ENTERTAINING AT THE
NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY
From the eminent individuals that adorn the Gallery’s
walls to the dedicated Events Team who will work with
you through each stage of planning, the National Portrait
Gallery is the perfect venue for your special event. The
spectacular spaces available for hire offer a wide range
of options for clients from the contemporary to the
classic, displaying a Collection that encompasses art,
biography, history and fame. This inspirational setting
will ensure your event is one to be remembered.
VENUE HIRE INFORMATION
The National Portrait Gallery is available for exclusive
hire on Monday to Wednesday evenings from 18.30 and
throughout the week from 08.00 to 10.00 for breakfast
events. The Portrait Restaurant is also available for
private receptions and dinners on Saturday and Sunday
evenings. The Ondaatje Wing Theatre can be hired as
part of an evening or breakfast event. Please speak to
the Events Team for more information.
ONDAATJE WING
MAIN HALL
GROUND FLOOR
The Ondaatje Wing Main Hall is the atrium at the
main entrance to the Gallery and provides a dramatic
double height space. A versatile event space offering
you the opportunity to host branded events, product
launches, receptions and pop-up exhibitions. The Main
Hall is adjacent to our special exhibition spaces, so
provides the perfect setting for a private view of a
major exhibition.

LERNER GALLERIES
GROUND FLOOR
The fresh feel of the Lerner Galleries offers a vibrant venue
for a party. Encompassing an exciting programme of
temporary exhibitions throughout the space, the Galleries
also house portraits of the most famous faces from the
present day. Available only at select times of the year, take
advantage of the unique opportunity to entertain amongst
our permanent contemporary Collection.

SPECIAL EXHIBITIONS
AND GUIDED TOURS
Ensure your private event is truly memorable by
combining it with exclusive access to the National
Portrait Gallery’s special temporary exhibitions.
Offering your guests a private view of our otherwise
ticketed exhibitions would be a fantastic addition to
your event. Tour guides can also be offered at a cost
of £200 per guide. Gallery highlights and thematic
tours can also be arranged to enable your guests to
experience an expert insight into key portraits from our
permanent Collection.
BALCONY GALLERY
FIRST FLOOR
This light and innovative space, displaying familiar
faces from the 1960s to 1990s, is ideal for pre-dinner
drinks or an intimate reception. It also works perfectly
when combined with the adjacent Victorian Galleries to
provide a contrast of spaces, from the classic to the
contemporary, to impress your guests.

VICTORIAN GALLERIES
FIRST FLOOR
The stunning layout of the Victorian Galleries offers
a unique and impressive chance to host a reception
or dinner amongst those individuals who were the
important figures in the era when the Gallery was
founded. Magnificent marble busts align the central
corridor and complement the spectacular design of
these galleries.

17TH AND 18TH
CENTURY GALLERIES
SECOND FLOOR
Spread across nine adjoining rooms, the 17th and 18th
Century Galleries provide a fascinating insight into
Restoration society. The layout makes it possible to have
dinner for 230 to 300 guests seated through the series
of rooms, or a more intimate dinner for 20 to 50 in just
one room.

WELDON GALLERIES
SECOND FLOOR
These sublime Galleries embody a combination of
contemporary design with period Regency portraiture.
The striking architectural scheme and vibrant silverleaf
and turquoise silk-lined walls adds elegance and
grandeur to any event.

TUDOR GALLERIES
SECOND FLOOR
The oldest portraits in the Gallery’s Collection are
beautifully displayed here. Perfect for intimate dinners

ONDAATJE WING
THEATRE
LOWER GROUND FLOOR
Located on our Lower Ground Floor, with audio-visual
facilities and comfortable tiered seating, the Ondaatje
Wing Theatre is the perfect space for presentations,
product launches or award ceremonies. The Theatre is
also available to hire as part of a breakfast event.
Capacity: 150 guests.

full hire event
PORTRAIT RESTAURANT
THIRD FLOOR
With its dramatic panoramic windows that look down
Whitehall taking in Nelson’s column and the London
Eye, the Portrait Restaurant is a stunning setting in

HIRE CHARGES
The National Portrait Gallery is hired on an exclusive
basis and is available for evening private hire on Monday to
Wednesday, and on Saturday and Sundays in the Portrait
Restaurant. Breakfast hire is also available Monday to
Friday. Hire costs are based on access from 18.30 to 20.30
for a reception, and from 18.30 to 23.00 for dinner. Time
extensions are possible until 00.00 for an additional £1,250
per hour. Breakfast hire is available between 08.00 and
10.00 and is charged at an hourly rate. The Gallery closes to
the public at 18.00 and event set-up can begin at this time.
