February 28, 2014 Dear Parents, As we gathered together on Wednesday evening for our Holocaust program, a compelling sense of pride in our students’ accomplishments permeated throughout the event. Our students proudly and enthusiastically presented their projects telling the story of the Holocaust through literature, historical facts, scientific and geographical data. It was evident to all in attendance how much our students learned about the Holocaust using technology and interactive classroom teaching. The dedication of our Holocaust wall was captivating and truly meaningful, as Dr. Len Shabason spoke about his late wife, Anna’s dedication and passion for teaching future generations about the Holocaust. This tiled mosaic wall was created by current and former Middle School students illustrating their thoughts and impressions about the Holocaust. This magnificent artwork is displayed in our Middle School hallway. If you have the opportunity, it is worth your while to stop and admire this student created masterpiece. We thank all of our Judaic and General Studies teachers and students in Grades 5 through 8 for all the nonstop effort they put forth in making their projects impeccable. This educational experience became a memorable evening that will resonate for a very long time in the hearts and minds of everyone in attendance. This book, in quite a humorous way, tells about the zany pets some of our presidents have had when they lived in the White House. President John Quincy Adams was given an alligator as a gift. The alligator was allowed to slither through the rooms of the White House, much to everyone’s dismay! Abraham Lincoln’s sons had a pair of goats, Nanny and Nanko, who were given the run of the White House. They were given a turkey as a gift; however, this turkey was spared from being eaten, as President Lincoln gave it a presidential pardon, as requested by his sons. Calvin Coolidge, a very reserved man who was president during the 1920’s, had a raccoon named Rebecca. Rebecca and President Coolidge became fast friends and the president could be often found walking Rebecca on a leash. As we fast forward to President George Herbert Bush’s presidency, he had a springer spaniel named Millie, who the president and his wife truly adored. When Millie was voted the “Ugliest Dog” in the Capital, she decided to set the record straight about her life in the White House. Millie “wrote” her “dogobiography” which detailed her busy life in the White House. The book became a “best seller” and earned $900,000 which was donated to the first lady, Mrs. Barbara Bush’s favorite charity- the Barbara Bush Foundation for Family Literacy. This is just a “taste” of some of the outrageous pets that lived in the White House with our most powerful and influential leaders. The illustrations add to the hilarity of this non-fiction book. 5th Grade Our 5th graders each did research on a famous person of historical significance that they were not familiar with. They were taught how to use non-fiction material to gather Do you shop online at Amazon? Well if you do, please register for their Amazon Smiles program at https://smile.amazon.com/. This may not seem like much, but if we are all shopping this way it really does add up. information from the Internet, encyclopedias, etc. Each student needed to organize their information in a creative way on a poster. Along with their display, they made a bottle buddy and decorated it to look like their famous person. Using the name of the person in their biography, the students also needed to write an acrostic poem about the traits, events, characteristics or other pertinent facts about the person's life. To wrap up this project, the students all dressed in character and presented their information orally to the class. Pre-K The Pre-K students are always moving and shaking. They are an enthusiastic bunch of boys and girls who like to actively participate while they are learning during “Circle Time.” Just last week, if you had entered our classroom, you would have observed all the students wearing hospital scrubs which included a special hair cap, paper shoes, plastic gloves, as well as, a blue hospital mask. These items were graciously given out by one of our special Pre-K mothers, Mrs. Barbara Rosenbloom. After distributing the hospital garb, she shared her personal experiences as an operating room nurse. The students sat and listened attentively as they were shown what instruments were used to examine patients. Soon after that, the boys and girls were given the opportunity to practice being a nurse with the instruments. As we focused on the letter Oo, the students were able to use their arms, or should I say tentacles, to reenact how this sea creature confronts its enemies. All I can say is, WATCH OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! because the students in Pre-K will squirt you with their octopus black ink. Each morning, the students enter the classroom ready to have fun with their friends, share personal stories, and learn and review all the information that is presented to them throughout the day.
