What is being said about what?
What is a Sentence?
• The word sentence
comes from the Latin
sentenia, meaning “way
of thinking or opinion.”
• The sentence is the
structure with which we
think about and
communicate ideas and
opinions.

Two Parts of the Sentence
•
•
The sentence contains a two part
structure for building thoughts. Part
one is the subject (what or who we
are talking about). Part two is the
predicate (what we are saying about
it).
The person to whom we are talking
needs to know both, and if either is
absent then we fail to communicate.
Subjects
• Subject: (subj.) The noun or subject
pronoun that the sentence is about.
• The simple subject of the sentence is
the noun or subject pronoun that the
sentence is about.
– Example: The talented athlete swiftly
ran the race. Athlete is the simple
subject.
Subjects (continued)
• The complete subject of a sentence
includes the subject and all of its
modifiers.
– Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran
the race. The talented athlete is the
complete subject.
Subjects (continued)
• A compound subject is a double
subject: more than one noun or
pronoun are used as a double subject
in the same clause.
– Example: Science and history are my
favorite subjects.
Predicates
• The predicate is a verb and other
words that are about the subject.
The predicate is the side of the
sentence that says something about
the subject.
• The simple predicate is the verb.
– Example: The talented athlete swiftly
ran the race. Ran is the simple
predicate.
Predicates (cont.)
• The complete predicate is everything
that is said about the subject.
– Example: The talented athlete swiftly ran
the race. Swiftly ran the race is the
complete predicate.
• The subject of a sentence may take on
a compound verb as its predicate.
– Example: The athlete tripped and fell
during the race. Tripped and fell are
compound verbs.
