"We.have heard o f a case that occurred
not many years ago in this county. A wid­
ow woman held property which she might
transfer while she remained single, but
which, according to her husband's will, she
could not dispose of if she married again,
and in the course o f time she de-ired to
transfer the property left by her first hus­
band. Tliis, o f course, she could not do,
the provisions of her first husband’s will
'nhibiting her. H ere was a quandary. A
lawyer of this city was consulted. H e “ set
things tfp" for the jvife and her husband
She" went home, told her husband what
advice the lawyer had given.her, and he
thought it “just the very thing.," A nd
what, reader, do you suppose that advice
was ? Simply this: The husband and wife
were to quarrel and fight every day, and
this was. to be done in the presence o f the
children o f the wife, who were well-grown,
and they were made to believe the quarrel­
ing and fighting were genuine, instead o f
feigned. The programme was carried out
Co the letter, and then the husband applied
for a divorce. H e set forth “ incoSpatibitity" in his complaint, the wife admitted it,
and the children swore to it. Judge Bicbnell granted tlte divorce, • TLe same day
she transferred the property as she desired
to do, and the next day the divorced coup­
le were married. Such is one o f the phas­

step, a rough looking stranger came up
and thus addressed h er:

“Yes sir, he h a s a n s w e r e d Mrs, Pil­
kinson, “ though dear knows, there’s few

lies.”
“ W ell, madam, I have come to offer

“ A what ?” asked Mrs. Pilkinson, with
some excitement

Meeting the husband soon ’ after, the

o f the University;
* T i e peculiar and deep interest which all
our citizens feel in the University, whose
name we have placed at the head o f this
article, is-.derived from the fact that, while
it is the largest institution o f the kind on
the American continent, it fa also the one
which is the most democratic, and feels the
most immediately every pulsation of the
popular will. Its eight Regents are cho­
sen b y direct vote o f the people o f Michi­
gan. I t is as purely a representative or­
ganization as is the State Legislature.
T h e other great literary establishments of
the country, like Harvard, Y ale, and
Princeton, are close corporations. Their
boards o f management are continued by a
process o f official reproduction wiihin them­
selves. Their endowments which are the
sinews o f culture as- well as of war— are
a, cumulations chiefly of private benevo­
lence. In many very important senses
they are independent o f the p eop le; they
can defy legislatures, political cliques, and
even public opinion. W e do not mean
that they can defy public opinion perma­
nently, but they can do it for a much long­
er time than can an institution whose rul­
ers are the immediate offspring of the pop
iilar choice, and which still looks to popu­
lar favor for a nefeded portion .of its annual
income.
It is for this reason, mainly,, that the
mass o f the people are inclined to look up­
on the great University ot the interior as
peculiarly their own. A great g u lf is fix­
ed between them and the old close corpor­
ations o f learning. W hether justly or not,
they are apt to feel therpselves repelled by
these corporations, as forming an intellect­
ual aristocracy.
It is one o f the logical results o f this
state of facts, that the newspapers o f the
country— which are but the mouth-pieces
o f popular thought and emotion— should
be constantly referring to the great popu­
lar University, and should chronicle its do­
ings as a part, o f the history o f the time.
Since the opening o f the new year, two
events have occurred nt Ann Arbor, which
have attracted very general comment in
the public press; one o f these is the eman­
cipation ot the University from the caste
of sex, and the other is an elaborate report
on a Department o f H ygiene and Physical
Culture— this report having been submit­
ted to the Regents b y our contributor,
Professor Moses Coit Tyler. Both these
events are tokens o f progress.
W ith regard to the admission o f women
to all the University privileges—literary,
legal, medical, it must be gratifying to the
responsible friends o f the institution lo no­
tice how almost unanimous is the approba­
tion which that noble and brave decree
has evoked from the most enlightened or­
gans of opinion throughout the whole
country. Had it been otherwise, had this
act of simple fair-play been received by
universal howls instead o f universal huz­
zas, it would not have shaken our confi­
dence in its rightfulness and expediency.
A s it is the great University has crowned
itsellj not only with justice, but with praise.
Instead o f lowering its standing to the ob­

true Justice, o f true Civilization l Y o u
have set a benign anil fruitful example !

versity with the unconquerable might o f
Progress; while tho stars.in their courses
will ho fighting on you r sid e!
It is on account o f our intense sympathy
with this action at the University o f Michi­
gan that we are drawn to suggest to the
Regents one word of warning. T h e y will
have no difficulty in protecting their fe­
male students in the Collegiate depart­
ment; for the College students who have
already, entered, are gentlemen. T hey
will have no difficulty in protecting their
female students in the Law- department;
for the L aw students who have already
entered, are gentlemen. B ut they will
have difficulty in protecting their female
students iu the Medical department; for,
unless the male students who shall enter
the medical department next fall, differ es­
sentially from male medical students with
whom w e are too familiar here in N ew
Y o rk and in Philadelphia— the word gen­
tlemen can be applied to them only by
putting a strain upon the English language
which it can hardly hear.
L et us not be misunderstood. These
male individuals, who become studenls o f
medicine, probably have courteous instincts
and are civilized beings, iu all ‘ other rela­
tions o f life, except in those growing out
of their professional studies; hut ill the
prosecution o f those studies they pass into
a dense, penetrating poisoned atmosphere
o f professional traditions, so rank, so dead­
ly, as to destroy' in all except a, few supe­
rior natures, liberality' of feeling, common
sense, and gentlemanly sense also; T he
very persons who may have been gentle­
men before they entered this atmosphere,
and who may possibly become gentlemen
again when they get out o f it, will, while
herded together under the intoxication of
professional maxims at the medical school,
so strip themselves o f civility and common
decency as to compel us to name them
brutes— were wo not restrained from ap­
p ly in g that epithet to them by some re­
spect for our four-footed fellow creatures.
Consider the insolence, the obscene and in­
famous barbarity; with which refined and
noble-minded ladies have been treated in
medical schools o f N ew Y o rk and Phila­
delphia during the past winter, by medi­
cal students and constructively b y medical
professors! T o call these persons animals,
is such an unkindness to the latter as would
justify the expostulations of Mr. Bergh.
Therefore,* from our experience at the
East, w e warn our friends at the "West of
what they are to exp eot; unless by wise
and bold legislation- they meet the difficul­
ty in advance. The reputation ancl the
advantages o f the medical department of
Michigan University are such as will at­
tract many female students. I t would
not surprise us to hear that at least twenty
should.go there next fall.

•— From the Allegan Journal we learn
that a fire in that village on the 25th ult.,
destroyed on fourth o f the business por­
tion o f the village, loss estimated at $30,000. The Journal suffered t o the extent
o f $2,000, by type, presses, &c., burning.
Several persons were seriously injured,
and others slightly, The fire originated
from a defective chimney.

previous January for forty-six years.

Bills were introduced aud referred including
the follow ing: To provide for reclaiming
swamp lands in the Mississippi Valley ; to fa­
cilitate transportation on the Mississippi River,
and promote the commerce o f the Northwest;
to amend the act aiding the construction o f the
Iron Mountain Railroad ; for .the speedy remov­
al of political disabilities o f all 'fiitizens o f Miss­
issippi; to divide California into two judicial
districts. The following resolution was intro­
duced:
■Whereas, The Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choc­
taws, and Creek Indians have advanced in civ­
ilization and become rich in lands ; therefore,
Resolved, That they be no longer regarded as
the wards o f the government ; that their busi­
ness with the Uni tod States be adjusted; that
they be granted a sepavate territorial govern­
ment, with -full recognition as citizens of the
United States, the same as the people o f other
Territories.
A hill was introduced for the relief, o f ship
builders ; also to incorporate tbe Washington
and Ohio railroad ;. various resolutions of the
Iowa Legislature were presented; the follow­
ing w asadopted:
W h e r e a s , I t is o f grave importance to the
constitution o f this House that it should'he de­
termined whether a member present during the
session may "resign his scat without the consent,
o f the House; and thereby evade his duties and
responsibilities; therefore, be it
Resolved, That the Judiciary Committee be
Instructed to inquire and report what action or
rule should bo taken or established for tlia de­
termination o f that question.
The'House resumed the consideration o f the
Georgia bill which went over until to-morrow

ing into effect the provisions o f the treaty con­
cluded between the United States and the
Cherokee Indian, July 19, 1S66; tho Funding
bill was then taken u p ; the following Senate
bills were passed: Appointing managers for
the National Asylum for Disabled Volunteers;
authorizing the Secretary o f War to take charge
o f the Gettysburg and Antietam National cem­
eteries. Also, tho House hill to authorize tlio
Secretary o f W ar to place at the disposal o f the
Soldiers’ Monument Association, o f Eooklsland,
111., twelve pieces o f condemned ordnance.
The bill appropriating $3,000 for the relief
o f the heirs o f General Charles P. Smith, who
died while acting President o f a board to ex­

bill to change judicial circuits was called up;
a bill was reported to incorporate the National
Bolivian Navigation Company; the Punding

ing that information be given as to what States
have ratified the Fifteenth Amendment, and

B u r g l a r y .— On Eriday night the
grocery stove of Messrs. Redden &
Duncan was entered b y some thief or
thieves, and some forty or fifty dollars
worth o f gvoeeries stolen therefrom.
The burglars gained access to the
stove through the cellar, and by pry­
ing open, the cellar door Avith a chisel
or other similar tool. I t is hoped that
_jh.o guilty parties may ho caught and
brought to grief.

to their interests, and to secure their cov­
eted ends, they are willing to unloose their
purse strings and donate liberally. They,
o f late, conceived that it was necessary to
send a man to "Washington, to “ lobby” for
an appropriation for their harbor.
I notice Jo. Baker acts as reporter of
his own courts. H e has had any amount
o f business in the criminal line, lately.
H e has again made a raid on a Obikaming man, and sent him to the workhouse, at Detroit, for sixty days, aud then
asks, “ TYho’s to blame ?” L eaving me to
answer, I say Jo. Baker, is the man who
is to blame, in a great measure. H e, with
others of his respectable townsmen, will al­
low those miserable whtsJci/ Saloons to take
respectable rank with other business
houses, and from them, and them alone,,
does Jo. receive any official business. Jo.
sends the drunken man to tho -work-house,
and his destitute family to the Commis­
sioner o f the Poor, for support until his
wrath is appeased. I f T had the authori­
ty in m y hands, I would give every drunk­
en man* in the streets of Three Oaks an or­
der on their village treasurer for fifty dol­

to confine a man for getting drunk and
