Richard Bernotas Middle School Spanish Mrs. Mara Rosenbloom General Information Spanish is a twelve-week long class in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. In 6th grade, it is part of the students‟ Encore rotation. In 7th and 8th grades, students can elect Spanish as an Encore class. Materials for Class something to write with (any color) a notebook (could be kept for all three years) a folder or other organizational tool for papers 6th Grade Curriculum Basic Greetings/goodbyes Days of the week, months of the year, date Classroom vocabulary and expressions Masculine and Feminine nouns Numbers 0-100 Geography/Cultural research project about a Spanish-speaking country 7th Grade Curriculum Review of 6th grade concepts and vocabulary Masculine and Feminine nouns plus “rules” for making words plural Adjective use - Describing self, friends, and family: o Physical descriptions, personality descriptions, jobs, nationality / where people are from, etc. Talking about school schedule, classes, and teachers Comparisons of schools in Spanish- speaking schools Family relationships and family vocabulary (mom, dad, cousins, grandparents, etc.) “At home” – talking about home, rooms in the house, etc. (if time remains) 8th Grade Curriculum Review of 7th grade concepts and vocabulary, as well as some from 6th grade Telling about likes and dislikes Verb conjugation in Spanish o Telling about what happens in school o Telling about what happens at home or over the weekend Unit on food Ordering in restaurants Creation of a restaurant menu Comprehensive skill practice from 6th, 7th, and 8th grade to create a “restaurant experience” in the classroom Class Work, Homework, Assessments, and Grading Class work will be practices, activities, and some projects that will build language skills On occasion, students may have to finish a class work assignment at home and it will be considered “class work”, not “homework,” for grading purposes. Homework will be given periodically, approximately 1-2 times per week. o Homework will be an extension of class or preparation for the next day‟s class. o Students are expected and encouraged to study vocabulary at home on a daily basis. Quizzes on vocabulary will be given on vocabulary and, of course, knowing the vocabulary well will help throughout the trimester. Assessments will be unit tests, quizzes, and certain projects that indicate a student‟s level of mastery of the unit skills. o Students will always get an advanced warning (I shoot for one calendar week) of any assessment that counts in the grade book.
