Resources Study Guide – Chapter 7
1) What is a natural resource?
Things found in nature that living things use
2) Describe how a squirrel uses natural resources.
A squirrel uses a tree to live in, nuts to eat, a stream to bathe in and drink from.
3) What is the difference between renewable and nonrenewable resources?
A renewable resource can be replenished within 100 years, while a non-renewable resource
cannot.
Wind/Sun/Water
8%
Nuclear
7%
Resources
Oil
40%
Natural
Gas
23%
Coal
22%
4) Using the pie chart above, where do we get most of our energy from now? In 100 years, what do
you think this pie chart will look like?
Now—Oil (Fossil Fuels)
In 100 years—more wind/sun/water/nuclear while less oil, coal, natural gas (fossil fuels)
5) List examples of nonrenewable and renewable resources in the table below.
Natural Resources
Renewable Resources
Sun
Wind
Water
Trees (biomass)
Nonrenewable Resources
Oil
Coal
Natural gas
Minerals
Land

6) What is a pollutant?
A pollutant is any material that can harm living things by interfering with life processes.
7) Describe some ways that humans affect land, water, and air.
Land— cutting down trees, landfills, construction of building and roads, polluting, littering
Water—polluting, wasting, using it too quickly, improper disposal of chemicals
Air—cars, factories/power plants, airplanes, trains, boats, livestock, smoking
8) Give three examples of materials that are considered solid waste.
a. Milk jug
b. Banana peel
c. Water bottle
9) What do the 3Rs represent?
The 3R’s are three ways to reduce the amount of solid waste—reduce, reuse, recycle.
10) Pick two objects that could be considered solid waste and describe in the table below how you
could reduce, reuse, and recycle the objects.
Waste
Reduce
Reuse
Recycle
Water bottle
Use a glass and get
Fill it again from the
Put it in the recycling
water from the faucet faucet
bin
11) What happens to solid waste if we do not reduce the amount we create, reuse it, or recycle the
waste?
It goes to the landfill where it will sit.
12) When a landfill can’t hold anymore solid waste, it is closed down. How can a landfill be an
environmental problem even though people are no longer depositing trash there?
If people throw away harsh chemicals, they could leak through the plastic/clay liner and into our
soil. This could eventually lead into our water supply.
13) Give an example when an animal or plant would possibly be in danger of losing its natural
habitat?
When new roads or houses are built; construction; deforestation (cutting down trees) to make
furniture and other wood products; when their water ways or land is polluted by people
14) Describe the different ways people use land (must list at least five land uses).
Hiking
Building homes
Farming
Clothing
Jobs
15) Some people take their own bags with them when shopping. How might this affect natural
resources?
It will reduce the amount of natural resources used to make either plastic or paper shopping
bags to carry your purchases.
