The Crisis

THESE are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in
this crisis, shrink from the service of their country; but he that stands by it now, deserves the love
and thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this
consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain
too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven
knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an
article as FREEDOM should not be highly rated. Britain, with an army to enforce her tyranny,
has declared that she has a right (not only to TAX) but "to BIND us in ALL CASES
WHATSOEVER" and if being bound in that manner, is not slavery, then is there not such a
thing as slavery upon earth. Even the expression is impious; for so unlimited a power can belong
only to God. 1
These powerful words were written during that horrible winter of 1776. While acknowledging the
terrible difficulties, Paine strove to encourage and give meaning to the common people, the foot
soldiers in this war. Today, it is not the British with her tyranny-enforcing army to tax us and to bind
us into slavery, it is those who choose to enslave us, take away our freedom, environment, health, and
well-being. It is those who choose to end the EPA, the Affordable Care Act, the equality of all citizens,
and the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. We are in a horrible winter like 1776.
Openly, those on the far right say “NO” to educating all our children, “NO” to healthcare, Social
Security, Medicare, immigration, equal pay, marriage equality and especially, “NO” to new taxes. We
are struggling with caring for those infected with Ebola, but we have no Surgeon General, because the
president’s choice, a brilliant and experienced medical person, can’t get confirmed by Congress. He
made an anti-gun statement and the NRA blocked the confirmation process. These same clowns are
now complaining because we lack direction and leadership in solving this critical healthcare problem.
Last week a federal judge wrote a 147-page decision striking down the Voter ID law in Texas
declaring it is an unconstitutional poll tax. Further stating the Voter ID law is clearly discriminatory,
disenfranchising especially African Americans and Hispanics in a state with a history of discrimination.
Attorney General Abbott made an appeal, immediately — effectively asking for a turn over of the
decision pronouncing it as an discriminatory and an unconstitutional poll tax. What did the Supreme
Court decide on the decision? They ruled the law would be in effect for this election cycle because
election officials couldn’t handle changing back to the election laws that we have followed since 2003.
Folks who have been out knocking on doors and talking to voters are reporting back that some voters
are so angry they are not going to vote. “Congress doesn’t get anything done, anyway.” “I don’t care,
it doesn’t do any good anyway.” Political pundits are yelling that midterm elections have a notoriously
low voter turnout.
Well, my summer, sunshine patriots, remember you get what you pay for — when you don’t vote, you
are effectively casting a vote for the radical right wingers who refuse to acknowledge climate change,
the equality of all persons in all endeavors, free and quality education, or life, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness for anyone but the rich and privileged. Paine said, “for so unlimited a power can belong
only to God.”

abbott wants what?
Gregg Abbott: Bad for Texas. Bad for Texans.

The Dallas Morning News has it wrong again. The editorial page endorsed Greg Abbott on October 17,
2014, while predicting Wendy Davis as Governor would be too divisive, another way of saying the
Republicans know best and should have their way. Having Republicans in the Governor’s office, in
control of the House, and in control of the Senate works so well when Rick Perry and his friends want to
tramp all over the education system, women, the uninsured, the unemployed, those making minimum
wage, and immigrants trying to earn a living.
Greg Abbott’s stellar record as attorney general of Texas includes such accomplishments as:
Defending the sanctity of the ballot box by prosecuting four senior citizens for failing to sign the
envelopes when they mailed ballots for other seniors the same year he ignored 10,610 mail-in
ballots sent to the Republican Polk County, Rainbow’s End RV park which has 130 lots.
While bragging about transparency in Texas government, he blocked access to documents related
to the distribution of $550 million to Rick Perry contributors from the Texas Enterprise Fund.
Blocked Texans from knowing what hazardous chemicals are stored near their homes.
As a judge, refused to let rape victims to sue their perpetrators.
Filed more than 30 lawsuits claiming the federal government has infringed on the state’s rights.
Stated publicly: “I go into the office in the morning, I sue Obama, and then I go home.”
Defended the $5.4 billion cut to education funds the court has ruled unconstitutional.

Wants to end Obamacare in Texas even though Texas leads the nation in uninsured people
including uninsured children.
Wants to ignore Texans’ health and rein in the EPA, and claims he has protected Texas air and
water.
Opposes abortion even in cases of rape, incest, or when the life of the mother is in danger.
Wants to “unleash oil and gas companies” that can currently draw a line on a piece of paper and
take private property through eminent domain. He claims oil companies and fracking are wellregulated now in spite of conclusive evidence they have contaminated water wells and caused
earthquakes.
Wants a Pre-K program that requires providers “to set benchmarks and evaluate improvement,
and to report this data to TEA.” In other words they must TEST pre-K children as Wendy claims.

Wants to create Math Achievement Academies to “train K-3 teachers in numeracy instruction and
technology.”
Wants to “develop a strategic plan to encourage parents of eligible 4 year-old children to enroll in
state-based pre-kindergarten programs, rather than Head Start.” (Considering the incompetence
of the Texas Board of Education, do we want a group of the Governor’s appointees directing Pre-K
and K education?)
Bill White was ahead of the times when he accused Rick Perry as being in it for Rick. Greg Abbott is in it
for Greg and no one else.

Proposition 1 on the Texas November 4, 2014, Ballot

Proposition 1 proposes to amend the Texas Constitution.
Proposition 1 “The constitutional amendment providing for the use and dedication
of certain money transferred to the state highway fund to assist in the completion
of transportation construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation projects, not to
include toll roads.”
The phrase “certain money” refers to tax receipts from the oil and gas companies. Currently the
comptroller transfers 75 percent of the oil and gas tax receipts exceeding a certain threshold level set in
1987 into the Economic Stabilization Fund (ESF) commonly referred to as the rainy day fund and 25
percent into the general revenue bucket. House Bill (HB1), the legislation to be approved or
disapproved by Proposition 1, creates a 10-person commission to determine the appropriate amount of
money to be maintained in the rainy day fund. That amount will be reviewed every two years and
approved by the legislature. The commission will receive input from the comptroller, the history of the
fund, and a variety of other sources. Once the appropriate level for the rainy day fund is established and
both houses of the legislature have approved the amount, the comptroller will be directed to place a
portion or all of the revenue from the oil and gas industry into the rainy day fund and a portion into
transportation. All or none of the oil and tax receipts could go into either fund.

In 2012, the American Road and Transportation Builders Association estimated the cost of new four-lane
highway between $4 and $6 million per mile in rural areas and between $8 and $10 million per mile in
urban areas. They estimate the cost to resurface a four-lane highway at $1.25 million per mile.

The wording of the proposition is such that “certain money” could mean something entirely different a
month from now than it does today. There is a reason they used that phrase instead of more distinct
wording. It is good spending the money for toll roads is prohibited. There is no doubt traffic congestion
will only get worse and bridges will continue to crumble. With or without improvements in the roadways,
public transportation should be encouraged. Whether you vote for or against the proposal depends upon
how much you trust the Texas state government to keep their word.
I’m voting YES so they can’t waste the money suing the federal government.

Sequester? Homeland Security?
Kryptonite? What’s wrong with the Secret Service?

with his own body President and Mrs. Kennedy has been the
image which has justified for more than 40 years my awe of
Secret Service men. Everything I had been told about the
Secret Service was confirmed. It was an elite force of selfless
and highly skilled patriots — willing to take a bullet for the
good of the country.
Recent Secret Service doings indicate our elite force of highly
skilled patriots has some rot.

On November 11, 2011, a Secret Service supervisor told officers
investigating gunfire at the White House, “No shots have been
fired. Stand down.” Four days later, after a housekeeper
spotted broken cement and glass, officers discovered multiple
bullets hit the White House. Seven bullets struck the upstairs
family living quarters.
In 2012, eight agents were fired for doing business with prostitutes while on a trip in Cartagena, Columbia,
to provide security for President Obama’s attendance at a summit meeting.
In 2013, two agents were fired for sending sexually inappropriate emails to a colleague. The emails were
discovered when one of the agents tried to forcefully enter a women’s hotel room to recover a forgotten
bullet.
In early 2014, three agents were sent home from the Netherlands for getting drunk the night before the
president’s arrival.
On September 29, 2014, a man armed with a knife jumped the fence, overpowered a female Secret Service
agent, ran through the unlocked White House front door, and through the East Room before being
stopped by an off-duty officer.
So what’s wrong with the Secret Service? Pick the one that sounds good to you.
Julia Pierson, director of the Secret Service, told a Congressional hearing the
Secret Service, is understaffed by 550 employees due to the sequester.
The Secret Service was created as part of the Treasury Department in 1865 to
investigate and prosecute counterfeiters. It still does that and does the same for
cyber crime and other financial crimes.

The agency was moved to Homeland Security in 2002 with significant parts of
22 different federal agencies. Consequently, there is fight for a share of the
Homeland funds.
Rep. Frank Wolf (R) of Virginia, who is retiring after 17 terms in Congress and
has been a longtime advocate for federal workers, told The Washington Post,
federal employee “morale is probably at the lowest point I’ve seen it.”

So, do you know what’s wrong with the Secret Service? If so, think about this?
Wolf also said, “Federal workers impact all our lives. If you have concerns about flying into the local
airport, it’s your air traffic controller who is bringing you in safely. If you’re worried about an outbreak of
a disease, it’s the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Who is fighting forest fires near a national
park? Federal employees.”

Essential Information ABOUT EBOLA
The Truth Will Set Us Free.
The general public is whipped up good about the current healthcare state of affairs. Dallas County Judge
Clay Jenkins, without donning hazmat gear, visited the family of the one person to die of Ebola. What
happened? His little girl was harassed at the John S. Armstrong Elementary School (HPISD) by adults and
children. This morning, during a report on MSNBC, Judge Jenkins reported there was no need to shun
the survivors and folks with connections to the incident. Continually, the general public has been advised
of the minuscule risk of contagion (one must come in direct contact with infected bodily fluids and have
them enter the body via an open sore, or bodily orifice like the mouth, eyes, nose, etc.). The Republicans
and much of the media have promoted the atmosphere of crisis fear and trembling. The absentee
Congress has done nothing to calm the masses.
Here are some current statistics of causes of death in the United States:
35,200 people killed by cars in 2013
12,000 people killed by guns in 2013
40,000 people killed by self-inflicted means (suicide) in 2013
596,577 people killed (die) from heart disease each year
576,691 people killed (die) from cancer each year
128,932 people killed (die) from stroke (cerebrovascular disease) each year
126, 438 people killed (die) from accidents (unintentional injuries) each year
53.826 people killed (die) from heart disease each year
6,717 people killed (troops) in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan (57, 614 wounded)
82,805 veterans killed themselves (suicide since the beginning of the Middle East Wars)
11,766 women killed (die) from domestic violence in 2013
Preventing mortality in the general public:
Stay out of cars. Use public transportation.
Stay away from guns; have reasonable gun safety laws.
Develop a healthy life style of proper nutrition and exercise.
Support the Affordable Care Act.
See your healthcare provider especially for preventative care (i.e. get a flu shot).
End involvement in war.
Confirm and install a Surgeon General.
Arrest and prosecute offenders.
Wash hands frequently, always after using the toilet.
Ebola in Texas:
1 death from Ebola.
3 infected with the virus.
Viral load of infected person greatest near the end of life.
43 quarantined persons have been released — no chance of sickness or
spreading the virus.
Healthcare worker on cruise ship isolated and monitored; 4,600 other
passengers virus free.
Preventing infection in the general public:
Wash hands frequently, always after using the toilet.
No physical contact with infected persons.

with local, Texas, and federal CDC experts, the facts regarding the Ebola virus,
including how it is transmitted, which helped to quiet the anxiety and fear within the
Dallas County community;
WHEREAS the Honorable Dallas County Judge Clay Jenkins, by his calm and
measured actions of support for the non-symptomatic family members of the Ebola
victim, by securing suitable accommodations, and when informed of the victim’s
death, making a personal visit, along with the Pastor of the victim’s family church,
advising of said death, and offering sympathy and condolences on behalf of himself
personally and of Dallas County, has demonstrated a kind-hearted humanitarian
spirit.
It is hereby RESOLVED that the Garland Area Democratic Club honors Dallas

Hispanic 100 Honors Sheriff Lupe Valdez as Living Legend
Recently, the Hispanic 100 honored Sheriff Lupe Valdez with their
annual Latina Living Legend Award. Upon learning of the award,
she said, “I’m sure glad it’s the living legend,” she joked.
The sheriff continued stating she is guided in office by some simple
rules, such as doing the right thing and treating people well. “Do
the right thing, “Even when people are criticizing you, don’t go out
for revenge. Leave it alone.” Her final word for those who ask her
to go after people who have wronged them is, “Jail is a place for
people we’re afraid of, not people we’re mad at.”
Thank you, Sheriff Valdez, for your continued great work in
service to the people of Dallas County.

on Fire
An ad posted on Facebook recently was so
full of lies we are breaking a policy of
ignoring junk and letting our readers know
the truth.
The Sheets ad stated that at the Honors
Academy charter school system, where
Carol Donovan once served as a board
member, an attempt was made to revoke its
charter, despite the fact that the systemhad
received high ratings for its schools.
Honors Academy filed a lawsuit in which it
argued the revocation attempt was in
violation of state law and the Academy was
in compliance with all applicable agency
rules.
The federal district court agreed with
Honors Academy and granted a permanent
injunction against the revocation attempt.
The appeal of this matter is still pending,
and all Honors Academy schools are fully
operating.
Kenneth Sheets is an attorney. He is well
aware that the case is on appeal, and no
final judgment has been rendered.
Nevertheless, he continues to misrepresent
the facts of this case. Sheets has stated
publicly that he supports charter schools.
Starve a Cold —
Feed the Conservatives
Ever since it became an essential part of the conservative
mantra that government employees are too dumb to come
out of a rain — remember the Reagan-era meme: “The
seven most feared words in America: I’m from the
government here to help” — Congressional conservatives
have tried to starve agencies of adequate funding and
denigrate their expertise and abilities at every turn.
But they have over-promised what the private sector
would do. There is no profit-center in training and
equipping nurses to care for Ebola patients so we have one
of Dallas’ major medical centers totally unprepared to care
for such a patient. And now there are two more! Let’s
hope and pray no more.
Conservatives have been telling us for the last 40 years that
the profit motive is all we need for a fully functional
society. Well, we are seeing how that philosophy works in
the real world of deadly viruses at Presbyterian and at the
CDC! By its budgeting priorities, conservatives in
Congress set these institutions up to fail and then, when
they fail, charge they have “ruined the public trust.” No
wonder three times more people think Obama more
capable of running the country than Congress.

Do not forget Sandy Hook. If 9/11 is the symbol of all that is associated
with terrorism, so should Sandy Hook be the symbol of all that is
associated with our refusal to deal with guns in the same way we deal
with all other threats to our society.
