American Revolutionary War -> “The Beginning”

First Continental Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. (1774); NC = Three Congressional Representatives
•
To prepare, colonists became local minutemen (be ready at a minute’s notice.); Lexington – Concord (1775).
“Loyalists vs. Patriots”
•
Loyalists (Tories) were people loyal to Britain. (20% – 30% of U.S. population)
•
Patriots (Whigs) were people who supported America.
•
By May of 1775, the Second Continental Congress creates an official army with Patriots to fight the British army.
Battle of Bunker Hill (“Breed’s Hill”)
•
British General Thomas Gage decided on an attack on Breed’s Hill (near Boston).
•
Deadliest battle of war as over 1,000 redcoats and 450 colonists died; colonists proved that they could fight the British army.
“A Power Struggle for Conquest”

“The Attack on Quebec”: July 1775 = Benedict Arnold captured Montreal and failed to take Quebec.
“Proclamation for Suppressing Rebellion” (1775): King George III declares colonies are “open and avowed enemies.”

“Valley Forge” (Northern Colonial Camp; 20 Miles West of the British Army)
•
Washington and his troops endured a winter of terrible suffering, lacking decent food, clothing, and shelter.
•
Washington’s greatest challenge was keeping the military together; men deserted (left without permission); officers resigned.
•
Baron von Steuben helped the troops while volunteers including Washington’s wife, Martha made clothes and cared for sick.
Problems with the Continental Army included depression, lack of supplies, paid with worthless money, and a lack of food.
Turning Point: The Battle of Saratoga (1777) -> A Patriot Win!
“The War Turns to the South”
•
By 1780, the British had captured several southern cities led by Lord George Cornwallis.
•
To stop Cornwallis in our state, local Patriot groups organized and attacked loyalists and pushed them back into Virginia.
“The End of War” – (October of 1791)
•
Cornwallis moved north with his men and becomes trapped at Yorktown, a port on a peninsula of the Chesapeake Bay.
•
Blocked by land from troops and sea from ships (Chesapeake Bay), Cornwallis surrenders at the Battle of Yorktown.
“Treaty of Paris of 1783”: Britain recognizes the colonists independence and set borders for a new country.
•
The United States and its “new government” extends west to the Mississippi River.

American Revolutionary War -> “A Declaration of Independence” (July 4th, 1776) – Signed & Approved!

Before the war ended, Thomas Jefferson wrote a formal declaration which called for independence; rights of new states.
•
Formal Committee Leaders: John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson (primary writer).
•
Natural Rights: Life, Liberty, and Pursuit of Happiness. (“Olive Branch Petition” -> King Refused It!)
•
Main Idea: This document was radical for time with equality and inherent people rights.

55 representatives, including three from N.C. supported this radical document; where did these ideas come from?
1) Thomas Paine’s Common Sense Pamphlet (1776)
•
Selling more than 500,000 copies, this pamphlet declared that it was time for the colonists to stop pretending to be loyal and
just fight England; it “argued for a republic where leaders should have the power at consent of people.”
2) Thomas Hobbes’ Social Contract Theory

This famous article pushed for government to protect the life and safety of all American colonists (stability).

These ideas were found in a famous book known as “Two Treatises of Government.”

Main Idea: If governments break its end of the contract, the people have the right to revolt.
