Cheers to the talented and wine-loving ladies of HOT IN CLEVELAND for supporting us this year!
Be sure to tune in to TVLand to watch their hilarious exploits. Season 5 begins March 2014.
H ere we are again. Three years
at beautiful Windfall Farms, and
now branching out to extra days
and venues to accommodate all the
outstanding winemakers and their
growing legion of fans. That's you.
When we were originally inspired to
gather these high-quality, hard-tofind winemakers under one roof, we
figured it was a good idea. After all,
these are the wines we like to drink,
and many of these winemakers are our
friends, so we knew we would have a
good time even if nobody else showed
up.
But show up you did, and in numbers
that surprised even us. Turns out
there are a whole bunch of people like
us who enjoy discovering amazing
winemakers working under the radar.
So many, in fact, that The Garagiste
Festival keeps growing and growing.
This past Spring, we premiered The
Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure
in Santa Ynez- another sold-out
smash - this time featuring garagiste
winemakers from Santa Barbara
County. We're sure some of you were
there. We hope you'll join us again
on March 29,2014 in Solvang for the
second annual Southern Exposure
Festival. The winemakers had so
much fun, some of them came North
just to be part of this Festival at our
new event, "The Opening Round" at
the Pavilion on the Lake in Atascadero
- another amazing venue.
We also continue to hold Garagiste
"mini-tastings" throughout Southern
California. This past summer SoCal
wine lovers and garagiste fans flocked
to events in Hollywood, Newport
Beach, Santa Monica and Pasadena.
Stay tuned for more of these events as
we continue to spread the love about
the under-recognized, but superior
winemakers who are passionately
hand-making some of the best wine in
the world to people like you, who love
these wines as much as we do.
And that' s the best part. You get
Charlie Paladin Wayne has been a chef on the
Central Coast since 1983, working at numerous
restaurants including Sea Venture, Olde Port Inn,
Cafe Roma, Inn at Morro Bay, and Rhythm Creekside
Cafe. He was one of the first chefs in the area to
focus on creating menus from the emerging local
artisan food movement, showcasing local organic
produce, seafoods, cheeses and sustainably ranched
meats. Then, when there were only nine wineries
in business in the area, he expanded his focus to
matching local foods with local wines. He created
the first wine dinner in 1987 for Eberle and went on
to serve as chef at several of the area's early flagship
wineries, including Edna Valley, Justin Vineyards and
Surnmerwood Winery, where he developed a following
and a reputation as the go-to chef for creative and
perfectly balanced food and wine pairings. Today,
Chef Charlie is one of the area's most in-demand event
chefs, bringing his unique flair with local wines, foods
and service to private events.
to discover and explore new and
unfamiliar winemakers, while they
get to reach a whole new audience.
Everybody wins.
So please enjoy the day(s), discover
new labels and varietals, mix and talk
with the winemakers, taste and learn
at the seminars, indulge in the foodie
equivalent of Garagiste wines, rock
(and we do mean rock) at the After
Party, and get ready to take that step
into winemaking yourself at our userfriendly, tasting-involved, Sunday
seminar featuring two outstanding
winemakers (one is a professor at Cal
Poly!) sharing their secrets in a casual,
fun and practical way. Once you get
the bug, you never know... maybe
you'll be pouring here yourself one
day.
Cheers from the Garagiste Team!

This new event features the latest offerings of 17
additional wineries from all over the Central Coast,
including a few favorites from our Southern Exposure
event that featured wineries from the Santa Ynez
Valley region.
Participating Wineries: Archium Cellars, Ascension
Cellars, Barton Family Wines, Casa Dumetz, Cholame
Vineyard, DuBost Winery, Frequency Wines, MCV
Wines, Michael Gill Cellars, C. Nagy Wines, Pence
Ranch, Powell Mountain Cellars, PlanB Cellars, Sea

WINEMAKER MIXER
7:30pm-9:30pm
The Pavilion on the Lake
Sponsored by "The WiVi Central
Coast Symposium & Trade Show"
This hugely popular evening event returns with onetime-only opportunities to taste some remarkable
off-the-grid wines and chat with the people who
make them. Wineries from both days will be in
attendance. Our theme of 11 Shiners, Samples &
Secrets" showcases over 25 unreleased, barrel
samples, wine club only and pre-release wines that
will be poured alongside hearty appetizers provided
by Pacific Harvest Catering.
"What's Wrong With This Picture?
Educate Your Palate About the Most
Common Wine Flaws"
11 :OOam-11 :30am
This tasting seminar led by Cal Poly professor and
"garagiste" Matt Brain will help attendees identify (and
understand the cause of) wine flaws such as TCA (cork
taint), Oxidization, Bret (Brettanomyces), VA (Volatile
Acidity), and more, with a comparison tasting of flawed
wines side-by-side with their unflawed counterparts. You
will never again be intimidated about returning a flawed
bottle to a snooty waiter.
SEMINAR#2
11
Garagiste Outlaws: Breaking the Old
World Blending Rules"
11 :45am-12:30pm
The Central Coast and its garagistes are known for their
innovative blends, and this seminar offers tastings of some
of the best. Find out why certain varieties are just made for
each other, why others are too mutually destructive ever to
be seen in public (or private!) together - and why many of
those Old World blending rules are just made to be broken
- all to the benefit of wine drinkers. Panelists include:
Christian Tietje of Cypher Wines and Jeff Strekas of
ONX Wines.
GRAND TASTING
2:00pm-5:00pm
Find your favorites from our lineup ot49 winemakers
pouring over 140 different wines.
AFTER PARTY
6:00pm-9:00pm
We take the evening up a notch with the raucous tunes
of High Voltage, plus enjoy some local beer and gourmet,
~od-fired pizzas from Gypsy Flame.

Garagiste Festival 2013
5
The Garagiste Festival is produced by Garagiste Events, a nonprofit dedicated to furthering the education of future winemakers
and those training for employment within the wine industry,
especially those located on the Central Coast. Since its inception
in 2011, the festival has donated $20,000 to the Cal Poly Wine and
Viticulture program and proceeds from this year's festival will
also be donated to the program.

WINEMAKER SYMPOSIUM
"Nothing's Perfect: How to
Manage and Influence Your
Wines to Greatness"
Presented by Laffort
"The Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture Program prepares highly skilled
college graduates that can adapt to the growing, making and selling of
wine to economic and environmental change. We are very grateful for
the generous donation from the Garagiste Festivals in 2012, and for
the continued support of the Festival organizers. Garagiste donations
in support of the Wine and Viticulture Department helps leverage the
Learn-by-Doing philosophy and our Central Coast location to ensure
that Cal Poly graduates become the next generation of wine industry
leaders. "
--Jim Cooper, Director Wine and Viticulture Program, Cal Poly
ll:OOam-l:OOpm
There is a reason that so many winemakers
go to college for a degree in Enology - there
is a lot to learn. But you don't need a college
degree to make excellent wine, especially if you
get the kind of basic fundamentals that we are
offering at this seminar. The oldest adage in
the wine world says that what happens in the
vineyard is the major component in making a
great wine. While for the most part this is true,
there are many curveballs that nature can throw
at a winemaker that need to be managed in the
winery. This symposium will look behind the
curtain to reveal some of the tips and techniques
used by master winemakers to influence
successful outcomes in their wines.
Matt Brain, co-owner and co-winemaker for
Baker & Brain Wines, and a professor at Cal
Poly, and Adam LaZarre, owner/winemaker of
LaZarre Wines and consultant to Laffort, will
explore some of the common hurdles faced by
winemakers and attendees will have the rare
opportunity to taste the influences of various
remedies commonly used to craft the best
possible wine.

Garagiste Festival 2013
About the Cal Poly WVIT Department
The newly formed Wine and Viticulture Department has nearly
300 undergraduate majors emolled, making Cal Poly Department
the largest program in the country. All WVIT students learn the
foundations of viticulture, winemaking and wine business, and
develop a skill-set geared to enter the multi-dimensional wine
industry. Essential skills are developed in courses using our
14-acre teaching vineyard and pilot winery, our stewardship
over the Cal Poly Wines brand, and our collaboration with
industry partners. The Program incorporates the Learn-by-Doing
philosophy by requiring completion of both an internship in the
grape and/ or wine industry and a senior "capstone" project.
We also encourage our students to participate in undergraduate
research, numerous campus Enterprise Projects, and the Vines to
Wines student club through which students gain the opportunity
to explore the diversity of wine growing and wine making
systems and approaches. Plans for the Program include further
development of a teaching varietal vineyard block, research and
development of sustainable viticulture practices, stress-tolerant
rootstock, and control of wine qualities through vineyard and
winery practices. We are in the schematic design phase of a new
campus teaching and research w inery that will be used both
for winemaking research and for the production of the Cal Poly
commercial wines.
