In the longer version of the Passion,
we hear that Judas goes to the
authorities in order to betray Jesus for
financial (and thus, short-term)
advantage. We’d all like to think that
we wouldn’t do the same thing, but
Judas, like us, was one of Jesus’
followers. We could all fall into that
same self-serving net. Despite Judas’
treachery, Jesus sets out to fulfil God’s
mission, whether the crowds are
crying Hosanna! or Crucify!

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns
9th April 2017
Opening Hymn
Gradual Hymn
Offertory Hymn
Refrain:
All glory, laud, and honour
to thee, Redeemer, King!
to whom the lips of children
made sweet hosannas ring.
O love how deep, how broad, how high!
it fills the heart with ecstasy
that God, the Son of God, should take
our mortal form for mortals' sake.
My song is love unknown,
my Saviour's love to me,
love to the loveless shown
that they might lovely be.
O who am I
that for my sake
my Lord should take
frail flesh and die?
He sent no angel to our race
of higher or of lower place
but wore the robe of human frame
himself, and to this lost world came.
Thou art the King of Israel,
thou David's royal Son,
who in the Lord's Name comest,
the King and Blessed One.
Refrain
For us to wicked hands betrayed,
scourged, mocked, in purple robe arrayed,
he bore the shameful cross and death;
for us at length gave up his breath.
The company of angels
are praising thee on high;
and mortal men and all things
created make reply.
Refrain
To him whose boundless love has won
salvation for us through his Son,
to God the Father, glory be
both now and through eternity.
The people of the Hebrews
with palms before thee went;
our praise and prayer and anthems
before thee we present.
Refrain

Webb 1819-85 alt.
TIS 194
To thee before thy passion
they sang their hymns of praise;
to thee, now high exalted,
our melody we raise.
Refrain
Sometimes they strew his way,
and his strong praises sing,
resounding all the day
hosannas to their King.
Then "Crucify!"
is all their breath,
and for his death
they thirst and cry.
They rise, and needs will have
my dear Lord made away;
a murderer they save,
the Prince of Life they slay.
Yet steadfast he
to suffering goes,
that he his foes
from thence might free.
Thou didst accept their praises;
accept the prayers we bring,
who in all good delightest,
thou good and gracious King.

3
He came from his blest throne
salvation to bestow,
but men made strange, and none
the longed-for Christ would know.
But O my friend,
my friend indeed,
who at my need,
his life did spend.

St Saviour’s Cathedral Hymns

Final Hymn
PSALM 31
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
hark, all the tribes hosanna cry!
O Saviour, meek, pursue your road
with palms and scattered garments strowed.
9. Have mercy upon me, O Lord, for I am in trouble:
my eye wastes away for grief,
my throat also and my inward parts.
10. For my life wears out in sorrow,
and my years with sighing:
my strength fails me in my affliction,
and my bones are consumed.
11. I am become the scorn of all my enemies:
and my neighbours wag their heads in derision.
12. I am a thing of horror to my friends:
and those that see me in the street shrink from me.
13. I am forgotten like one dead and out of mind:
I have become like a broken vessel.
14. For I hear the whispering of many:
and fear is on every side;
15. While they plot together against me:
and scheme to take away my life.
16. But in you, Lord, have I put my trust:
I have said 'You are my God.'
17. All my days are in your hand:
O deliver me from the power of my enemies
and from my persecutors.
18. Make your face to shine upon your servant:
and save me for your mercy's sake.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
in lowly pomp ride on to die;
O Christ, your triumphs now begin
o’er captive death and conquered sin.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
the wingèd squadrons of the sky
look down with sad and wondering eyes
to see the approaching sacrifice.
Ride on, ride on in majesty;
your last and fiercest strif e is nigh;
the Father on his sapphire throne
awaits his own anointed Son.
Ride on, ride on in majesty,
in lowly pomp ride on to die;
bow your meek head to mortal pain,
then take, O God, your power and reign!
