,
Why shouldn't the plural of booth be called beeth?
Then one may be that, and there would be those,
Yet hat in the plural would never be hose,
And the plural of cat is cats, not cose.
We speak of a brother and also of brethren,
But though we say mother, we never say methren.
Then the masculine pronouns are he, his and him,
But imagine the feminine: she, shis and shim!
27
I have selected 4 of the 10 things I found listed as things which
will disappear in our lifetime
(well maybe - our children’s lifetime!!!!!)
The Post Office
Get ready to imagine a world without the post office. They are so deeply in
financial trouble there is probably no way to sustain it long term. Email, Fed Ex,
and UPS have just about wiped out the minimum revenue needed to keep the post
office alive. Most of your mail every day is junk mail and bills.
The Land Line Telephone
Unless you have a large family and make a lot of local calls, you don't need it
anymore.
Most people keep it simply because they've always had it. But you are paying
double charges for the extra service. All the cell phone companies will let you call
customers using the same cell provider for no charge against your minutes.
Joined Handwriting
Already gone in some schools who no longer teach "joined handwriting" because
nearly everything is done now on computers or keyboards of some type (pun not
intended)
Privacy
If there ever was a concept we can look back on nostalgically, it would be privacy.
It's gone. It's been gone for a long time anyway.. There are cameras on the
street, in most of the buildings, and even built into your computer and cell phone.
But you can be sure 24/7, "They" know who you are and where you are, right down
to the GPS coordinates, and the Google Street View. The TV show "Person of
Interest" isn't as far out as you may think. If you buy something, your habit is put
into a zillion profiles, and your ads will change to reflect those habits.. "They" will
try to get you to buy something else. Again and again.
All we will have left with, and can't be changed, are "Memories"
