Date: Time: Admission: Saturday May 6, 2006 12:30pm - 5:30pm Free BAZAAR VOLUNTEERING OPPORTUNITIES The Annual Bazaar provides many opportunities for volunteers of all ages. From now until the day of Bazaar there is lots of work that goes into making this event a huge success. NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY to be a volunteer and there are jobs for young people who need high school volunteer hours as well as the “young at heart.” Time commitments can be tailored according to your availability, from a few hours to a few days, whatever you are willing to commit to. Mochitsuki Day Mochitsuki Day is the first of two very important work bees that are held before the Bazaar. This year’s work bee will be on Sunday April 30, 2006 from about 9:00am to until late afternoon. If you’ve ever wondered how you turn those little pearly white grains into the white patties that become delicious, chewy toasted treats, this is your chance. We can use lots of volunteers on this day, so come with your family and friends!!! Sushi Bee Day Sushi Bee day is our second very important work bee. This will be held on Friday May 5, 2006 from 12:30pm to late afternoon. Please note that we will be starting a little later than in previous years. There are lots of different jobs, including rolling, stuffing, cutting, packing, etc. Everybody is welcome and we can always use a lot of help. Don’t miss your chance to participate in making one of the most popular items at our bazaar!! Telephone Help 2 Hello! Bonjour! Moshi moshi! Can you pick up a phone and say hello? If you can, then this is the volunteer experience for you. A large part of the success of our bazaars, is the many donations that individuals and corporations make to the event each year. This process starts with a letter that is sent early in the year. Starting now, we follow up these letters with a quick reminder phone call. We are looking for volunteers who would be able to make some phone calls on behalf of the JCCC even from the comfort of your own home. Your quick phone call could result in a fantastic donation for the JCCC. JCCC FAMILY MOVIE DAY “QUILL” A HEART-WARMING JAPANESE MOVIE FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY Join us at the JCCC for Family Movie Day on Saturday April 8, 2006 at 2:00pm. We will be featuring Quill, director Yoichi Sai’s heart-warming story of a seeing-eye dog who touches the lives of several people. This 2005 film is based on a true story. As a labrador puppy, Quill is sent to live with a couple, Isamu (Teruyuki Kagawa) and Mitsuko Nii (Shinobu Terajima), who work as volunteers, training guide dogs. When he grows to an adult dog, he is taken to a guide dog school, by a friendly, yet firm trainer Satoru Tawada. Although Quill is a little slower than the other dogs at the school, he seems to have an unusual ‘empathy’ and remarkable patience with his trainers. Tawada decides that Quill would be the ideal guide dog for Mitsuru Watanabe (Kaoru Kobayashi), but Wanatabe, a lonely and ill-tempered middle aged man, isn’t as enthusiastic - he would “would rather sleep than be dragged around by a dog.” From here, the story is narrated by Watanabe’s daughter, Mitsuko (Yukika Sakuratani), and slowly, Watanabe is rehabilitated, venturing into the outside world, and learning, not only to trust other humans, but the animal at his side who guides him. According to Ken Eisner of Vancouver’s Georgia Straights Newspaper, “Quill is a warm-hearted, visually charming, and ultimately thought-provoking tribute to the ways, little and large, that these creatures improve our lives.” In Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets are available at the JCCC Reception Desk 416-441-2345. Date: Time: Admission: Saturday April 8, 2006 2:00pm JCCC members - $5 Adults, $3 Children, $10 Family Non-members - $7 Adults, $4 Children, $14 Family ‘QUILL’ DVD - PRE ORDER NOW!! DVD: Single Disc Runtime: 100 Minutes Language: Japanese with English Subtitles DORA-HEITA: THE SAMURAI ARE BACK FOR MOVIE NIGHT A SUBLIMELY ENTERTAINING AND OLD-FASHIONED BLEND OF SAMURAI ACTION, DRAMA AND PLENTIFUL HUMOUR! Dora-heita, the 74th film from master film director Kon Ichikawa, won the Berlinale Camera Prize at the Berlin International Film Festival when it was released in 2000. The film stars Koji Yakusho, star of such films as Shall We Dance, The Eel and Memoirs of a Geisha, as well Asano Yuko and Sugawara Bunta. A new town magistrate has been sent down from Edo. His name is Mochizuki Koheita, but his nickname is Dora-Heita (Alleycat) because of his notoriously dissolute ways, such as drinking, gambling and womanizing. The small town where he is to preside is really run by a bunch of yakuza in criminal liaison with the leaders of the feudal clan that controls the area. When “Magistrate Alleycat” appears they laugh him off until it becomes apparent that he is much more than he seems. Actually, he is a serious and responsible civil servant who has been sent by headquarters to rid the town of its evil leaders…. The film has an interesting history. There was a circle named “Four Knight’s Circle” (Shiki No Kai) established in 1969 by four master film directors, Kurosawa Akira (1910-1998), Kinoshita Keisuke (1919-1998), Kobayashi Masaki (1916-1996), and Ichikawa Kon. This film is directed by Ichikawa Kon, who is the only surviving film director, based on the script co-written by the four masters. The original story written by a famous author, Yamamoto Shugoro, has been filmed in 1959 as “Machi Bugyo Nikki Tekka Botan” directed by Misumi Kenji. Unapologetically old-fashioned in structure and style, the film blends samurai action with drama and plentiful humour to superbly entertaining effect. In Japanese with English subtitles. Tickets are available at the JCCC Reception Desk 416-441-2345. Date: Time: Admission: Thursday April 27, 2006 7:00pm $5 for JCCC members, $7 for non-members HERITAGE LOUNGE SPEAKER SERIES WITH MEL TSUJI A special invitation is extended to the community to hear and honour one of the pioneers of television journalism, Mel Tsuji on Thursday April 20, 2006 at 7:00pm. Over 40 years ago, Mel Tsuji started his long journalism career as the English Editor of the New Canadian newspaper, writing and reporting stories about the Japanese Canadian community. This past year, he resumed that job as a reporter for the newest JC paper, the Nikkei Voice, writing stories that he believes have gone unreported all these years. ”It’s just been things I’ve been interested in,” he said in an interview. “Baseball and hockey have always been part of the JC community, but those stories have never been given historical context or perspective. I hope I’ve done that.” Mel is known in the community as a writer/editor with CBC radio in Toronto and transferred to television as a reporter, editor and producer for 20 years. Currently, he teaches broadcast journalism to students at Humber College. Do not miss what promises to be a lively and entertaining evening with Mel. Admission is free but registration is strongly recommended. Please contact the JCCC at 416-441-2345 or [email protected] to register. RAKU (POTTERY) WORKSHOP Raku, or rakuyaki, is a method of firing pottery based on a sixteenth century Japanese technique. The Japanese would fire tea bowls in a small wood-fired kiln and then remove the bowls from the kiln with tongs while still hot and rapidly cool them. The thermal shock would crackle the low temperature lead glaze. Raku ware was preferred for the tea ceremony because of its soft feel and unassuming, quiet aesthetic. Participants will learn the fundamentals of Raku under the supervision of skilled Raku craftsmen and will have the opportunity to create and glaze their own pieces. (Limited to 15 students). Harold Takayesu – Studied the craft for more than 30 years. He is teaching pottery at the Canadian Japanese Culture Centre in Hamilton and has given Raku workshops at numerous places in Ontario. He received the John Mather Award and a lifetime membership from the Ontario Crafts Council for service to the craft over an extended period. Yoga increases flexibility, improves strength, tones body muscles, enhances joint motilities that decrease the chance of injury, and helps you relax even in the midst of the most stressful environment. More and more people now practice yoga for physical and mental health, to feel better, more energetic, happy and peaceful. Yoga is an ancient science of physical, mental, spiritual development, which originated in India more than 7000 years ago. Yoga is the Sanskrit word for ‘union’: a holistic approach to unite and create health of mind, body and spirit as well as harmony in one’s life. Classes are for men and women and the program will provide instruction in 2 different styles, all taught by bilingual Japanese instructors. Our instructors are: Mariko Amano, Hiroshi Miyamoto and Peter Kosaka. All are certified Yoga teachers and are bilingual so they can provide direction in either English or Japanese. Two different styles will be taught: Hatha which is a classical approach to Yoga and most widely practiced in the west. Hatha yoga uses postures and conscious breathing in combination with mental focus to develop a body’s strength, flexibility and endurance, correct body alignment, and promote relaxation. The other is Ashtanga, a highly energized and dynamic form of Yoga, involves synchronizing the breath with progressive series of postures - producing internal heat and detoxifying the body. Ashtanga yoga improves circulation, maximize strength, concentration and flexibility, and calms the mind. In order to guarantee quality of instruction, class sizes are limited so please sign up soon for the programme which begins in May. Level I Basic – Beginner (Hatha) Wednesdays 5:10pm – 6:30pm: May 10 – July 26 /2006 $119/course + GST (12 classes) Level II Beginner – Intermediate (Ashtanga) Thursdays 5:10pm – 6:30pm: May 4 - July 20/2006 $119/course + GST (12 classes) Drop in class (JCCC members only) - $13/class + GST (max 5 people/class) Pre-registration is required. OBON ODORI by Toronto Buddhist Church It is said that every region in Japan has its own particular dances and kinds of music. Sometimes fans (the folding sensu, or the round uchiwa), tenugui (cotton towels), bacchi (sticks), or castanets (called Yotsutake – “four bamboos” - or Kachi kachi for the sound they make) are used. Hand gestures and movements show different aspects of life, such as digging for coal, fishing or harvesting rice, or even aspects of nature, such as blooming flowers or flowing rivers. Obon Odori or Minyo (folk dancing) might sometimes seem difficult, but they are easy, rhythmic dances with repetitive steps…sort of like Japanese line dancing! Each year, practices are held on Tuesday and Friday nights from 8:00pm -9:30pm in Social Hall of the Toronto Buddhist Church. This year’s practices will begin on Tuesday April 18, 2006 and will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:00pm to 9:30pm until Obon. Sunday practices will be held after morning services on the first and second Sundays only of each month. Please note that the last practice will be held on Thursday, July 6. It was designed for a large multinational automotive parts manufacturer with affiliates now in 37 countries. The AS has now grown into a full year abroad with nearly 1,000 participants since its inception. Programs have been based in Australia, the United States, England, and Canada. Each participant’s program is individually tailored; it is researched, planned and executed by each participant, in English, with the assistance of his or her counselor. Most participants have majored in fields such as electrical, mechanical or computer engineering, or developing fields such as IT systems and robotics. Having graduated from Japanese universities with bachelors or masters degrees, most of them have developed varying degrees of English/foreigner “phobia” and find themselves ill-prepared for life and work in an ever shrinking, more closely linked world where the ability to adapt, to use multiple languages, to network and solve problems creatively across cultures, is more important than ever. Participants build their own individually cutomized experience-based program around an interest, hobby or skill they either have or wish to develop, on some skill they can teach or pass on to others. The sky is the limit during the year, but success or failure of each program depends entirely on the individual’s determination, effort and ability to persuade. In effect, they are not just “learning English”, but “learning in English” – learning to learn from mistakes, learning to solve problems, to plan, to give and take, to adapt, to network, to create, to teach, to manage time and frustration, to laugh and cry in “classrooms without blackboards” all over the world. It is as much an “inner” adventure of self discovery as it is an “outer” adventure in activities ranging from rugby to skiing to cooking to flower arrangement to African drumming. Last year one participant even volunteered at the JCCC! FIA’s relationship with this city goes back to the 1970s when the first FIA teachers were hired from Toronto. Since then, more than a hundred Torontonians have enjoyed teaching corporate English based in Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. If you are interested in participating as a home stay family or would like to learn more about how home stay families can be involved, please contact Jennifer Burns at 416-761-9844 or 416333-4091. Haiku Corner 俳句コーナー Our haiku this month was composed by Chora and, given the season, it uses cherry blossom as its season reference. In the summer we hear mizu no oto - the sound of water as the frog jumps into the ancient pond. In spring it is hana no oto – the sound of the blossoms as they fall. 静かさや 散るにすれあふ 花の音 樗良 Stillness: The sound of petals, Sifting down together.
