2010 Thanksgiving Feast
November 15, 2010
Not what we say about our blessings, but how we use
them is the true measure of our Thanksgiving.
-W.T. Purkiser
Thank you to all the parents and staff of Erickson School for collaborating to make our
Thanksgiving Feast a success. Your spirit of volunteerism has been a gift for all of our children as well as our community.
A special thank you to Dr. Markgraf, Miss Green, Mrs. Cherrie, Mrs. Kotche, Dr.
Niemiec, Mrs. Noran, as well as all the teachers who helped the students with their contributions to the feast.
Our students have been working hard using their creativity and talents to make our feast
special. Thank you to Kindergarten and 1st grade for the placemats, 2nd grade for singing,
3rd grade for centerpieces, 4th grade for the banners, and 5th grade for the thank you notes.
We also want to thank the Students for Character Counts for their performance and the
Student Council for the paper product and book drive. Bloomingdale Township Food
Pantry will be receiving the donated paper products, and books that are collected will be donated to Indian Reservations.
We would also like to welcome and thank our community members who have come to share
this day with us. Your presence makes this day memorable.

Thanksgiving facts to share at the table……
A spooked turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also break
into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.
The first Thanksgiving celebration can be traced back to the Plymouth Pilgrims in
the fall of 1621.
The Wampanoag chief Massasoit and ninety of his tribesmen were also invited to
the first Thanksgiving feast. Governor William Bradford invited them for helping
the Pilgrims surviving and teaching them the skills of cultivating the land.
The celebration in 1621 lasted for three days and included games and food.
The president to proclaim the first 'National Day of Thanksgiving' in 1789 was
George Washington.
Sarah Josepha Hale, a magazine editor, campaigned to make Thanksgiving a National Holiday in 1827 and succeeded.
Abraham Lincoln announced Thanksgiving to be a national holiday in his proclamation on October 3, 1863.
The 'wishbone' of the turkey is used in a good luck ritual on Thanksgiving Day.
Days of Thanksgiving were celebrated throughout the colonies after fall harvests.
All thirteen colonies did not, however, celebrate Thanksgiving at the same time
until October 1777.
George Washington was the first president to declare the holiday, in 1789.
Sarah J. Hale lobbied for a national Thanksgiving holiday, which is what led to our
current holiday.
In 1939, 1940, and 1941 Franklin D. Roosevelt, seeking to lengthen the Christmas
shopping season, proclaimed Thanksgiving the third Thursday in November. Controversy followed, and Congress passed a joint resolution in 1941 decreeing that
Thanksgiving should fall on the fourth Thursday of November, where it remains.

The Talking Plant
Once upon a time there was a far far away field where flowers were in groups.
But one day a new plant grew. It was not like the other plants, it was rainbow!
So it went in on its own pile, but there was no other flower to comfort him! He
knew a secret that no other plant knew. He could talk! So one day he said, “We
are flowers, we are not just decorations, we live!” So everybody hopped to
town and they got used for gardening! They stayed in the ground!

Once upon a time when it was fall, I woke up and looked out the window. I
saw lots of leaves in my backyard. So I went down stairs, brushed my teeth,
got dressed and put a heavy coat on because it was very cold out. Then I
started to put the leaves in a pile and the pile got bigger and bigger when I put
the leaves in. When I was done the pile was so big it was bigger than me. After a few minutes later a big wind blew and my pile was destroyed. I was
mad. So I put the pile back together and when I was done it was almost getting dark. So I went inside brushed my teeth and went to sleep.
