Number 23 - March 2007 A RT H O U S E M O V E S The exhibitions continue apace at Penny’s Hill with recent showings by Tom O’Callaghan, Jae Rhodes and David Rose adding to the rich tapestry of works upon our walls from the master of hangings, Adelaide’s ubiquitous Russell Starke. Celebrity openers included Sandra Kanck MLC, The Democrats Parliamentary Leader who entertained as she opened the Jae Rhodes exhibition. upbringing, Ben knew at an early age he would be a chef and began as a 15 year old apprentice at Manhattan Bistro before cooking classic Italian at Pagliacio in Rundle Street. Darwin called, Sydney seduced and finally McLaren Vale stood up. “Penny’s Hill has given me new inspiration. To work again with such great people. Produce and wine, that’s what it’s all about,” summed up Chef Ben. His new menu is a beauty. Chef Ben Sommariva has found new inspiration at Penny’s Hill. Todd and Leanne Cristall with Roger their manager run a beautiful wine store in Bedford, far away Nova Scotia. Cross country to Vancouver’s famous Wine Festival meant working at the pouring table with Jennifer Delf and her outstanding crew, as literally thousands of BC trade and public sampled Penny’s Hill and Mr Riggs wines. We teamed up with Craig and Mignon Willson from Bremerton who wanted to know if Dale (who cut his teeth with them) was getting enough time on the golf course? Tee hee hee. CANADA CAPERS Sandra Kanck MLC, artist Jae Rhodes and Russell Starke announce Jae’s works for sale! Inspired by his Italian Plenty of action by Parky and Sophie saw meeting with new distributors in Toronto, three generations of the Hanna family. Grandfather Jack, son Ian and Ian’s son, Andrew played perfect hosts and are already on the job with The Black Chook and Penny’s Hill “Specialized” into the eateries and bottle shops of Ontario. MR RIGGS IN THE PINK Sophie and Jack Hanna with sommelier, Jamie Drummond (centre) at the elite Jamie Kennedy Restaurant, Toronto. Next stop in Nova Scotia with distributor, Todd Cristall and wife, Leanne, was brief but their very excellent Cristall & Luckett store is moving through Red Dot Shiraz Viognier at a rate. In 2006, our wine businesses were formally linked under the banner Galvanized Wine Group and if you’ve not previously noticed, we now present all Mr Riggs wines at cellars alongside Penny’s Hill. In addition, Woop Woop, The Black Chook and Timbuktu labels are also on offer. Just like having a shop! To support Breast Cancer Research, Mr Riggs workhorse Shiraz, “The Gaffer” which immortalises John Riggs, “The Gaffer” and famous farming forebear of winemaker, Ben, now has a pink packaging tinge as part proceeds of all “Gaffer” sales will be headed directly to this needy cause. We hope to raise at least $35,000 so we’d encourage your patronage. The Mr Riggs range has gained critical acclaim since launched in 2002 and now adds on a sticky viognier, which after racking, stacking and wrinkling was aptly named “Sticky End”. To learn more, visit cellars for a personalised finger-lickin’ taste test! with a menu that’s different – Skate and chorizo skewers or battered flathead with fries and apple pie dessert. Newlyweds, Caroline and Sam Martin begin life together. “Former Child Stars” join Dwight for S&V action in June. B L U E L I G H T AT R E D D O T Our hard working Kym Pilkington took Mr Riggs logo to Laos on recent holiday. SEA & VINES YOUNG BLOOD, OLD SOUL. Get the dates into the diary – “Sea & Vines” at Penny’s Hill on Sunday/Monday, June 10-11, 2007. New, hot Adelaide young band, “Former Child Stars” joins the evergreen Dwight Adams to beef up the beat. Late last year, Triple J Unearthed chose the group as its “Featured Artist” providing airplay for their demo single “The Next In Line” before the band had actually played a gig. They are now in big demand and to quote The Advertiser: “The band is blitzing the local music scene with their cool rock sound and boyish charm.” Dwight Adams, who you may not know, served on the aircraft carrier, “USS Independence” during the Vietnam years, and during this time was DJ for the US Armed Forces. He recently released an all new CD, “Soul Master” to add to his 2006 release, “Too Hot Ta Trot”. S&V 2007 also sees Chef Ben let loose formal morsels under marquee at “Ingleburne” – a searing 38 degree day which suitably galvanized the occasion. Congrats to Sam and Caroline. On the Friday night preceding S&V, Kym Pilkington, our irrepressible events junkie is staging a Blue Light Disco for young fry…ages 7-12. As a bonus, parents can drop kids off at cellars at 6.30pm, have a grown-up dinner in our restaurant and take the wee dancers home at 9.30pm. ROOKIE JAMES Cellars head fork lifter James Parkinson added a feather to his helmet by winning the 2006 SA Formula Vee “Rookie of the Year” title in his little green Elfin NG VW powered racer, the very last of the famous locally designed Elfins to be built by the late Garrie Cooper. Whilst Jamie loves anything with an engine, he doesn’t get a real lift out of the fork! C O O P F LY E R Our token resident Black Chook and fine feathered friend, introduced to the cellars chicken coop and named “Cooper” (he arrived in a Cooper’s Pale Ale carton) has mysteriously decamped, flown the coop, vanished, shot through, taken flight, bolted, scampered, and after a label dispute in the US last year which resulted in the chook imagery being deleted from our US-market labels, maybe “Cooper” saw no future in a no-chook label. Or perhaps he was abducted by the critters at neighbouring Fox Creek? Yet no remains remain. So remains the mystery of the missing Black Chook. MARITAL BLISS The march of wedding parties through our cellars continues. Notable recent wedding was that of Caroline Stockman and Sam Martin which saw a ceremony for 140 guests at Port Willunga before on-lawn drinks and Rookie racing champ, Jamie Parkinson and Elfin Formula Vee.
