Dominican Republic Imports: FOB, by origin Exports: FOB, by last known destination Trade System: General Overview: Over the last five years, the development of the exports of Dominican Republic is marked by a peak of 6.8 bln US$ in 2006 followed by a continuous drop to 4.7 bln US$ in 2010 (see table 1 and graph 1). This represented an average annual decrease of 8.9 percent since 2006 (see table 1). Imports showed a continuous growth marked by a peak of 16.4 bln US$ in 2008 before dropping in 2009 (by 26.3 percent) and then bouncing back in 2010 by 25.8 percent to amount to 15.2 bln US$ (see table 2 and graph 1). The trade balance recorded a deficit of 10.5 bln US$ in 2010 compared to 7.4 bln US$ in 2009 (see graph 1). Trade with Latin America & the Caribbean, Developed North America and Eastern Asia recorded deficits respectively of 3.8, 3.3 and 1.6 bln US$ in 2010 (see graph 2). Imports were more diversified across partners than exports in 2010: 12 major partners accounted for 80 percent of imports (compared to 5 major partners for exports) (see graph 3). They represented respectively 37.3 and 25.8 percent of total exports. USA was the top destination for Dominican Republic’s exports with 58.7 percent of total exports. Other major markets for exports included Haiti and China (see table 4). Over the last three years, top export commodities were instruments and appliances used in medical, surgical, dental or veterinary (HS code 9018), cigars, cheroots, cigarillos and cigarettes (HS code 2402) and articles of jewellery and parts thereof, of precious metal (HS code 7113) (see table 3). Other major commodity groups included machinery and transport equipment (SITC section 7) and manufactured goods classified chiefly by material (SITC section 6) respectively with 23.4 percent and 17.3 percent of imports. Over the last three years, top products for imports were petroleum oils, other than crude (HS code 2710), petroleum oils and oils obtained from bituminous minerals, crude (HS code 2709) and petroleum gases and other gaseous hydrocarbons (HS code 2711) (see table 5).
