FlashLine for Dual Enrollment Students

FlashLine for Dual Enrollment Students
Introduction
If you are a current dual enrollment student and you did not receive a letter showing your user name and how to create a
password for your account, please notify one of the PSEOP staff by phone or email. You can find the information on our
contact page.
If you have received the letter, you must create a temporary password by following the instructions on the letter.
Once you have created your own password, then you will be able to log on. If you are having trouble, please contact the
Helpdesk at 330-672-HELP.
Logging In
There are three ways that you can log in to your FlashLine account. You can go to www.kent.edu, and click on FlashLine
login, which you will find on the top right corner of the page. Once the login window pops up, then you can enter your user
name and password. Please note that your user name is your email address minus the “@kent.edu”. For example, if my
email address is [email protected], then my user name is jane123.
The second option to log in to your FlashLine account is by going to http://flashline.kent.edu, adn the third option is to go
to http://login.kent.edu. You will need to enter your user name and password as mentioned before.
Please note that when logging on using the kent.edu site, you have to use the three w’s, http://www.kent.edu. When using
the flashline.kent.edu site, you do not use the three w’s. Just type in http://flashline.kent.edu.
Also, please set up your account immediately. We will be contacting you mainly through your Kent email address. Check
your email on a regular basis.
Once you are logged on, you will notice different tabs across the top of the page. The main focus of the rest of this tutorial
will be on the “My Account” and “Student Tools & Courses” tabs.
Student Tools and Courses
On the Student Tools and Courses tab, under the “Registration and Class Tools” box, you will find information about
classes. Here, you will be able to log on to Vista, register for classes, drop classes and see what classes for which you
are currently registered.
The first link that you will see is the Vista single sign on. This is the link that many, but not all of your instructors will use to
post things such as your syllabus, notes, power points, grades and any other material that you will need and use for class.
For example, if you missed class, you can log on to Vista and print out the power points that your instructor may have
used for the lecture for that day.
When you click on a link for one of your current classes, you will see that your instructor may use Vista quite frequently
to communicate with the class. You can find your course information, chat in a discussion board, and look at your grades
and class announcements, just to name a few.
Another way to access Vista, is by simply clicking on the icon next to the email icon on the top right of the FlashLine page.
Not all instructors use this tool; therefore, ask him/her questions to whether or not this will be useful.
When you click on add/drop classes under the registration and class tools box, you will see a “Payment Acknowledge”
page. This page is just to inform you about verifying your student account and billing information, and acknowledging the
due dates of tuition and other school payments. Click “I Acknowledge”.
Select the term for which you want to change.
The add/drop classes page will then come up. If you scroll down, you will see the list of current classes for which you are
registered. You will also see the number of credit hours that you are currently taking. Under the column “action” you will
notice a drop down box next to each course. When you click the down arrow on that box, you will see the option “web
drop”. This is how you drop a course. Click web drop next to the course you would like to drop, scroll down, and click on
submit changes, and your schedule is now changed.
If you scroll down to the bottom of the add/drop classes page, you will see class search. This is where you will search for
the courses you would like to register for. After clicking on class search, you will see that you can search for many courses
in different ways. The most common way to look up a course is by selecting the subject it’s under, selecting the campus
where it’s located, selecting the course level, which for you would be undergrad, and clicking class search.
After clicking class search, a list of courses offered based under your search will be displayed. Under the column “select”
you will either see a square box, or the letter “C”. The box means that the class is open for registration. The letter “C”
means that the class is already filled up to capacity.
When you find the course (s) that you want/need, click on the square box to the left, scroll down, and click register.
Another way to register for a course is by knowing the CRN number, which is the 5 digit number listed next to a course
[NOT THE COURSE NUMBER]. If you already know the CRN number without going through class search, type it in a box
at the bottom of the add/drop courses page, then click submit changes.
Also under the “Student Tools and Courses” tab, you will find student grades on the left side of the page, and your
academic profile next to that.
Another important link under “Registration and Class Tools” box is the “See Course Descriptions” link. Here you will find
the descriptions of all the courses offered here at Kent State University. You will do a class search just like on the add/drop
courses page, in order to find certain descriptions.
You can also print your student schedule from the “Registration and Class Tools” box. And when you do, you will find your
Banner ID number, located under your name when your schedule appears on the screen. Your Banner ID number is just
as important as your social security number when you become a Kent State student. You will need this number when you
visit the financial aid office, bursar’s office, and also when you take class tests.
On the bottom left side of student tools and courses tab, you will find the “My Courses” box. In this box, you will notice the
list of current courses for which you are registered. When you click on one of the courses, you will see the course name,
section, term, department, and instructor. You can click on the instructor’s name to send an email. You can use this as
another way to email your instructor. Just click, type in your subject and message, and send.
You will also see different links under course tools and personal tools located on the left side. You can find
announcements, links, message boards, and you can even see the other students who are in your class. Under personal
tools, you can create your own profile and add a photo if you wish.
This is very similar to Vista, and your instructor may decide to use this tool as well, or he/she may use either one. Make
sure to find out which will be more useful to you, if they use either one at all.
Another important area to look at is the “Other Student Resources” box located on the bottom right side of the Student
Tools and Courses tab.
One link is the “Student Multimedia Studio” link. This gives you information about Kent State’s student multimedia studio
center, located on the first floor of the library. There, you can create different projects adding video, audio, animation,
narration, graphics and other materials to make your project stand out.
My Account
Under the My Account tab, you will find your identity box which lists your banner ID number. You can also change your
Flashline password in here as well.
In “Update Personal Information” box, you can add, delete, or update any contact information.
In the “My Student Account” box, you will find all of your billing information, including any financial aid that you have or will
be receiving.
In the “Other Account Access” box, you will find how to pay your parking tickets (if any) and also how to add money to
your FLASHcash. Post-secondary students are not eligible for a food plan, but you can add money to your FLASHcash,
which can be used as a debit card at a variety of businesses on and around campus.
Here, you can sign up for FlashALERTS and FLASHperks. FlashALERTS can be very helpful when there is an emergency on campus, or something important that all students need to know. For example, if classes are canceled suddenly,
you will receive a text message saying so. FLASHperks Program is a loyalty/rewards program administered by Kent State
University through which individuals can collect redeemable rewards (“Points”) by attending designated FLASHperks
school administered events.
Library Services
You will find the link to library services, including the regional campus libraries, in the “My Campus” tab under the
‘Campus Resources’ box toward the bottom of the page. You can also find your library account link under the “My
Account” tab, under the “Other Account Access” box. When you click the library link, you will then be on the home page of
library services. Here, you can find out how to search for different articles, journals, and DVDs pertaining to projects and
activities you are doing in class.
On the Library website, you will see a link that says “Ask a Librarian”. After you click on that link, you will see the different
contact information for the library. You can call, text, email and even set an appointment with a librarian to help you with
any question you may have concerning the library and research information. You can also chat with a librarian online. You
will find out how to sign up for tutoring at the library, and how to access Kent’s library online while you’re off campus.
Another important area that the library offers is audio/video services, which can be found by clicking on “Services,” then
“Multimedia.” Here you will find information about the audio/video services. Audio/visual services is located on the third
floor of the library. There you will be able to rent electronic equipment such as cameras and camcorders. You will need
your Flashcard in order to check out any items.
On the library services page, you will also find out how to reserve a group study room, which will be very helpful during
your years here at Kent State.
