Read the 2015 Annual Report - The Indianapolis Public Library

Today’s library is sandwiched in time between traditional and emerging service offerings. The Indianapolis Public Library’s
highlights and accomplishments in 2015 clearly demonstrate this phenomenon.
With the increased support from donors to The Indianapolis Public Library Foundation, the Library has quickly moved
forward into the digital world of eBooks, streaming video and an array of electronic resources demanded by
patrons. Free access to these online resources through the use of a Library card also requires that we assess

the community’s place on its digital journey and assist individuals in using new technologies to achieve their
learning goals.
This report tells the story of how Library usage is changing with the digital world. It includes an engaging
version of a digital journey map used in 2015 as a focus of community outreach meetings. It also illustrates
the continued emphasis on the Library’s mission in promoting early childhood literacy, offering computer
and job search training, providing essential community resources and serving as a civic-minded place.
Not to be overlooked is ensuring that we maintain a robust physical collection of materials that
includes books, which remain the preferred format.
Progress in fulfilling the goals of the Library’s new Strategic Plan was notable. It’s a plan
fully embraced by a staff that continues to adapt its skills to provide the best in patron
experiences. Specifically, in 2015 we took the first steps to renovate outdated facilities and
to provide Library cards to all Marion County students.
Whether the means are traditional or new, the Library and the Library Foundation are
proud to be a part of advancing your learning journey. We can’t wait to see where
2016 takes us!

Enriching the desire for personal growth and learning, engaging
new audiences to participate in the Library experience and
embracing the Library’s role as a cultural center were key
principles in serving our diverse community.
The culture of Ethiopia was on display as part of The Big Read, which
encouraged the shared reading of The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears
by Ethiopian-American author Dinaw Mengestu. The Big Read initiative was
highlighted by a special opening kickoff, book discussions, an Ethiopian
lunch and learn program, and a lecture by Mengestu as he reflected on his
homeland and writing perspective.

In 2015, IndyPL worked to maximize Library accessibility by
taking the initial steps to enhance and expand its physical
neighborhood presence and by connecting new users,
especially young ones, to its resources.
IndyPL and MSD Lawrence Township completed a first-ever initiative to
provide all 15,000 district school students with Library cards, thanks to a
special grant from The Indianapolis Foundation Library Fund. It represented
the first step toward the Library’s goal to provide a Library card to every
public school student in Marion County.
The Library joined local township school superintendents and the Mayor’s
Office to accept the ConnectED Challenge, a national initiative intended
to expand access to digital books and library resources to children. Local
leaders will collaborate in new and powerful ways to weave together visions
and combine resources.
The Library’s Shared System, which provides member schools access to
the Library’s catalog, added 2,457 new Library users. In 2015, Our Lady of
Lourdes and St. Barnabas Catholic schools were added. Students at the 27
member schools borrowed 196,502 items, a 12 percent increase from 2014.
“I enjoy coming to the Library and

Where Are You on the
Digital Journey?
This question was the focus of CEO Jackie Nytes’ “We Love Our Libraries” visits
to each IndyPL branch. The goal was to gauge the technological savvy of
the community in order for the Library to plan effective programming to help
individuals in their digital experiences.
