 Egg Tempera Masterclass with Robin-­‐Lee Hall RP Course Code SC1204049 Course Tutor Robin-­‐Lee Hall RP Course Dates 27 – 30 August 2013 Course Times 10am – 5pm Course Fee £320 Brief outline of course This 4 day workshop aims to give students an introduction to painting in the ancient medium of Egg Tempera. Students will learn about the historical context of painting in the medium as well as practical tuition in the traditional materials, methods and techniques of this wonderfully unique way of painting. Preparing a smooth ground to work on Content day by day: Day 1: History, grounds and materials History, materials, sanding down a ready-­‐made gesso panel, making real egg tempera paint and getting familiar with the medium including what you can and can’t do Day 2: Starting to paint and understanding colour Transferring a design to ready-­‐made gesso panel and drawing out design in egg tempera. Mixing colour through layering. Understanding the luminosity of the paint. Day 3: Building up layers in washes Laying on underwashes and shadows. The importance of modeling as well as colour. Day 4: Crosshatching techniques Learning to crosshatch over washes to create smooth transitions in tone. Building up details and depth and finishing. By the end of the course Students should have a small finished piece of work based on a section from an early Renaissance painting. If not finished, they should be able to take their pigments home and finish from what they learned on the course. Teaching Strategy – Students will learn through demonstration, practice and from looking at the work of egg tempera painters past and present. Student Preparation Requirements (students need to bring) Tea towel 3 x soft brushes (w/c brushes like sable or synthetic sable) round sizes 1 or 2 and 6 or 8 Dust mask (for sanding) Protective eyewear (for sanding) Palette (china or plate) 2 x jam jars Apron or old shirt Notebook A4 Tracing paper Kitchen roll Teaspoon Pencils: 2B, HB, eraser and ruler Sketchbook Soft pastel (in Burnt Sienna or any brown) There will be a cost of £6 for a Tempera kit for each student The kit will comprise: 1 x MDF panel (ready-­‐gessoed but unsanded) 2 x A6 sheets of pen & wash board (to practice on) Ice cube tray with 7 + compartments 7 pigments for Egg Tempera: Yellow Ochre, Venetian Red, Terre Verte, Vermillion Imitation, French Ultramarine Blue, Vine Black (or any black we have), Titanium White.
