Animal Health Camps were organized by TEC-IVRI, Pune in drought affected areas of
Osmanabad District during 17th and 18th March 2016
The Training and Education Centre, IVRI,
Pune has organized animal health camps cum
interaction with farmers in two villages of drought
affected Osmanabad district of Maharashtra on 17th
and 18th March 2016. The team comprising of Dr KN
Bhilegaonkar, Dr SK Das and Dr HP Aithal visited
Chara Chhawanis (Animal Shelters) in Kashimbagh
and Ainapurwadi villages of Paranda Tehsil, where
hundreds of cattle, buffaloes and calves affected by
drought were sheltered. Dr S Mukane, DAHO,
Osmanabad, Dr S Jahagirdar, ACAH, Paranda, and the
staff of Animal Husbandry Department coordinated
the visit and made arrangements for the health camps.
On 16th March 2016, discussed with the Livestock
Development officers of Sate AH Department of
Paranda Tehsil about the prevailing animal husbandry
practices, feed availibility especially during this
drought period, the heath care practices and prevalent
disease conditions in animals.
On 17th March, an animal health camp was
organized at Kashimbagh Chara Chhawani where
about 1400 cattle and buffaloes were sheltered. A total
of 208 animals (cattle and buffaloes) of 138 farmers
were treated. The common cases recorded were foot
and mouth disease, ecto- and endo- parasitic
infestation, anorexia, anoestrus, repeat breeding,
diarrhoea in calves, besides, minor surgeries were
performed for a tumour in eye of a cattle and fibrous
growth on the ears of a buffalo.
On 18th Matrch, another health camp was
organized at Ainapurwadi village of Osmanabad
district. The manager of Ainapurwadi Chara Chhawni
informed that about 1100 animals have been sheltered
in the chhawni, and are provided regularly sorghum
straw, sugarcane top and concentrate to each animal.
About 300 cattle and buffalo cases of 120 farmers
were treated. The common ailments were mastitis,
ecto- and endo- parasitism, arthritis, anoestrus and
repeat breeding. In addition cases of retention of
placenta, nasal bleeding, traumatic injury were also
treated. The animals were also brought for pregnancy
diagnosis and artificial insemination. The castration
was also done in five bulls.

After the camp, we visited a Gir dairy farm
having about 80 animals being maintained in semiopen housing system.
Both the camps received over-whelming
response from the farmers and the news was also
published in local and regional news papers.
