Examples from G6 Students regarding answers to our Team
Games Central Idea
“Success in games depends on skills, rules, strategies and sportsmanship.”
Q: What does sportsmanship mean to you/look like to
you? Give some examples.
A: I think sportsmanship means cooperating with people from
your team. You work together, communicate and encourage. If
someone on your team misses a pass, or accidentally scores an
own goal, don’t complain loudly (“How could yo-ou! That was SO
easy!”)Instead, say, “Keep trying!” But you also need to respect
your opponents. When you win, you don’t jump around and cheer
in their faces. You walk up to them shake hands, and say, “Good
game.” Your opponents are one of the main reasons for your
team’s success. They help you learn from your mistakes, and
push you to something even higher than you thought you could
go.
To me sportsmanship looks like teammates working together, no
fighting and hogging the ball. After a game you should always shake hands
with the person and don’t always feel bad about losing. To show
sportsmanship you have to shake/high five the person’s hand.
Sportsmanship to me is cooperation, teamwork and just helping
each other out on the field. For example, if someone passed to someone else
on his or her team and yelled “You can do it! Score a goal!” that would be
sportsmanship to me because they were cooperating on the field and
passing to one another in order to help their team. Also, after a game, if the
two teams hi-five or congratulate each other, that would be sportsmanship
too because no only are they communicating to their own team, but with
others as well.
Sportsmanship is when you play a sport by following the rules of it.
Cheating is not an example of sportsmanship. Sportsmanship is also when you
are positive to your teammates even when they fail to complete something or
miss a shot. In that case instead of saying, “come on Bob that was terrible”, you
can encourage him and say “nice try Bob!” or something that doesn’t hurt
anyone’s feelings.
To me, sportsmanship means playing fair obeying the rules of a game.
Sportsmanship is when, a team plays well and cooperates together. For example,
when you lose a game of a sport, you should go up to the other team and
congratulate and thanks the opposing team. Sportsmanship is also teamwork,
working together and supporting each other. Another example is when a friend or
a team mate is about to shoot a goal, you can give some supporting words such
as: You can do it!, or Good luck!. That would be sportsmanship to because they
are working together and supporting one another.
Following the rules of a game is really important. You can learn more
about a game by actually understanding the rules and concepts. Also, following
the rules of a game allows you to get better at a sport and actually play a sport
because if you don’t play by the rules of a game properly, you might
get disqualified. I have some personal experience on this matter because in
basketball and football matches I’ve played before, they have specific rules and
you aren’t allowed to knock people over or it might be a foul. In handball, you
can’t have contact, and if you have contact it would be a hand over so the other
team would have the ball, which isn’t a good thing.
It is very important to follow the rules of games because if you do not
follow the rules, you could get hurt or instead hurt someone else. With rules, you
can enjoy the game more and also have more fun since you know that it would be
safer. It is also very important to follow rules of the games because if you do not,
you won’t have a fair match. If you follow the rules, other team mates or the
opposing team will not keep annoying you about how you were cheating.
To me sportsmanship is a key element in a team. When most people
think of sportsmanship they think of following the rules and being
supportive of other team members, but the truth is it is much more. When I
think of sportsmanship I think of helping your team and getting out there,
even if you’re not necessarily strong in that sport! Sportsmanship is about
being part of a team, and helping to make sure your team is doing as well
as it possibly can. It is also about giving other people chances, even if they
miss the goal.
Q: Why are good team strategies important to success in
team games? Give examples of strategies for team
handball? How would you create and/or deny space in
team handball?
A: Team strategies are important because you need to know
what your teammates are doing and thinking. If everyone just
played their own game, even if they were on the same team,
then the whole game would fall into disarray.
You create space by not bunching up, getting open and moving
around. You can also dodge around your defender to get free.
You deny space by guarding a player, if allowed, putting your
arms up to catch or intercept a ball. If the player you are
guarding has the ball and there is a time limit, (as in handball)
you can crowd around that player, or count to pressure them into
misdirecting their shot.
In my handball team, one of our strategies was to have certain
people ‘stationed’ around or near the goal; team members would
then pass to those people and hopefully score. To have a more
likely chance of scoring, the scorers feinted one way then scored
when the goal was open. When the ball was in the possession of
the other team, we usually guarded a player of the opposing
team and quite a few times intercepted the ball.
Team strategies are important because they are your plan that you run
with and take action with. It also is important because with team strategies,
everyone knows what to do, how to do it, who to pass to, who to mark, and how to
beat the opposing team. That way, there’s no confusion and it’s very simple to
score or win the match. One good strategy for any game really, is to spread out
along the field first, and then pass to one another until you reach the goal, and
there you can score. If the players mark you and deny space, then you move
closer to your team player and pass the ball to them and the sequence continues
as you try to move closer to the goal. One handball strategy is to pass the ball
across the field to different people and move according to how the game is going.
The person nearest to the goal shoots and tries to score. You create space by
moving around and away from other people, as well as running in a different
direction or turning around to an unoccupied space where you can then move
into. You deny space by pushing up against the opposing player, or marking them,
and surrounding them so that they can’t find space to pass or score.
Strategies are crucial in many team sports. They allow players the ability to
outsmart enemy players and go for the game objective. Some good strategies in team
games and handball can be passing consistently to your team mates because it would
be harder for the other team players to intercept the ball. Some good shooting
strategies are faking shots at a goalie so when the goalie moves to the direction you
faked shooting and you would have a clear shot at the goal. In team handball, we can
create space by moving into open areas so receiving passes would be easier. We can
also deny space by marking an open player or the ball handler so it would be harder
for them to maneuver and the ball handler would have a chance of a 3-second over
time.
Good team strategies are important to success in team games because everyone
will understand and know how to do what they have to do, what to do, who to pass to,
who to block the ball from, and how to win against the opposing team. If we have good
team strategies, there will not be many confusions and it is also very simple to score or
win the match. One good strategy for any game is to spread out across the field, and then
pass to your other teammates until you reach the goal, and then you can score a
successful goal. If the players block you and deny space, then you should move closer to
your team and pass the ball to whoever is closer to you. A “Hand Ball” strategy is to pass
the ball across the vast field or gym to different people in your group and move towards
the goalie. The person nearest to the goal shoots and will try to score. You create space by
moving around into an area where there is not a lot or no defense and go there and ask
other to pass the ball to you. You deny space by moving into an area where the player is
either passing or passing to and try to block the ball from being pass to them, being
scored into the goal or being thrown to. You can also deny space by pushing up against
the opposing player and surrounding them so that they can’t find space to pass or score.
Q: What is a strategy you/your team used in “Capture the
Flag” to be more successful?
A: A certain group of people focused on attack, there were four
or five people guarding the ‘flags’, a couple who specialized in
jail-breaking and the remaining people acted as a sort of patrol
guard.
A capture the flag strategy would be different. A capture the flag
strategy could be where a little less than three quarters of the team stay on
defense (for tagging runners who try to steal the ball or people who defend
the jail) or as people to save others from jail if they get caught, while the
rest run and try to “capture the flag”.
An effective strategy my team used in capture the flag was sending a
decoy striker and a real striker after the decoy draws the opponent defenders
away. The decoy takes away most of the enemy defenders, leaving the real
striker a clear shot for the flag. I find this a really common strategy as many
teams use it, but it is very effective.
A strategy that we sometimes use in capture the flag is to fake running across but
instead wait for the other team to run across. We sometimes wait until they run and then
we tag them and send them to jail. Eventually when there are a couple of people in jail,
more people try and save the people in jail. When they do this we tag them. We do this
until their team is diminished to about 4-5 people. Then a couple of people run for the
balls and save people if anyone on our team is in jail. This is not ideal because sometimes
there is a jailbreak when we are trying to keep them in jail. The jailbreak makes us restart
and is very frustrating.
Q: Describe why having strong skills helps your team be more
successful? Give some examples of skills with a specific team
sport in mind.
A: Having strong skills are important because otherwise your team will
be weak; the purpose of game (to have fun and improve your skills)
will be misused, and the game itself will go at a very slow pace.
In netball it is important to be good at the following skills: defending,
intercepting, creating space and shooting. If you and your teammates
are bunched up there is no way you are going to get the ball down the
court and away from the defenders; to get into the goal circle and
shoot at the hoop. If you are defending, you need to remember to be
three feet apart (otherwise it’s a foul) and get ready to intercept the
ball from the attackers. And if you do actually get the ball and you are
in a position to shoot (GA/GS) you need to have shooting skills
otherwise there will be no goals at all.
Having strong skills are important because with these skills you can
specialize at scoring goals, staying on defense or passing to one another.
Also, if you have strong skills then it’s easier to devise a strategy where
you can contribute your skills and win the match. However, if you don’t
have good skills, then you are most likely to lose the match because you
haven’t practiced or couldn’t contribute anything to the game.
In Capture the Flag it is important to be good at the following skills:
Running (for obvious reasons)
Stealth (if you’re trying to steal the flag, it’s best to be stealthy because
other people don’t notice you as much)
Alert (if you’re on defense, it’s best to be alert in case anybody tries to
sneak in to your side of the field)
Having strong skills are important because they allow you to be more
advanced in game techniques, which allows you to be a hard player to beat.
There are many different skills in different sports. Some examples are: In
soccer, you need to be flexible and alert to be a goalie and block shots taken by
your opponents. In basketball, you need to have dribbling skills to make it
harder for opponents to steal your ball away.
Having good skills is very important. I think this because if someone is very good
at shooting then that team has an advantage. This is because if he/she can shoot well
then they are more likely to score more goals. Many people are good at different skills
such as, passing, catching, shooting, feinting and a couple others. This gives different
teams diverse advantages. In handball it is important to have a good passer. This is
because if someone can pass well the ball can maybe be thrown farther or more
accurately than usual. Also, in handball you can only have the ball for 3 seconds and if
someone can pass quickly that is good.
Q: Why does a team that is very physically fit have an
advantage over a team that is not fit?
A: The team that is physically fit has advantages because they
have the ability to move around the court faster, and if their
brains are also fit they can think of new strategies and ways to
score.
The team that is physically fit has an advantage because they can tower
over the weaker team and take the opportunities to score (Opportunities such as
skills, power, stamina and accuracy). The weaker team will not have these
advantages, and will not be able to score any goals or win the match if the
stronger team can beat them easily at all of these. Also, the unfit team will run out
of energy perhaps halfway through the game because they don’t have the
endurance to keep going, letting the stronger team have even more chances at
winning the match.
