Prewriting Handout

Module: The Writing Process
Prewriting
Writers who work by
freely associating
different concepts
may prefer to
brainstorm or
freewrite. Freewriting
means to writing
fluidly, without
worrying about
structure, grammar,
or spelling.
Talking with friends or
family about ideas is
another way writers
engage in prewriting.
Visual thinkers may prefer
clustering, which involves
creating a visual map of
interrelated ideas.

Outlining
and Listing
Writers who prefer a more
organized or linear
approach to an assignment
often create lists or
outlines. Note: Outlining is
an especially useful
approach for longer papers.
Tip: Do not skip this part of the
writing process! While we all want to
begin a first draft as soon as
possible, spending some time
thinking, researching, and jotting
down ideas will make the drafting
process easier.
Slow down. Stop. Think. Prewrite.
