PRESIDENT’S DESK
Summer is finally here, and so is the heat.
But high temperatures did not keep us
inside for the Montclair Assisted Living
Center in south Shreveport June 20th.
The heat was on, but over 28 cars came
out to show off their stuff for the Residents. We had 5 Club cars come out, 3 of
them were classic cars, which most of the
residents could identify with. There were
also several other makes and models of
cars from the 50s through the present.
Mopar was also there with classics as well
as late model cars.
Lloyd Overstreet came out in his brand
spankin new Sublime Green Hellcat that
he just picked up the previous Monday.
He already had a nice striping kit put on it,
but hadn't had a chance to read the owner’s manual yet. Like the Boss 302 Mustangs, the track key for his car won’t kick
in the full 707 horsepower until he reaches 500 miles on the speedo, so until then
he has to live with the 505 horses. The
engine bay was real clean and quite menacing with that big blower case on top of
the engine. My favorite feature was the 2
built in beer can holders over each headlight in the engine bay so you could set
your beer in a secure place while working
on the car. Lloyd says those are where
you set your beer when you are admiring the engine. He has a
100,000 mile power train warranty.
Even though it was too hot and humid to stay out in the direct sun for
too long, there were several residents, along with spectators milling
around all afternoon to check out
the cars. There were free drinks to
cool you down, and all participating
vehicles got a different bottle of gator detailer as a door prize. Thanks
to all who came out, specifically the guys
with the classic cars, which were the most
popular cars of the show.
Afterwards, we left Montclair, and met up
at Sonic Drive-in on East Texas in Bossier
City. I couldn't deal with the heat anymore, and got Mark Winderweedle and
Steve Risner to go with me over to Chili's
to get some dinner in the air conditioning.
Once we were done, we walked back to
Sonic to meet the Lanes. It was 6:30 by
then, and no one else was at Sonic other
than a street rod, so we decided to go
check out the old Colliers on Youree Drive.
We got there and found about 25 different
cars there hanging out. We parked and
walked around for a while checking out
who was there. By 7:30 several people
had left, obviously a long day for most of
them, so we bugged out as well. Both the
Sonic cruise-in and the old Colliers cruisein are trying to come back on the 3rd Saturday of every month. Mopar is trying to
grow the Sonic cruise, and the Street Rod
Association the old Colliers cruise. I guess
next month, I will have to go to both to see
who goes where.

MCA NEWS
Hope all have survived the flooding. I think our yard
turned into a forest before we finally got to mow it. I recently came back from OK from seeing family and also
attending the Mid-America Ford and Shelby meet. The
flooding was all over. In Tulsa the Arkansas River was
extremely high. In case you might be asking, no the
Shelby did not come with me. My daughter Ala came
along for the ride along with dog Zia. She was in a dog
show while we were there. No dog will go in the Shelby.
Besides she's way too big. The truck went.
While my main purpose of my trip was to see family, I
received a call from our MCA president asking me to
consider coming up and help George Valari with the
membership booth. On Saturday we were at the drag
strip and thank God for the wind. It was really hot and
sticky out there. While I was there I was asked if I went
to that particular track when I was growing up there. I
told them that when I was in school the only drag strip
we had was downtown main street and back roads. Boy
things have really changed. No, I'm not that old. The
marketing guys were there getting some footage of all
the events, so keep checking the MCA website for some
good updates.
On the last day of the Shelby and Ford meet there was a
car show. Ala, Zia, and I stopped by on our way out of
town to go home. Needless to say Zia was a big hit with
everyone. George Valari even made her and honorary
MCA member. He even gave her a shirt. George never
gives away his shirts for free so I was really honored that
he did so. Donald Farr from the Mustang Times was
there and he took pictures of her. Hopefully we'll see
her in the news for August.
Don't forget to check your membership card and make
sure you renew your MCA dues. You don't want to be left
out. Also please start getting your door prizes in for our
show in September. It'll be here before we know it.
See you on the road.
