What is a Sentence? • The word sentence comes from the Latin sentenia, meaning “way of thinking or opinion.” • The sentence is the structure with which we think about and communicate ideas and opinions. What is a Sentence? • Sentence: A group of words that contains a subject and its predicate, and makes a complete thought. who/what & what about them Noun Verb subject predicate Two Parts of the Sentence • • The sentence contains a two part structure for building thoughts. Part one is the subject (what or who we are talking about). Part two is the predicate (what we are saying about it). The person to whom we are talking needs to know both, and if either is absent then we fail to communicate. Subjects • Subject: (subj.) The noun or subject pronoun that the sentence is about. • The simple subject of the sentence is the noun or subject pronoun that the sentence is about. – Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran the race. Athlete is the simple subject. Subjects (continued) • The complete subject of a sentence includes the subject and all of its modifiers. – Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran the race. The talented athlete is the complete subject. Subjects (continued) • A compound subject is a double subject: more than one noun or pronoun are used as a double subject in the same clause. – Example: Science and history are my favorite subjects. Predicates • The predicate is a verb and other words that are about the subject. The predicate is the side of the sentence that says something about the subject. • The simple predicate is the verb. – Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran the race. Ran is the simple predicate. Predicates (cont.) • The complete predicate is everything that is said about the subject. – Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran the race. Swiftly ran the race is the complete predicate. • The subject of a sentence may take on a compound verb as its predicate. – Example: The athlete tripped and fell during the race. Tripped and fell are compound verbs. Practice: Identify the parts of speech and the sentence. Then underline the complete subject once and the complete predicate twice.
