1st Grade Math Enrichment:Lawson
Today we began with the warm up game â Greater Than or Less Thanâ which required
students to find mystery numbers between 1 and 30. As students guessed possible answers, they
were given clues as to whether the mystery number was greater or less than the number they
guessed.
We then began the activity â 3 Block Towersâ (see link). Students were each given a tower
of three cubes; one yellow, one blue, and one red. They were asked to find as many different
combinations as they could. They were also given a laminated worksheet (attached) to use to
record the different combinations they created. When students had created as many towers as
they could, we worked as a group to sort the different combinations using the worksheet. Some
students began to see a pattern for how to sort the different combinations. By looking at the
chart, it was easy to see we could make 6 total combinations. This activity gave students the
opportunity to use different problem solving strategies including using models, using a table,
and finding a pattern.
We ended class with the new thinker game â Connect Twoâ (attached).
1st Grade Math Pull Out
Today we warmed up with the game â Split Screenâ . Numbers were divided into two
groups and students had to figure out how the two groups were separated. Todayâ s puzzle
contained one group with the digit 2 in the numbers, and the other groupâ s numbers did not
have the digit 2.
We continued to work on our â Grab Bagâ worksheet. We reviewed drawing a picture,
using manipulatives, and using a table. Next week we will begin a new problem solving
strategy.
We finished playing the math solitaire game â Aces Upâ as a whole group. The game
allows students to practice using the phrases â greater thanâ and â less thanâ as well
as developing and discussing strategies.

1st Grade Math Pull Out
Today we warmed up with the game â Split Screenâ . Numbers were divided into two
groups and students had to figure out how the two groups were separated. Todayâ s puzzle
contained one group of even numbers and another group of odd numbers.
We began our new problem solving strategy of â Make a Tableâ . We completed word
problems that we used or made a table to solve (worksheet attached). Students were presented
with a challenge: they were sent home with difficult math problems to complete. If they show
their work and try each problem they will receive a prize next week (after discussion about the
problems and their strategies for solving them).
We finished today with the math game â Aces Upâ .

1st Grade Math Enrichment: Lundquist
We warmed up today with â Split Screenâ . Numbers were divided into two groups and
students had to figure out how the two groups were separated. Todayâ s puzzle contained one
group of even numbers and another group of odd numbers.
We then worked on the problem â Find the Differenceâ (see link). This activity required
students to practice finding the difference between two numbers and to think logically about the
placement of numbers. Students worked in pairs to create a pyramid of 6 circles. Each circle had
one number 1-6. The number at the top of the pyramid is the difference of the two below it. This
was the same for all the numbers in the pyramid.
We finished with the thinker game â Connect Twoâ (attached).
