Part I: Essay (approximately three hours):
Please answer one of the two following questions:
1. Write an essay about Munch’s representations of femininity and masculinity. Include an analysis
of the following works as part of your discussion: Madonna (1893/94), Vampire (1893), SelfPortrait with Cigarette (1895) and Bathing Men (1907).
2. Write an analysis of Munch’s The Sick Girl (1885/86). Why was this painting so important to
Munch? Discuss the painting’s content (motif, subject matter), style (naturalism, symbolism) and
form (technique). Discuss what Bjerke means when he writes that Munch is using “style and
technique as strategic device.”

Please answer four of the seven following questions:
1. What is understood by Edvard Munch's so-called “horse-cure/kill-or-cure treatment”?
2. Edvard Munch excelled in the art of printmaking. What were the three techniques he used and
why is he looked upon as an important and original printmaker?
3. What is understood by the notion Frieze of Life?
4. What was Munch’s most important monumental project? Describe the three main images from
this project.
5. What is understood by “Pultosten”?
6. What is understood by Patricia Berman’s concept “the urban sublime“?
7. Picture identification: which picture is this (title, date (circa), and medium)? Please, also include
a short analysis of it.
