Travel-WRITING COURSE IN BALI

Travel-WRITING
COURSE IN BALI
WHAT’S THE BIG DEAL?
Global Hobo runs crash courses in Bali that are
designed to equip aspiring journalists with the
skills to stay afloat in the big bad world of online
media. The month-long programs combine crosscultural exchange with extensive writing tutelage
courtesy of industry professionals from Global
Hobo, Your Friend’s House, VICE, Lonely Planet,
Year13, Stab, Surfing Life and more.
We’ve set up camp in one of the hippest regions
in Indonesia - Canggu, Bali - and staked out lush
bungalows to accomodate everyone, as well as a
snazzy coworking space to teach and work from.
The course costs $1989, and upcoming program
dates are:
November 27 - December 23 2016
January 9 - February 5 2017
The Daily grind
Students receive daily writing workshops on
topics such as feature writing, pitching to editors
and monetising a blog. Additionally, they attend
Bahasa Indonesia language classes with Cinta
Bahasa, one of the most reputable schools in Bali.
In their spare time, students will explore every
cranny of southern Bali to put together a
destination guide in inDesign, which will later be
published as an eBook. This project is entirely
their own - they are in charge of marketing and
selling the book, and distributing the profits.
Also, over the course of the month, students
will be expected to write and pitch two articles.
These will be workshopped in peer and one-on-one
editing classes, and once the final products are
killer, they will be published online.

HOW TO APPLY
Students should send a winning cover letter,
resume and writing sample to our editor, Gemma,
at [email protected] proving why
they are the hobo worthy of this opportunity and
outlining any skills they think may be relevant,
such as photography, social media, the ability to
use inDesign etc.
Any boring emails will be thrown out the window.
TEACHING STAFF
GEMMA CLARKE
Gemma spent her childhood removing leeches from
her ankles and being forced to try slices of jellyfish
by her Wild Thornberry parents. Though her writing
career was nearly cut short when a friend stole her
diary and read it aloud to the entire grade, a thick
wad of travel stories racked up from the depths to
the Amazon to the icecaps of Sweden forced her to
pick her pen back up.
Gemma is the founder and editor of Global Hobo, and
the production editor of the Triple J Annual. She has
freelanced for a number of other publications, writes
brochures for Contiki, consults for Raquet Club and is
the former editor of Your Friend’s House.
NAT KASSEL
Nat is the assistant editor and resident pedant of
Global Hobo. As a Sydney-based freelancer, Nat has
been published by VICE, Your Friend’s House and the
Huffington Post, just to name a few. He is also a
staff writer at Year 13, and is equally interested in
journalism and first-person storytelling.
His previous journeys have spanned across North
America, Europe and a little bit of Northern Africa, but
always lead back to Asia, at least on the way home.
Nat has a slightly unhealthy fascination with the
concept of the perfect pitch, and has received and
issued enough rejection letters to prove it.
MIMI LAMONTAGNE
Mimi LaMontagne prefers to be called Mimi
Champagne (see: phonetics) because her last
name is impossible to pronounce.
This California-born
gal scribes consistently for VICE, Surfing Life and
Red Bull Surfing, and recently was crowned
Communications Manager of Ripcurl. In case you
didn’t realise, she’s pretty keen on surfing.
Though she’s now based on Torquay, Mimi spends
as much of each year as she can travelling between
Australia, the Americas, Europe, Asia and beyond,
pitching to whoever will listen.
SHAUN FISHER
Shaun “Scout” Fisher’s main hobo accolade was
sailing his own boat from America to Cuba, where he
cleaned boats for money and lived solely off fish and
rice. At first glance, he looks too pretty to be a real
hobo, but don’t be fooled: he loves to sleep in the dirt
and dumpster dive.
His stories have masked the walls of Your Friends
House, VICE, Surfing Life, Stab and anyone close
enough to listen. He also fills his pockets writing
articles about beards.
We get around.
