Tropical rain forests – what can we learn
in relation to forest dynamics in Europe?
Cyclic successions and mosaic structure …
- after Hallé, F. et al. (1978):
Tropical Trees and Forest. –
Springer
So….
Tropical rain forests – what we CAN learn:
– to study basic ecology of old natural forest; structure, structural
turn-over, species co-existence, carbon flow, niches…
– to widen our PERCEPTIONS of old-growth forest; not stagnant
dead places, but dynamic engines of life…
– to start seeing European forests as potential natural systems
where many species may co-exist, including woody species.
After centuries of studies of forestry ecology we are lacking much
in studies of forest ecology. We need places like Hainich….
