Touring the Lockstations Kingston Mills Locks No. 46 - 49 Paddling Routes Kingston to Kingston Mills Lockstations Lockstations & & Route Route No. No. The route takes us from the Inner Harbour of Kingston the original Capital of Canada and past the La Salle Bridge which marks the start of the Rideau Canal Waterway. It is noted on the navigation charts that boaters should pay close attention to the marked channel and stay within the navigation channel as shown by the buoys. Kingston Mills makes another interesting stop to take in the blockhouse and the Robert Anglin Visitor’s Centre. The roar of a train signals the fact that the main rail line between Montreal and Toronto crosses the locks at this point. The site today features a lovely set of three locks, a turning basin, a detached upper lock and the Parks Canada operated Robert Anglin Visitor’s Centre. The main CN rail line crosses over the lower locks on a bridge originally built for the Grand Trunk Railroad in 1853 (rebuilt in 1890 and 1924). One of the four blockhouses on the Rideau is located here. It’s open during the summer months, with the inside outfitted as soldier’s barracks. The falls, first used to power mills, still generate power today. A small hydro-electric station was built here in 1913. Special Notes: To ensure passage, boaters must arrive at least 2 hours prior to closing. Swing bridge with a clearance of 2.3m (7.5 ft). Bridge swings on demand. Paddling Routes 1 -12 Map Legend The Rideau Canal is part of a Canada-wide family of special places. Each national park, national historic site and canal, and marine conservation area in the Parks Canada family tells its own story. Historic canals trace the routes of exploration, defence, commerce and transportation which helped shape Canada as a young nation. Paddlers have the option to follow the route from either Kingston – Ottawa OR Ottawa – Kingston. If travelling from Ottawa to Kingston, please start from route 12 and work through to route 1. www.RideauHeritageRoute.ca I [email protected] I Phone/Fax: 613-389-4783 Touring the Lockstations Kingston Mills Locks No. 46 - 49 Paddling Routes Detailed Map Listings Hogs Hogs Back Back Hartwells Hartwells Route Route 12 12 Route Route 12 12 Ottawa Ottawa Route Route 12 12 Paddling Routes 1 -12 Map Legend Po itu Lo ng Co Ic on de Fe at ur e ap Upper Brewers Routes 1 & 2 Upper Brewers Routes 1 & 2 Jones Falls Routes 2 & 3 Jones Falls Routes 2 & 3 Davis Route 3 Davis Route 3 Chaffeys Route 3 Chaffeys Route 3 Newboro Routes 3, 4 & 5 Newboro Routes 3, 4 & 5 Narrows Routes 4 & 5 Narrows Routes 4 & 5 Colonel By Island Route 5 Colonel By Island Route 5 Upper Beveridges Route 6 Beveridges Route 6 Lower Beveridges Route 6 Poonamalie Route 7 Poonamalie Route 7 Smiths Falls Route 7 Smiths Falls Route 7 Detached Detached Smiths Falls Routes 7 & 8 Smiths Falls Routes 7 & 8 Combined Combined Old Slys Route 8 Old Slys Route 8 Edmonds Route 8 Edmonds Route 8 Kilmarnock Route 8 Kilmarnock Route 8 Merrickville Routes 8 & 9 Merrickville Routes 8 & 9 Clowes Route 9 Clowes Route 9 Upper Nicholsons Route 9 Upper Nicholsons Route 9 Lower Nicholsons Route 9 Lower Nicholsons Route 9 Burritts Rapids Route 9 Burritts Rapids Route 9 Long Island Routes 11 & 12 Long Island Routes 11 & 12 Black Route Black Rapids Rapids Route 12 12 rt Tr age ai l L or e H La ngt ikin h g tit ud e Route Route 11 Route Route 11 M Kingston Kingston Mills Mills Lower Lower Brewers Brewers de Lockstations Lockstations & & Route Route No. No. 355 m 44°17’31.63”N 76°26’31.86”W (1166 ft) Description: The portage route follows an access road that travels along the edge of the locks.
