Welcome! Dryland practice Welcome to Polar Bear Club Week

May 12, 2014, Week 2
Welcome!
Dryland practice
Many thanks to all the swimmers, and parents, who came out for dryland practice last week! It
was great to see how much all the kids have grown since last summer 
For those of you who were scared off by the rain last Friday, please know that you should of
course exercise your best judgment as to whether or not to send your children to practice, but
unless it is a complete hurricane (haha) we pretty much always have something going on during
practice time. For instance, we did have our ice cream social on Friday, but don’t worry if you
missed it, we will surely have another one!
Welcome to Polar Bear Club Week!
The second week of practice is the first week the kids get wet. The water is usually still pretty
chilly during this first week, so be sure to pack them with those fancy Hurricane sweats and
hoodies! (If you need an order form for these and other logo items, please see me or Barb Soenke
at practice)
School in Session Practice Schedule
The kids will get in the pool starting May 12. The schedule is as follows:
Monday – Friday
4 -5pm 10& Unders
5 – 5:30pm Guppies
5:30 – 6:30 11& Ups
Swimsuit, Apparel, and Towel Orders
Apparel order forms will be on hand at practice, so come on everyone and show your team spirit!
Purchase your Holly Tree Hurricane apparel before time is up!
The swimsuit orders were due on May 9, as stated in the previous newsletter. If you still need to
order a suit, first talk to Barb as she may have some samples on hand. If not, then try
www.swimoutlet.com and shop for the TYR Check Jammer or Team Check Diamondfit suit.
It has been a few years since we placed a towel order because we need a minimum order of 40.
If you would like one (and I do recommend them!), please see Barb so she can get a count of
how many are interested. If we have at least 40 then we will order them again. The price per
towel is somewhere in the $20 range if I remember correctly.
Any apparel questions should be directed to Barb Soenke at [email protected]. Thanks!
All apparel item orders are due by Tuesday, May 27th
Coaches Corner
We’re off to a great start this season! We’ve had great participation in Dryland last week, we’ve
had 100% effort, and I’m looking forward to kicking off the season with a bang! Every one of
these swimmers has amazing potential and I can’t wait to help them better themselves as
swimmers and people. I’m also looking forward to our Swim Buddies program as well. I have a
goal setting system that involves the swimmers and helping them keep track of their progress
throughout the season. Swimmers – please remember your goggles and caps. Fins are optional,
but if you own them, please bring them with you to practice. I can’t wait to spend this season
getting to know everyone. Go Hurricanes!
~Coach Roslyn
Hello Guppies! We are so happy to have so many new faces this year and can’t wait to start the
season! Dry land went fantastically and we hope you are as excited as we are to jump in the
water next week. Just a few reminders…please wear a swimsuit and bring a towel starting on
Monday, May 12. Goggles are recommended but not required. ‘Can’t wait to see you all on
Monday at 5:00!
~Coach Alex and Coach Jamie
Certified Officials
Hopefully everyone who was planning to get certified in any of the SAIL positions has had a
chance to do so by now. If not, there are still sessions open in which to do so. SAIL is running
things a bit differently this year in that ALL deck officials must attend their appropriate class,
even if they have been certified in the past. Per the SAIL website, “All Stroke/Turn must attend a live
training class this year– everyone, even the veterans. All Starters must take both Stroke & Turn and Starter classes.
All Referees must take S&T, Starter, and Referee classes. Everyone must take the appropriate online tests.” For
more information, please go to the SAIL website, www.swimsail.org. There are only two more
chances to go to a training session. Here is the schedule:
May 13 – Stroke & Turn, 6pm, Starter 7:30pm, Referee 8 pm all at Adams Mill Y
Clerk of Course 6pm at First Baptist. We still need at least one Clerk of Course! Without
one we cannot hold a meet! Please consider helping out by filling this important need.
May 17 – Stroke & Turn, 9am, Starter 10:30am, Referee 11am all at Adams Mill Y
Here are the links for online certification:




Records & Ribbons – certify
Runner – certify
Timer – certify
Chief Timer – certify
These positions require a classroom session (unless preapproved), online content review (and
video review for Stroke and Turn) and successful completion of the online test:


Clerk of Course – certify
Stroke and Turn Judge – certify
If you have current USA Swimming S&T certification (whether or not you are on the
“preapproved” list) … please forward an email notifying the Officials Chairman of your
certification and take the test at the end of the Stroke & Turn Clinic so that you will be registered
in the database and have a name tag that matches. Of course, we welcome and encourage you to
review the material.
These positions require a classroom session, online content review and successful completion of
the online test:



Coaches – certify
Starter – certify
Referee – certify
Thanks so much for volunteering! We appreciate your going to the extra time and effort to get
certified and make the season a success – we couldn’t do it without you!
Open Positions
You don’t have to certify in order to help out the team! There are still a few other positions to
fill that don’t require SAIL training/certification. For instance, we are still in need of a Social
Director. The Social Director can run all things social, or appoint committee members to run
each/several events. It’s probably the only position with so much versatility. Events to be
arranged include: Spirit parties, Iron Man/Chick, Spirit buddies, Sips-N-Strokes, Divisional
Week, etc. Aside from the Coach, this position is probably the most important one for the kids –
it’s what makes swim team fun! Please consider taking this, or part of this, on. After all, happy
kids make happy parents! 
The future of this team depends on our Guppies! We need a Guppy Parent to be the liaison
between the Guppy Coaches and the Guppy parents. Someone to be in touch with the other
Guppy teams and be the point person at the meets. Someone to help the coaches plan a few
activities and perhaps organize a party at the end of the season. It won’t take much time.
Thanks!
Did you get Laurie’s email this morning? If not, here it is:
Good morning everyone!
I am sending this message regarding the needs we still have for swim team volunteers.
First, I want to thank everyone that has already signed up to volunteer. We have most of the positions
needed for our meets filled! If you have not signed up for a position, following are the current needs that we
have:
1. Clerk of Course - This is our most urgent need, as we currently have no one signed up in this position, and
we need someone for every meet! We do have a few people that are able to help with this position, so if we
can get someone certified, we have people that will be able to give you a break at meets to watch your kids,
get a snack/drink. Please, Please consider this position. Penny Rice, our Clerk of Course from last year, will
not be back this summer. She has told me it is the easiest job she has ever done. Training is Tuesday night.
2. Starter - We need to have at least one other person trained and certified for this position. We only have
one at this time, and if that individual needs to miss a meet, we need another person. Training is Tuesday and
next Saturday.
3. Runners - We need at least 2 other people for this position. Online training and certification.
4. Timers and Recorders - We need a few people for these positions. Online training and certification.
Please let me know if you have any questions about the above positions. I will be glad to give you details
regarding what the jobs require and give more information regarding training.
Please let me know if you are able to help with any of the above positions, so I know that we have enough
people trained and certified in each position.
Thank you.
Laurie Drayton
Season Opener Party
We will be holding our Season Opener Party on Sunday, May 18 from
3 – 7pm. The pool is not open to the members yet, so we have it all to ourselves!
Each family is responsible for their own drinks (no glass on the pool deck!) and a “main dish”. If
your last name starts with letters A-I, please bring an appetizer or side to share. If your last name
starts with letters J-Y, please bring a dessert. Please don’t forget the appropriate serving utensil.
