Thalia Riggs Mickelson was born on April 22, 1924 in Hatch, Utah. She was right in the mid-‐ dle of her family with three older sisters and two younger brothers and a sister. Thalia has fond memories of growing up in Southern Utah; a ending a one room school, helping her dad on the farm, and pumping gas for the first cars. A er gradua ng from high school, Thalia a ended Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, and then the Branch Agricultural College (BAC) in Cedar un l the war broke out. Then she was needed to teach school. She taught in Duchesne and Parowan before returning to school at BYU to finish her degree. Thalia served an LDS mission in the Northern States from 1948 to 1950. At the end of her mission, she trained Sister Norma Mendonhall (now Norma Cochran, living in room #213) as the mission accountant. What a small world that they would once again meet at Summerfield! Thalia married Jay Mickelson on June 6, 1953. It was a double wedding with her li le brother. Thalia insisted on being married first because she was older and luckily her younger brother obliged. Soon a er their marriage, Jay was called up to the army and sta oned in Fort Ord, CA. Thalia lived there as long as she could, then returned home to teach school when Jay shipped out to Korea. Thalia and Jay are the parents of two daughters and a son. They lost twin daughters in infancy. They lived most of their married lives in Nephi, Utah and were the proud owners of Mickelson’s Restaurant, which is s ll owned by their son, J.C. Jay passed away in 1979 and in 1985 Thalia served a second mission to Rochester, New York. She has lived in St George, Utah for the past 15 years. In addi on to serving two missions, Thalia served in many other capaci es in the LDS church. She loved her calling as Stake Relief So-‐ ciety President where she served for 8 years. Thalia held callings in every auxiliary in the church included serving in the Man Temple, She has a beau ful voice and has been a mem-‐ ber of her ward choirs throughout her life. Thalia's favorite colors are blue and purple. She loves chocolate and reading and likes to watch BYU TV and Dancing with the Stars. Thanksgiving Origin Thanksgiving, or Thanksgiving Day, is an important public holiday, celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November in the United States. It originated as a harvest festival. Thanks- giving has been celebrated nationally on and off since 1789, after a proclamation by George Washington. It has been celebrated as a federal holiday every year since 1863, when, during the American Civil War, President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens," to be cele- brated on the last Thursday in November. Together with Christmas and the New Year, Thanksgiving is a part of the broader holiday season. The event that Americans commonly call the "First Thanksgiving" was celebrated by the Pilgrims after their first harvest in the New World in 1621.This feast lasted 3 days, and — as accounted by attendee Edward Winslow — it was attended by 90 Native Americans and 53 Pilgrims. The New England colonists were accustomed to regularly celebrating "thanksgivings"—days of prayers thanking God for blessings such as military victory or the end of a drought.
