WHAT IS A FAD DIET?
The definition of a Fad Diets is subjective,
but usually consists of overemphasizing
one particular food or food type. Fad
Diets promise fast weight loss with easy
directions, but the structure of these diets
can be very obscure. Trendy diets tend to
either starve the dieter of essential nutrients
or have such outlandish food restrictions it
becomes virtually impossible for the dieter
to stick to the program. Alternatively, if a
dieter does in fact lose weight on the fad
diet, they often gain it back after going back
to their “normal” eating habits.
Açaí BERRY DIET
The Açaí berries are typically found in Central and
South America and grow on an Açaí palm. The
Açaí berry has gained popularity through dietary
supplementcompanieswhoadvertisetheAçaíberryas
an antioxidant and weight loss supplement. Although
the Açaí berry contains high levels of antioxidants,
research shows that they have no more than levels
found in mangos and strawberries. In addition, there
is no significant research that the Açaí berry is an
effective weight loss supplement.
WHAT ARE THE SIDE EFFECTS OF
LIQUID CLEANSING DIETS?
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING
Fad diets
Long term use of these juice diets can lead to
life-threatening electrolyte imbalances and
even lead to cardiac failure.
Although there is some research out there that
some forms of fasting can be beneficial it is
used in specific cases and under a professional’s
supervision.
Dietary supplement companies, as the ones who
distribute the pill form of the Açaí berry do not
have to abide by the same rules as pharmaceutical
companies. Generally, companies do not need
to register their products with FDA nor get FDA
approval before producing or selling dietary
supplements.
DETOX DIETS OR COLON CLEANSERS
Fasting has been around for a long time. Lent,
Ramadan, Yom Kippur are just a few religious
events that use fasting to cleanse the body or
spirit. The word detoxifying or cleansing sounds
appealing to most dieters. To rid your body of
harmful toxins seems reasonable but Americans
have taken fasting diets to more extreme levels.
Here are some popular juice diets and there
accompanying side effects.

TIPS FOR HEALTHY WEIGHT CONTROL
TYPES
Description
Energy Balance:
Individuals who consume more calories than they use will gain weight.
Individuals who know how many calories they require in accordance
to their physical activity levels will maintain weight. Please reach out to
your Wellness Coach for more nutritional information.
Good Nutrition:
Fasting and liquid diets are no substitute for a well balanced diet. The
American Heart Association states, “A healthy diet rich in fresh fruits
and vegetables, whole grains and fat-free or low-fat dairy products,
along with regular physical activity, can help most people manage and
maintain weight loss for both cardiovascular health and appearance.”
Physical activity can keep your mind and body healthy and strong. For
over all health, the American College of Sports Medicine recommends
the following:
Exercise:
Do moderately intense cardio 30 minutes a day, five days a week
Or
Do vigorously intense cardio 20 minutes a day, 3 days a week
And
Do 8 to 10 strength-training exercises, 8 to 12 repetitions of each
exercise twice a week.
Note: Moderate-intensity physical activity means working hard enough to raise your heart rate and
break a sweat, while still able to carry on a conversation. Please note that in order to lose weight or
maintain weight loss, 60 to 90 minutes of physical activity may be necessary.
• Make goals attainable and realistic
Goal Setting Tips:
• Write goals down
• Tell a friend or ask your Wellness Coach to help you
• Set rewards for attaining short term and long term milestones
