With Christmas fast approaching it doesn’t seem like twelve months since I sat down to write last year’s Christmas message. Our thoughts turn to the “Festive Season” with family and friends and a time to reflect on the activities of the year gone by. The club has enjoyed another very successful year with a total of 15 events organised which have all been well attended and many of us are looking forward to the rally to Holland next year. I am truly grateful to your hard working committee for helping to make all these events such a success. Some members have had a difficult year, and I am sure our thoughts have been, and will continue to be with them. On behalf of David and myself, and all the members of your committee I would like to wish you all Committee Julia Hamon 851840 Carol Bernardini 744970 Barry Smith 859867 Graham Francis 746029 Monique Lawrence 853891 A very Happy Christmas and Healthy and Peaceful, New Year” Glenda Diary dates Auditors David Le Marquand Dennis Ferbrache Newsletter contributions Contributions to the newsletter or website are always welcome and should be e-mailed to [email protected] although inclusion in either medium cannot be guaranteed. Glenda welcomed everybody and then we got stuck in to a very tasty, good old, fashioned Jersey bean crock, made by several committee members accompanied by a glass of wine or a soft drink for those who wanted it. This was followed by a slice of cheesecake all washed down with tea or coffee. Sixty two members attended the evening which was greatly enjoyed by all. The best laid plans of mice and men go oft awry or so it is said but that was indeed what happened to the plans for the November meeting this year. On the morning of the meeting, at the last minute, our speaker for the evening, Sadie Le Sueur-Rennard, was unfortunately unable to attend. We were extremely fortunate therefore to have Peter Tabb step in at the very last moment to take her place. Peter is obviously a seasoned after dinner speaker and regaled us with tales of his career working at the Evening Post (as it was then) and later in advertising and PR. It was all most interesting and amusing. He has certainly been around! Robin Perchard then gave out some further information and leaflets for the 2017 rally to Holland. The evening ended just before ten o'clock. Another successful Club event and thanks to all those who worked so hard behind the scenes to make it all happen, particularly our team of cooks who made the bean crocks. Well done. JCCC Newsletter for January 2017 Page 2 © Copyright 2017 JCCC Christmas Lunch Report Seventy seven people attended the Club Christmas Lunch held at the St. Brelades Bay Hotel on the Sunday 4th of December. After one or two complaints last year the management of the hotel certainly made sure that we were really well looked after this time. It was generally agreed, that the service and food were faultless The lunch started at around 12:30 with a complementary bucks fizz, or soft drink for those who wanted it, before moving in to the restaurant at one o'clock. Glenda welcomed everybody and then we all got down to the serious business of eating. And what a feast it was. A well balanced three course menu with four choices for each course and something for everyone, finishing with tea or coffee, mince pies and sweet meats. Another excellent event and grateful thanks to all those hard working Committee members and the hotel staff for making it the success it was. In fact, everybody was so pleased we have already booked for 2017. So make a note in your diary for 3rd December 2017 when we can do it all again. Film Evening The Film Evening takes place on Wednesday 18 th January 2017 at Les Ormes, at 8:00pm. (please note the new venue). As usual John Williams will be putting together another evening of entertainment including film of this year's rally. There will of course be half time refreshments and the opportunity to do what members do so well – chat! So why not come along and enjoy the evening? JCCC Newsletter for January 2017 Page 3 © Copyright 2017 JCCC Proposed Rally at Recreatie Centrum Koningshof near Rijnsburg Holland from 11th to 18th June 2017 Further to the article in the last newsletter, Robin Perchard has produced the following information which people travelling to the rally may find helpful. Notes regarding the journey to Holland On your way to Holland it is worth thinking about how to break your journey. Honfleur is well worth stopping for a day to look around. A good campsite is Camping Domaine Catiniere. This is a pleasant ACSI campsite, in the country, not far off the main road, near the Pont de Normandie, about 145 miles from St Malo. Another city well worth stopping for a day to see is Bruges in Belgium (235 miles further on from Honfleur) which is a beautiful place to see. A suitable campsite here is Camping Klein Strand 8 miles outside Bruges. However if you find Honfleur to Bruges too far to go in one day or want an alternative, Camping Le Val d’Authie in the Picardy region is a good halfway house. This is a very good campsite in an area of the Somme which is well worth exploring. It is 125 miles from Honfleur and is on the road to Bruges. From Bruges, it is 155 miles to the campsite in Holland and the roads will be busy in some areas. The picture to the left shows the entrance to Recreatie Centrum Koningshof, the Dutch campsite, which is well placed to see many of the major cities and is central for sites of interest in Holland. Holland is surprisingly small and it doesn’t take long to get around. If you wish to attend this rally and have not yet sent a booking slip, with your deposit of €30.00 per head, to Robin Perchard, please do so by 11th January 2017 You will find a booking slip at the end of this newsletter. N.B, even if you returned the reply slip expressing an interest in the rally, you still need to send in a booking slip with your deposit. There is more rally information on our web site under 'news' at www.jerseycamping.org.je David Killip has sent me information about a book from Vicarious Books called Road Trip Europe; Go Dutch which, if you are going to Holland, looks like a good read. See www.vicarious-shop.com for more details JCCC Newsletter for January 2017 Page 4 © Copyright 2017 JCCC Club Breakfast Sunday 29th January 2017 Glenda has again kindly arranged a Club Breakfast at Stanley's Cafe at the Holme Grown farm shop (The most southerly farm shop in the British Isles according to the Holme Grown web site). As usual each person will be able to order and pay for their own meal individually which simplifies the organisation of the event and means everybody gets what they want. Tea and coffee will be complimentary. We meet at Stanley's at 09:30 but when you leave is up to you. If you would like to join the party please let Glenda know by phone on 01534 864200 or by e-mail on [email protected] It is a wonderful opportunity to meet up with other club members and have a good old chin wag. The breakfast at Stanley's isn't bad either, so do try and come along. Choosing a Spouse (From Dave and Glenda Killip) A man wanted to get married but was having trouble choosing among three likely candidates. He gives each woman a present of £5,000 and watches to see what they do with the money. The first does a total makeover. She goes to a fancy beauty salon, gets her hair done, new make-up; buys several new outfits and dresses up very nicely for the man. She tells him that she has done this to be more attractive for him because she loves him so much. The man was impressed. The second goes shopping to buy the man gifts. She gets him a new set of golf clubs, some new gizmos for his computer, and some expensive clothes. As she presents these gifts, she tells him that she has spent all the money on him because she loves him so much. Again, the man is impressed. The third invests the money in the stock market. She earns several times the £5,000. She gives him back his £5,000 and reinvests the remainder in a joint account. She tells him that she wants to save for their future because she loves him so much. Obviously, the man was impressed. The man thought for a long time about what each woman had done with the money he'd given her. Then he married the one with the biggest boobs. Men are like that, you know. Did you know? (From Dave and Glenda Killip) There is more money being spent on breast implants and Viagra today than on Alzheimer's research. This means that by 2040, there should be a large elderly population with perky boobs and huge erections and absolutely no recollection of what to do with them. JCCC Newsletter for January 2017 Page 5 © Copyright 2017 JCCC Bowling Evening Wednesday February 15th at Jersey Bowl Due to popular demand, Collette Willmett has again organised a bowling evening at Jersey Bowl on Wednesday, February 15th. As usual we will meet at 6:45pm and commence bowling at 7:00pm. Afterwards, at about 8:00pm there will be a finger buffet. If you would like to attend please fill in and return the reply slip at the and of this newsletter with your cheque to the address on the slip. It promises to be a lot of fun and even if you don't bowl you can still come along to watch and enjoy the atmosphere and join the meal afterwards. 2017 Shakedown Rally The shakedown Rally for 2017 has been organised at Camping Les Embruns just off the D124 at Le Pouldu, near Lorient. It is a five star campsite, with 33 mobile homes and 76 touring pitches located just 250 mts from a south facing beach. It has all the facilities you would expect including a heated pool, restaurant, shop, wifi and fully serviced pitches with 16amp electricity supply at €17 per night. Chalets are €275.00 for 7 nights. Members wanting a chalet must book with the campsite directly. As is usual with the shakedown, there will be no formal program of events but it is likely that a meal will be organised on the last night either at the camp restaurant or a nearby venue. If you would like to attend, please complete the reply slip at the end of this newsletter (even if you put your name on the round robin at the Christmas Lunch) and return it to Rob Hamon at the address on the slip, by January 31st 2017. The picture above shows a view of the entrance to the campsite looking west along Rue du Philosophe Alain. Reception is the low building on the right of the picture while the picture below shows the area of the campsite from the air (the campsite is at the bottom centre of the picture). French President François Hollande, tired of all of the anti-french jokes, has announced with great national pride that the super secret French Space Agency will send the first manned mission of three French astronauts to land, and walk on the Sun. President Hollande stated "This mission will be of historic importance and restore France's rightful place in the history of the world". NASA space scientist's, stunned at the news, asked Mon. Hollande what technology they had developed to keep the astronauts from burning up long before they reached the Sun? The French President sniffed and replied "Don't be stupid, we are going at night". JCCC Newsletter for January 2017 Page 7 © Copyright 2017 JCCC STRANGE VANS Each issue I'll be looking around the world for weird and wonderful caravans, motor homes and other camping pictures. This time, it's well, just plain weird. Below left, this ultimate recreational vehicle is based on a Komatsu 830E, 231 tonne dumper truck as used in many quarries throughout the world. It is over 40ft high, 46ft long and almost 24ft wide. Powered by a 16 cylinder, 60 litre, 2,461 hp engine, it has a top speed of 39mph.and, without the house on top, it weighs in at just under 155 tonnes. Phew. Get that on Condor! Then above right is what has been described as a "Castle Truck" which is occupied by a mobile blacksmith and "several nephews." One of the towers has bunk beds with ladder access while the other part of the rig is devoted to the blacksmithing business. Those flagpoles run up three-times the height of the unit but fold down for travel. Note too the drawbridge which forms a step in to the place and also folds up for travel. And now (as Monty Python would say) for something completely different. Yup that picture to the left really is an upside down Airsteam caravan which has been converted to a boat. Can't think why anybody would want to do that? And finally, still on a nautical theme, on the right, for those who can't make up their minds as to whether to go camping or boating at the weekend, the ultimate marriage of boat and campervan. Thought to have been based on the design of a WWII DUKW it has been significantly modified to produce this rather splendid, two storey, amphibious vehicle. Look out for the next crop of Strange Vans in the next issue of the Newsletter due out in mid February 2017. And remember, if you have any pictures of strange vans you would like to share, please e-mail them to me.
