Introduction:
Maybe it doesn’t snow where you live or there is no snow yet, but as the days grow colder you
start to dream of sledding and Santa and making SNOWMEN. While you wait for the real thing
you can make this cheery snowman from stuff you have around the house. You can use our
suggestions on how to decorate your snowman or use your imagination to create your own
crazy snow creatures. When you make a snowman outside you have to look around the yard to
find the little things that help him come to life – do the same thing for your ‘no-snow-snowman’,
only use things from the kitchen, the recycling bin and/or the craft room.
When you are done we would love to see your creations. Please go to our gallery and upload
your finished masterpiece.
Instructions:
1. Take bubble wrap, newspaper or tissue paper and
wade it up into a ball about the size of a large
grapefruit. Use some masking tape to wrap around the
ball to hold the shape.
2. Make 2 more balls, one the size of a small grapefruit or
large orange, and the other the size of a small orange.
The 3 balls should not be the same size – you should
have a small, medium and large ball.
3. For each ball you will need several sheets of white paper towel. The paper towels will
need to be wet. Run these under the faucet, squeeze out the excess water and then
straighten them out to flat sheets again.
4. Hold a ball in one hand and coat the top half with white craft glue. Take a wet paper
towel and lay it over the glued section of the ball and then rotate the ball to the other
side. Apply more glue to the underside and smooth the paper towel to surround the ball.
5. Apply more glue over the top of the first sheet and
lay on a second sheet over the first.
6. The medium and large balls may not be able to be
covered entirely with one sheet so overlap several
sheets until you have good coverage. The balls
should be completely covered in white paper,
enough so that nothing shows through from the
inside.
7. Set the balls aside to dry.
8. The white paper balls may be fine as they are or you can use white paint to make them
the white a bit brighter. Or if you want a fluffier look you can try wrapping the balls in
white fleece fabric.
9. If your Mom or Dad has a hot glue gun they can glue the 3 balls
together, (large on bottom, medium in the middle and the small
one on top). If you don’t have a hot glue gun, you can pierce
the balls with a bamboo skewer or a sharp pencil and thread the
balls together.
10. To create the eyes choose to similar dark items: 2 black beans, 2
buttons, 2 pieces of black felt or just black paint. Glue or apply
these to the face of your snowman.
11. For the nose, cut a piece of orange foam or crayon, or roll a
piece of orange paper into a long narrow cone. Glue the cone
to the face of the snowman.
12. The mouth should be painted as a series of small
dark dots in a wide grin. You could also try gluing on
little pieces of felt or whole cloves stuck into the ball.
Use your imagination.
13. For the arms, go out to the backyard and break off
a few twigs from any bush or tree. Use a sharp
pencil or screwdriver to poke holes in the sides of
the top of the middle ball. Put glue into the holes
and then push the twig arms into the holes. (You
may need to support the arms until the glue is dry.)
front of the middle ball.
14. Glue 3 buttons (or felt circles or beans) down the
15. Cut a piece of felt or scrap fabric
about 18” long by 1” wide. Cut
along the edges to create fringe.
Wrap the scarf around the neck of
your snowman.
16. Cut a triangle of fleece or fabric that
is big enough to go around the head
and overlap slightly. Sew or glue 2
sides of the triangle together to
create a pointed cap. Pull the cap
on and glue it in place.
17. If your snowman is having trouble
standing upright try gluing some
small stones around the base in a
circle and then painting the rocks
white or cover them with white
fleece or fake snow. This will help
weight the bottom and keep him
from toppling over.
18. Place your snowman on the
windowsill or mantel along with some
pine cones or greenery and enjoy
your new melt-free no-snowman!
