BA LTIMOR E CAMPUS Winter 2012 Visiting Employers Provide Students with Great Opportunities Stratford Students Brighten Holidays for Others During the month of October, Career Services welcomed three employers to campus: Maryland Live Casino hiring for The Prime Rib, Express Employment hiring for on call banquet positions, and Tudor Heights hiring for two part time cook positions. After three days of on campus interviewing 10 students were offered positions or asked to continue with the hiring process. Maryland Live Casino offered students insight of what it’s like to work for a 4-star restaurant and how to handle a fairly intensive screening and interview process. The Maryland Live Casino representatives had wonderful things to say about Stratford students and offered positions to three of them (steward, lead cook, and hostess). Continued on page 2. Stratford University was a proud sponsor of the March of Dimes Signature Chef Auction – Central Maryland, which strives to prevent premature birth. The event took place on November 5 at the Baltimore Marriott Waterfront Hotel. Chef Instructor Frederick Huber and several Stratford students served “Chicken and Sausage Gumbo” at the event. This month, Stratford students will be giving of their hearts and culinary talents to the community. On November 5, guided by Chef Eric Yeager, students prepared and served guests at a fundraiser for the March of Dimes. On November 20, Kennedy Krieger will pick up Thanksgiving dinner prepared by culinary students. Also that week, students will prepare a holiday meal for the U.S. Army at Ft. Meade. Before Christmas break, a project to distribute food for the hungry will also be completed. “It is great to see our students contributing to the community in this way each year,” commented Culinary Program Director Eric Yeager. ✰ MESSAGE FROM THE CAMPUS DIRECTOR Visiting Employers Provide Students with Great Opportunities continued from page 1. Laura Bristow Express Employment offers students both on call and full time opportunities around the Baltimore area including banquet serving, line cooks and banquet cooks. Six students have been offered positions with their company to work with their partners at local event venues. Express Employment extended offers to students to help train their banquet serving team as well. Lastly, Tudor Heights hired one student. Kitchen Director Glen Spurlock expressed how excited he is to have found students that he can see as being a great fit for Tudor Heights Assisted Living Home. Said Career Services Manager Dhvani Ganatra, “Career Services is working hard to keep up this momentum and continue bringing employers onto campus, providing Stratford students with the best possible chance to succeed after graduation!” ✰ Production & Contributors Writers Laura Bristow, Eric Frauwirth, Dhvani Ganatra, Riley Prendergast, Tia Berry Production and Design Keith Jones www.facebook.com/StratfordU S tratford students are really starting to “own” the Baltimore campus. In the past few weeks we saw a successful Baking Club bake sale, Spectrum Club Halloween party, over 250 Optimal Resume accounts, participation in competitions, and a slew of student volunteers signed up for events including the March of Dimes dinner, Pride of Baltimore event, and Maryland Science Center fundraiser. It’s been great to watch people get involved. Meanwhile on the administrative side we welcome Nick Grasso, Director of Admissions, Amanda Fogarty, newest member of the Student Accounts team, and new faculty members Eric Ambrose and Barry Wosco. In just a few weeks we will all turn our attention to holiday preparations – and of course a much needed break in December. On behalf of faculty and staff, I wish you all the best for a happy, healthy, and hurricane-free 2013. ✰ HOS120 Students Visit Four Seasons Hotel HOS120 students got a first-hand look at front office operations during their October field trip to the Four Seasons, one of the country’s premier luxury hotels. After observing the front desk in action, the students met with the assistant reservations manager and human resources director, learning about how the hotel ensures guest satisfaction while maintaining the company’s corporate vision. “Field trips definitely bring our courses to life,” commented Dean Frauwirth. “We will continue to plan as many as possible next year.” ✰ (Above, pictured from left to right): Stratford students Max Bolston, Sonusha Bhattarai, and Lena Horton. Baking and Pastry Club Bake Sale: Tia Berry Reports The Baking and Pastry Club bake sale held on October 16 was a huge success. Our club exceeded sales goals. Our biggest sellers were the carrot cake cupcakes and blondies. Employees, faculty, students, and even visitors to Stratford supported us by purchasing products or making donations. We look forward to using the proceeds from the bake sale for our next project. ✰ THE DEAN’S CORNER with Dean Eric Frauwirth This quarter I am happy to bring you a quick tip to keep your uniform clean and white. Cascade Dishwasher Detergent. Yes, liquid dishwashing detergent. If you have a stain on your jacket, use a small amount on the spot and rub in with a fingernail brush. When you run your washing machine, add some Cascade in addition to your regular detergent. Tia Berry and Briana Compton help raise funds for the Baking and Pastry Club with a Bake Sale. Do not use bleach on your chef jackets. Continual use of bleach will cause the fabric to deteriorate and the seams will start to unravel. Additionally, the bleach will change the color of the embroidery of your name and logo. ✰
