THE METROPOLITAN MUSEUM OF ART
Dear Members and Friends of The Metropolitan Museum of Art,
When Francisco Pizarro arrived in Peru in 1532, the Inca Empire was the largest in the world, with
more than ten million subjects from southern Colombia to Chile. Yet it was less than a hundred years old.
Centuries before the Incas rose to power, other advanced civilizations had prospered in Peru, building stone
temples and palaces that rival Machu Picchu in sophistication and beauty.
Next spring, we invite you to travel back to the time before the conquistadors and explore
these pre-Inca sites. Joanne Pillsbury, curator in the Department of the Arts of Africa, Oceania, and the
Americas, will lead this program, which she personally designed. A specialist in the art of the ancient
Americas, Dr. Pillsbury can facilitate behind-the-ropes access to many places where visitors rarely venture.
We will also experience Peru’s more familiar charms, including well-preserved colonial architecture, fine
dining, and luxurious hotels.
We hope you will join us for this journey of a lifetime.
Sincerely,
T RAV E L I NG W I T H YOU
Joanne Pillsbury is the Andrall E.
Pearson Curator in the Museum’s
Department of the Arts of Africa,
Oceania, and the Americas. Widely

Chimú and Inca art, she brings
to the program her insight, extensive work in the field,

visit. She is the editor of Moche Art and Archaeology
in Ancient Peru, among other noteworthy publications.
Dr. Pillsbury is a curator of the forthcoming Design

Depart Miami on an afternoon flight to Lima, Peru’s
cosmopolitan capital, arriving in the late evening.
Accommodations for two nights are at the deluxe Belmond
Miraflores Park Hotel, set beside the Pacific Ocean in one
of the city’s most fashionable neighborhoods.
Fly to Chiclayo and continue to nearby Lambayeque for
a specially arranged morning visit to the Royal Tombs of
Sipán Museum, led by its director, Dr. Walter Alva. His
discovery of the tombs in 1987 has been compared to
Howard Carter’s findings in Egypt. Marvel at the treasures
from the burial chamber of the Lord of Sipán, an aristocrat
of the Moche culture, which flourished a thousand years
before the Incas. Continue with Dr. Alva to the site at Huaca
Rajada, where the discoveries were made. After lunch,
discover Cerro Ventarrón, site of a 4,000-year-old temple
with painted murals. Following check in at the Casa Andina
Select Chiclayo, enjoy a dinner of regional specialties at the
acclaimed Fiesa Restaurant.

Begin the day with an orientation tour. At the Plaza Mayor,
whose history predates the arrival of the Spanish, view several
important colonial buildings. Continue to the Monasteries of
San Francisco and Santo Domingo, where the religious fervor
of the conquistadors is still in evidence. Lunch is at Casa
Aliaga, a beautifully restored colonial mansion that has been
owned by the same family for 17 generations. Then visit the
spectacular recent renovation of the Museo de Arte de Lima,
whose holdings date back 3,000 years. Return to the hotel in
the late afternoon. This evening, we are invited to an afterhours reception at the Pedro de Osma Museum, home to one
of the best painting collections in Peru. Our welcome dinner
is at a local restaurant showcasing Lima’s renowned cuisine.

This morning visit the Brüning National Archaeological
Museum, featuring artifacts of the Moche, Chimú,
Lambayeque, and other civilizations of northern Peru; its
dazzling Gold Room is a special highlight. En route to
Trujillo, explore the archaeological complex of El Brujo
(the shaman), with a guided behind-the-ropes viewing
of excavations that illustrate court life in the time of
the Moches. Also on site is the fascinating Lady of Cao
Museum, dedicated to a mysterious, tattooed queen
discovered in 2006, who is the first pre-Columbian female
ruler ever unearthed by archaeologists. Accommodations
are at the Libertador Hotel, located on the main plaza of
Trujillo. Dinner is at a local restaurant.

Following an architectural tour of this colonial city,
drive south to view an excavation in the company of
a local archaeologist. See immense huacas, or temples,
built nearly two thousand years ago by the Moche
civilization. The striking Temple of the Moon is decorated
with vibrant painted reliefs and striking geometric patterns.
Lunch is in a popular resort area, where fishermen in
traditional reed totora boats can be seen afloat the
Pacific. This afternoon visit the vast imperial complex
of Chan Chan, the UNESCO-recognized ancient capital
of the Chimú Empire and the largest pre-Columbian
city in the Americas. Continue to the restored, 12thcentury Chimú temple, Huaca El Dragón, before returning

Explore the Incan Fortress of Ollantaytambo, where Manco
Inca and his band of rebels defeated Pizarro’s soldiers in
one of the few battles lost by the Spanish; the village below
the ruins retains its original Incan layout and character.
Visit a lively handicraft market in nearby Pisac and the
remarkable sun temple overlooking the village. Following
lunch, return to the hotel, where the balance of the day is at
leisure, perhaps to enjoy the spa facilities or a culinary class
in neo-Andean cuisine. Dinner is at leisure.

Depart by train for a glorious morning ride to Machu
Picchu, “the Lost City of the Incas.” This royal summer
retreat, untouched by the conquistadors, was unknown to
archaeologists until American explorer Hiram Bingham
rediscovered it a century ago. Its expertly crafted structures
were planned to harmonize with the spectacular landscape.
As Bingham wrote in National Geographic, “Remarkable
as is the architecture of Machu Picchu, and impressive as
is the extent of the stone-cutting done by a people who had
no steel or iron tools, neither of these things leaves more
impression on the mind of the visitor than the inexpressible
beauty and grandeur of the surroundings.” There will
be free time to explore this site before descending to the
nearby village for an overnight stay at the Inkaterra Machu
Picchu, nestled in 12 acres of lush tropical gardens. Dinner
is at the hotel.

rise through the mist over Machu Picchu. Alternatively,
climb to Huayna Picchu, the rocky peak offering
panoramic views of this magnificent site. Following lunch,
depart by train for Cusco and transfer to the elegant
Belmond Palacio Nazarenas, a restored 16th-century
Carmelite convent. Dinner is at the hotel.

Discover Cusco, ancient capital of the Incas, on a tour
that includes the Plaza de Armas and its strikingly
ornate cathedral. A special highlight is the Convent of
Santo Domingo, built atop legendary Koricancha, the
most sumptuous temple in the Inca Empire. Koricancha,
which means “Golden Courtyard” in Quechua, was
dedicated to worship of the sun god, filled with lifesized, solid-gold statues of llamas, shepherds, and other
figures. Lunch is at an exclusive colonial house on the
grounds of a former Inca Palace. This afternoon, visit
Tambomachay, a sacred bathing spring; the Incan ruins
of Puca Pucara (Red Fortress); and the amazing
fortress of Sacsayhuaman, built without mortar. Dinner
is at leisure.
