Principal’s Update:
The first quarter grade reports will be mailed out this week. As I mentioned last week, some of
you will be pleasantly surprised and some will be frustrated with their student’s performance. If
you are unclear as to why your student received a grade, please start with your student first. Ask
some questions about how they think they did and why. Ask them to rate themselves honestly on
how much effort s/he is putting in and how that effort is reflected in the grade. Take a look at your
student’s grades in Powerschool. The grade you see is a clickable link to the gradebook. Check to
see what your student did or didn’t turn in and the grades on assessments.
The biggest difficulty students in middle school have is managing work flow. Struggling students
are often struggling because they are not completing work. If this is the case, please contact your
child’s teacher to see how you can all work together to find solutions to help your student. Many
classes are weighted heavily on assessments- students must be able to demonstrate their
understanding of a concept in order to pass the class. If your student is struggling on assessments,
it is important to work with your student and the teacher to identify why and to be sure your
student is taking advantage of the help the teachers are providing (attending in class, asking
questions, retaking exams, getting study tips, using study guides, and/or going in after school for
extra support).
Middle school is a time of increased independence, but it is also a crucial time for us to support
our students in developing good habits. Our kids benefit from parent support.
For those of you celebrating Halloween this weekend, please be safe out there. Remember to turn
your clocks back an hour this weekend and that there is no school on Friday, November 6th!

Around School:

Laguna Cross Country Team ends the season with a win! The Lancer Cross Country team finished their
season at Fairbanks Course at Cuesta College and took command winning the 7th grade girls category, the
7th grade boys category, and the 8th grade boys category. Our 8th grade girls brought home a second place
finish in this meet. It has been an outstanding year for our track and field. Thank you to coach David
Campa and all of the dedicated runners that made our season such a memorable one! The team will
celebrate the season this Monday night from 6:30-8pm in the MPR. Great job Lancers!


Red Ribbon Week: Students had a successful Red Ribbon week by participating in spirit days, door
decorating, and educational events. Students focused on being connected to one another and heard messages
of how to get help and where they can turn if they or their friends are having issues with depression, drugs,
or alcohol. Now is a great time to start these discussions with your student if you haven’t already, and to
continue these discussions if you have!

 Congratulations to the Laguna Lancers Girls Volleyball teams. Both 7th and 8th grade
teams had a very successful season with great playing and athleticism from our fine
athletes. Thank you to the players for representing our school so well and to all the
parents and fans who came out to cheer them on!
 Our school cafeteria continues to rock it- especially on Thursdays when they mix it up
with something special. Students this week were treated to a pizza extravaganza with
multiple types of homemade pizza and a Caesar’s salad for the side.
The Cafeteria staff entertained students and staff by dressing up for Halloween!
 The school yearbook staff is finishing up our
“selfie” contest this week. Many students have
submitted selfies taken around campus to be
published in the yearbook later this year.

performance at the fall concert on Wednesday.

Greta Schultz
Many people think that the backbone of a quality school district is comprised solely of hard-working teachers
and dedicated administrators. In reality, a district operates successfully with the help of countless individuals in
support roles - the clerical staff, the custodians, the bus drivers and the beloved cafeteria personnel. The San
Luis Coastal Unified School District community and the staff and students of San Luis Obispo High School are
rallying around one of their own, Greta Schultz , “a lunch lady” at the home of the Tigers.
“It’s impossible to not love Greta Schultz,” stated Max Teaford. “She brings warmth and love to our Cafeteria,”
chimed in Danny Bangian. Four months ago, Greta Schultz was diagnosed with two brain aneurysms. After
surgery, she developed Myasthenia Gravis, a neuromuscular disease which now inhibits her ability to eat, speak,
and walk.
Greta is currently facing unbelievably expensive medical bills that will not be covered by insurance. The
Associated Student Body (ASB) of San Luis Obispo High School has begun a campaign to raise funds to
support this woman who has individually impacted so many students at the school. Greta who is now a member
of the Tiger family, previously worked at Laguna Middle School. She was affectionately known for her
encouraging words, purple hair, compassion, stories of Harley rides, sense of humor, love for life, and insistence
on good manners. At the cafeteria line, she would not only remind students to dedicate themselves to their
studies, but to live with integrity and honesty.
